Are there 39mp & 50mp+ Test Bodies in the Wild? [CR1]

More than 46.1 out there?

Northlight has received a couple of reports about larger megapixel EOS cameras out in the wild. The first one from the USA and sporting a 39mp sensor, and a second report from Asia about a camera well over 50mp. Both test cameras are in EOS-1 style bodies.

It’s stressed that neither camera is a production model and are strictly for testing.

I have no doubt the big megapixel DSLRs are in the pipeline, but so far things are pointing to the professional market instead of the consumer market.

PhotoPlus Announcements?

PhotoPlus 2012

Lots of talk about Canon making some announcements this week for PhotoPlus in New York City. However, there is no evidence that media invites have been sent out around the globe.

Could there be an “in development” announcement that doesn’t require media invites?

It’s possible, although Canon has always tied those in with other product launches.

I’ve also heard through the grapevine that Canon USA wasn’t all too happy with the purported Photoshop’d EOS-3 with a 46.1mp sensor articles that popped up not too long ago. That in itself is quite interesting, as why would they care about something that isn’t real?

It has also been suggested Canon still has 3-4 lenses still to announce in 2012. As usual though, there is no know timeline.

A New EF 800 f/5.6L IS II? [CR2]

In development?

I received a suggestion that Canon is currently developing a new EF 800 f/5.6L IS to take advantage of the new weight saving technologies in the newest supertelephoto lenses.

No mention of timeline, or if the EF 200 f/2L IS is also on the replacement cycle. If you remember, the 200 launched with the 800 back in January 2008.

Advise Exposure correction versus evaluative metering

Just recently I purchased the 5D MK III
I noticed that while using AV(did not check M or TV) in combination with Evaluative metering my photos (using 24-105 and 70-200 MK II) are about 1 stop underexposed. I do not have this with my 7D. I thought both use the same meteringsystem. Did the metering change in the 5D MK III? Or do I need return the camera for a check?
I can correct of course the exposure. Even in post-processing. I can use also a different metering but I am just surprised of different behaviour compared to my 7D. It now means that all the time using AV icw EM I have to use + 1 stop EC

Can someone help me with some advise and explanation? Thanks!

ps sorry if this subject was already addressed. Couldn't find it

5D mkIII image "Dust" after impact

Hi everyone

Last friday I was doing a night photo session and by accident someone push my tripod with mi 5d mkIII on it :'(, the height of the tripod was about 3-4 feets and the camera landed on concrete... that little mini heart attack... so I check it out...

On/Off... ok
Focus... ok
Shutter... ok

Everything was working ok, so I just take a deep breath, coursed myself and continue shooting, next day I went to the beach and carry the camera with me...

I Just downloaded the pics and noticed on a photo some "dust"... continue checking and all the pics have that same dark spots in the same places... tracking the pictures, these dots appreared just after the impact...

I already did the "clean sensor" several times and the spots are in the same place, shoot with another lenses... the same, even shoot with mirror lock, the dots are there...

Can anyone help me??

Did this happened to someone??

Canon 5Dmkiii weird miss firing with sync cable and strobes

Hoping someone can help me out. Recently got a bunch of new equipment and finally some time to set it up and test it out. However, ran into some problems I couldn't figure out.

Canon 5D mk iii
Canon 7D
Interfit stellar XD strobes
Canon 430 EX
Cactus V5 wireless triggers

So I set up a my gear to shoot some wine bottles for this photigy course I am doing. I set my 5D to full manual, silent shoot off, shutter at 1/160th and tethered it to my MBA and was using live view and eos utility. Hooked one strobe up to my camera with sync cable. Shooting, everything was good. I was messing around with various positioning etc to get the reflections I wanted and back to shooting. Then for no apparent reason, the strobes stopped firing consistently. maybe 1 in 4 shots would fire but random. I checked cable, even switched to a different strobe. no difference, inconsistent and very poor results. I turned off liveview, disconnected from my MBA and same results. Hooked the sync cable up to my 7D and worked 100%. With either camera and my 430 EX I could trigger them optically every time, not one misfire.

Today, went back to shoot some more and was doing fine, 100% after about 50 shots, then it started misfiring again. Around the same time, I thought my 5D shutter sounded like it was in slow motion too but maybe that was just me being pissed off. Again my 7D shot 100% when I tested it... don't get it. The 5D may of heated a bit but liveview doesnt display on the LCD when teathered so it isnt working as hard. Could that have something to do with it?

Anyway, shut everything down, went out and bought some Cactus V5 wireless transceivers. Didnt want to spend a lot and these had very good reviews.

Came back hooked them up to my 5D and stobes. checked channels and right settings. no go, wouldnt fire strobe on shots. Pressed the test button on transceiver on 5D and fired the strobe. When I click shutter, green light on both transceivers light up but dont fire. I hooked it up both to sync cable and hotshoe with no results. I tried with my 7D and no results. I hooked the cactus V5 to my 430EX and that worked 100% and optically fired the strobes every time.

Not sure what is going on. Had such good karma all week but I did decline to jump start a lady's car just before heading home to shoot, was too excited to get all this going... damn u Karma.

Bring 120-300 OS or buy 55-250mm ?

So my problem is that if i bring my 120-300 with me to my europe trip, it adds a lot of weight in my luggage.
Sure I can manage to save the weight somwhere else but,
If I buy the 55-250 and bring this one instead, I would lose 45mm(less than that since the 300mm is more like 275) but I would lose image quality and a lot of light..but it's inexpensive and light. And I don't want to spend more than 200$ so..

Also I was questioning myself if it's not a little risky to bring a lens that big and expensive to a 1-2 month trip.. So if some of you have travelled with expensive gear can give me advices, I would be thankful.
Your toughts would be appreciated!

60D or t4i for video?

I know this has been has been asked 100 times, but I'd like to be a bit more specific.
Will the 60d or t4i be better for video? When I say "better" I mean higher quality.

- I do not care about stills at all, only video.

From what I know these cameras are very similar, but does the newer processor mean better video? What about the other specs?

Also, does the touch screen make shooting easier, or will the 60d's interface be more ideal for shooting?

I'm quite the noob when it comes to this, so all help will be appreciated :)

EDIT: I also want to keep in mind the quality in "low light" environments.

Sigma lens repair

I have a Sigma 100-300 f/4 that I love - very sharp and the ideal range and aperture. (As we all know Canon does not offer a lens like this). However, a couple months ago the autofocus stopped working. I contacted CRIS Camera, which is one of Sigma's authorized service centers (and is in my state) and they said because the lens is no longer made they cannot repair it. They were not even willing to look at it. I think (my memory is faulty here) I emailed Sigma afterwards and they did not reply. Just wondering if anyone knows of a reliable camera repair that would likely be able to fix it?

28mm 1.8 or 40mm 2.8 on 60D?

Hi all,
Currently have a 24-105mm and 50mm 1.4, both are brilliant lenses on the 60D.
Gonna go on a trip soon and need to bring just one standard lens.
Read a lot of reviews on both the lens, suggesting that the 40mm 2.8 is superior optically.
But the thing is, I'm on a crop dslr, will the softness of the 28mm really affect me as much?
And the focal length, will 40mm be too long? (64mm eqv.)
I may have to take group shots of people during the trip.

Many thanks.

Storing HDR Settings in Custom Shooting Mode (C1,C2,C3) for 5D MkIII

For my 5D MkIII, I've tried to create camera settings for HDR mode and store them in the Custom Shooting Mode (C1, C2, C3). It appears that Custom Shooting Mode is greyed out (cannot be selected). Could not find anything in user's guide that addresses this.

By contrast, settings for the very similar AEB shooting mode can be stored in C1, C2, or C3.

Has anyone tried storing HDR settings in 5D MkIII? Were you successful? How?

If this option is not allowed, why might that be? Could firmware be changed to allow this?

Thanks

70-200 f2.8L USM or 70-200 f2.8L IS USM II

Hello everybody - this will be my first ask for help in this forum - I have seen a post similar to this but it was about a body vs. lens upgrade on the same two lenses and at page 15 I gave up looking.

Right after Christmas I will visit the country of my birth and I am determined to take the best portraits of my mother, siblings, etc. as I can (not in a studio, just outdoors). I have the knowledge and skill to do that but not the proper gear. I am limited to my 24-105 f4L ( I can't really melt the background the way I want it) and the 50 1.8 II (the pentagonal bokeh balls drive me nuts). I returned the 85mm 1.8 in my signature below to help pay for my car insurance deductible (life happens).

I would really love to have the 70-200 f2.8L IS USM II - it is my dream lens for portraiture and for many other uses. I'm sure it will be the most versatile lens I can own for a very long time. However I'm sure everyone knows here about the price that's kind of hard to swallow. The 70-200 f2.8L USM is almost 20 years old by 2015 - my question is: would it still be advisable to acquire that lens now and how does it perform optically vs. the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II?

I am thinking right now with "just" $1000 more, down the line I would probably have wished that I just went for the 70-200 IS II if I got the non-IS and that could have "saved" me money from selling off the non-IS at a loss.

And one more question, to those who had a 135 f2L before and bought the 70-200 (IS or non-IS) later, did you still find the 135 f2L had any more use?

Thanks very much and I'm looking forward to some of your opinion.

Lens Kit Set : One (EF-S18-135) or Two (EF-S18-55mm & EF-S 55-250mm)

Hey people 8)

I'm planning to get the Canon Eos Kiss X6i as my first DSLR!!!(I live in Japan, but it's known as the EOS 650D/Rebel T4i in other regions of the world.)

So the dilemma : I'm torn between the 18-135 set or the 18-55 & 55-250 set... Links are as below :

I'm a total newb in DSLRs, and I was just wondering which set should I be getting??? I will be keeping this hobby up as long as I could... and I plan to move further in this field. I won't be taking much landscape shots though, I love taking portraits. Would truly truly truly appreciate it if someone would advise upon this! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!! :-*

Lens suggestions for 3 weeks trip to Egypt and Jordan

Hi All,

I have been following canonrumors for few years now but first time registered today and my first post.

We are planning a 3 weeks trip to Egypt + Jordan (other than usual highlights like pyramids, luxor, petra etc... I am hoping for few days in desert too. both in egypt and in jordan).

I was rebel user (550D + 15-85 + some other lenses listed below), and recently upgraded myself to 5D II and currently own below lenses (550D and EFS lenses are sold)

24-105 (I bought it with 5DII as kit)
24 1.4 II
40 2.8 STM
50 1.4
85 1.8
70-300 L
+ I am hoping to add one ultra wide angle but haven't decided which one

430 EX II + Yonguno trigger (I will carry this)

I am thoroughly confused about which lenses to carry... when I look at my china travel trip with 550D, most of pics were around 15mm.. so logically I may be using 24 mm more but not sure if it will enough for egypt/jordan too (on wide side + I never had anything wider than 15 mm on rebel).

I am currently confusing myself with below thoughts

1) sell my 24 1.4 II + 24-105 to fund 24-70 II.... carry it with 50 1.4
2) get 17-40 + 24 1.4 II and 85 1.8
3) 17-40, 24 1.4 II, 24-105

I am travelling with one small kid too... so dont want to carry more than 2-3 lenses + I assume egypt and jordan will be on bit dusty side.

I think I will gift one decent point and shoot (S110 or similar) to my wife before our trip anyways... so not sure if 24-105 will make sense or not.
Actually, so far I am not that impressed with 24-105... its good but not as good as my 15-85 which I sold (not 100% sure if it is consumer level camera settings which set default saturation etc more aggressive than model's like 5D II...I increased saturation level of my 5D II today, will spend few days and see how it works).

I know no-one can decide for me but your thoughts, comments and opinions will surely help me making up my mind.

Thanks,
Sid

PS: 70-300 L is a beautiful lens but with current state of affiar in egypt.. i will rather not carry any attention grabbing lens.

Any Pro Music and Band Photographers?

Hi, I'm after some insights from Pro Band photographers on how are you making money?
Not because I want to follow in your footsteps, been there, had my fun. [I always got too drunk at gigs and it became hazardous to my gear]
I ask because I have recently become aware of artists such as Coldplay, LadyGaga and the Stone Roses, are asking for full ownership of merchandising and editorial rights. As I understand, you are allowed to sell your photos to one publication just once. AND you can't even use them in your portfolio.
Now I can understand the merchandising rights because they obviously don't want their band/faces printed on condoms or something inappropriate, but can you get a percentage for the photos they actually use for marketing?
As to the editorial rights, thats just plain greed.
It seems like they are getting photographers to turn up for free, work for free and then take all ownership of the work and use it to make money. Please tell me if I am missing anything, do you get a one off fee for turning up?
From an industry that is advocating artists copyrights and cracking down on pirated music, I find it highly hypocritical and upsetting that they would start trampling other artists rights just to earn more money.
Hopefully it's just a few artists with these demands.
