Canon 70-200 f2.8 II or Sigma's 70-200mm f2.8?

I got my 5DM3 (freakin' LOVING it!) and now I'm looking into some more great glass. I just figured that I'd save up for the Canon version of this lens (70-200 f2.8 IS II USM) but found the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO EX HSM OS and wanted to know if anyone owns this lens and what they think of it? Any regrets?

I see LOTS of reviews (all very positive) for this camera, but one that said the non-weather sealing (which the Canon lens has) might make a big difference.

Is the $1,300 in savings worth it? I figured that I might just put that extra chedda into another Prime. What are your thoughts?

Canon 5D Mark iii and 64Gigabyte SD card

Has anyone tested any SDXC 64 gigabyte cards on the Canon 5D Mark iii? I called Canon they have only tested up to 32 gigabyte SD cards. My concern is being able to have the 5D Mark iii properly format and utilize beyond 32 gig on the 64 gig card with the FAT32 file system.

Looking only for replies from anyone that can confirm full use (or beyond 32gig) of the of the allotted 64 gig of space. I'm not concerned about speed on this thread or why one should use a CF card vs. an SD or the Windows FAT32 file system structure

Many thanks for your assistance

Advice

Hi guys, first time poster here, but i wanted some advice.

a few years ago a bought a 30D kit from B&H that came with a 17-85 HSM lens. Wasn't the best lens, but serviceable. Also bought a 70/200F4.L at the time, because i liked taking airplane pictures. A few years later i sold the 70-200 and got a 100-400L, needing the better reach for my airplane hobby.

Last year i bought a new 7D, and i have loved it so far, especially with my 100-400, but the 17-85 is probably seeing the end of its useful life, and i'd like to find something else.

I was thinking it would be time to get some L glass for my everyday use lens, but i don't really have a spare $1500 sitting around. What i do have is this 100-400 lens that is still worth quite a bit (at least until the new one comes out)

considering selling that, buying an 24-70 F2.8L (version 1) or a 24-105 F4, or maybe the new tamron 24-70. and perhaps a lesser quality long reach lens for airplanes. I'm always shooting in good light, but focus speed and accuracy is a big deal.

Was wondering if anyone has had any success with sigma/tamron/canon non-L lenses up about the 300mm mark? Would i regret not having the L for my occasional plane spotting?

Canon 5D Mark iii with 24-105 --> $4169 USD

All - I spoke with August at J&R Music in NYC (I've been buying from them since the mid 70s - trusted source). Though not on their site, August gave me the OK to put this listing here. if you call him directly he will sell you the 5D Markiii with the kit lens for $4169 vs. $4299. Their number is : 800-806-1115 his extension is 1041. They are (like most resellers) presently out of stock on this item but they expect shipment soon. Their web site is jr.com. You must ask for August as no other sales rep will offer this price.

“L” Primes Coming?

Received two bits of information about possible upcoming lenses from Canon. Apparently both the 35 f/1.4L and 85 f/1.2L II are slated to be updated. As with all things in regards to lenses from Canon, no one is quite sure when either could be announced. It was suggested the 35 f/1.4L II has been delayed on numerous occasions for redesign and tweaking.

This is the first I have heard seriously about an 85L replacement, but anything that speeds up the AF of the lens would be very welcomed.

I believe we’ll have to see the new 500, 600 and 24-70′s shipping before we get another major “L” lens updated.

$10,000 what should i buy?

Hey,

I'm new here at canonrumors but like everyone else i've been reading from the sidelines.

I'm selling my gmc sierra 2006 2500 truck, my dad is giving it to me as a gift for my graduation but i don't need it and he needs some cash so we are fixing it up and splitting the profits of 20,000.

I'm currently shooting film with a canon canonet ql17 giii, i got it since i couldn't afford buying lenses for a cheap camera body.

So my question is if you had 10 grand to spend on photography gear what would it be? Include a camera body.
And no i won't be buying what you exactly want of course but was just curious on what you would purchase.

I'm looking into the canon 5d mark iii myself right now. Not sure though maybe a 1DX or a 7D

Light leak from status LED in long exposures 5Dm3

This weekend I was taking some long exposures of the sky and saw that there was a red streak near the bottom of the frame, it is the same color as the red status LED that stays illuminated durring the exposure. Is this normal? Can I turn off the status LED? Here is a link to the image:

I was using a Canon 5D Mark III with the 24-105 zoom.

I've switched to the Dark Side (no, Literally).

By the Dark side, I mean the dark room (see what I did there *badumtssss*)

I've recently purchased a Canon AE-1 film camera from eBay for $25.00. It was in great condition, I mean it looked like it was brand new. The only thing that was missing was a camera battery door. I replaced it just as soon as I go it.

I've got to say, I've never shot film before. But, WOW it's a fun hobby. For some reason having film makes me think about my shots more. And the fact that the camera came with a Canon FL 24mm f/3.5, It made me use my feet a lot to get my subject right where I wanted it to be.

And developing the film is a fun job. I don't understand why people moan and grippe about having to spend 20min just to develop one roll of film. I thought it was extremely fun and interesting at the same time.

Now, I understand that a lot of you here shoot digital. And that Film is basically dead. But, I was wondering if there was anyone out there who could suggest any good lenses for a film body. FD or FL. Also, I'd like to hear some suggestions on film. I've heard that the Kodak T-Max 400 (the one i've been using) is a really good film.

What size 5d3 RAW files

I shoot weddings generally and I wanted to buy the right sized card for a 5d3 which will turn up next month hopefully. I'm going to be using RAW files on the CF and JPEG on the SD as a backup.

I've only got a few 5d3 RAW files so I was wondering what I can realistically expect as an average? I shoot all ISO ranges - 100-6400. Would 30mb be a good average? Or 35mb?

Thanks in advance :)

Canon 1.4/24L or Carl Zeiss Distagon 1.4/35

Hello Folks,
I was thinking about to get one of these Lenses for my 5dMKIII. I want to use them mainly for "milky way" and "aurora borealis" shots and Landscape photography. This means the lenses can get very cold. Sometimes it can get down to minus 20C and more. I wont use them during snowfall of course. Does anyone have experience with these lenses in "extreme" conditions? Has anyone an advice which one would fit more my needs? Beside the mentioned filed of interests i do also a lot of nightshots (timelapse). That's why im going also for the f1.4.

Canon or Nikon...

So, this isn't a Canon vs. Nikon thread. It's about cameras doing a job for you and understanding what that job really is.

I'm primarily a wedding photographer ( http://www.phildweddingphotography.co.uk ) and have been looking at what my next camera will be. I did originally look at a 1dx but the 5d3 was starting to look more interesting to me given the silent shutter and ISO performance. So I rented one for the weekend.

Playing around inside with ISO performance and focus tests I satisfied myself that I was happy with ISO6400 and 12800 at a push. The shutter sound on silent is amazing and UK churches are getting more and more funny about photographers. That's a real win for me.

So then I took it outdoors and found that, in the viewfinder, you can't see the red flash on an AF point when it's focussed! That's a serious issue for me. If I'm outdoors and shooting some group photographs, I need to know the camera has focussed and I don't like to use beep all of the time. This has been reported by people on various forums.

At that point, for me, Canon have made a serious error. It's then I started to look seriously at Nikon for the first time in years. I was looking at the options: d800 has 50mb files :( d3s is only 12mp :( d4 is very expensive if I'm going to have to rebuy lots of stuff and will have a loud shutter :( d700 is a bit old now :(

While I was doing this I realised that there's a mode where the AF point can disappear when it's achieved focus. <phew> It's not a perfect solution, but it'll do. (although I am going to get in touch with Canon to point this issue out).

The reason for posting this? All of the DR tests and so on that get done are, to me, much less relevant than the overall look of a photo I receive and the 50mm 1.2 and warm, attractive tones and white balance that I receive. When I was thinking of moving to Nikon it was those which made me not want to move. I wasn't thinking "Yay - I can get cleaner shadows" or whatever.

With all of the discussion about sensors and so on it's important to remember that it's only important if you'll be using it. However, if I moved to Nikon I would lose some of the things that do really matter to me and I still think the 5d3 is the best overall wedding photography camera on the market.

So, when people are saying "is the Canon better at anything" my answer is a clear "Yes!" and they are features which make a difference to me.

While I was playing around, I also took a few photos with the camera - no weddings, but just some nice flowers around the block:

When does Canon restock Refurb Direct Store?

It's in the title, but I'm just wondering if any of you wonderful people know what kind of schedule Canon is on when they update their refurbished section of the Direct Store? And, is it possible to set up your account so that you are emailed/notified if a certain item comes in? I have a "Wish List" set up but I couldn't find any way to have it contact me...

5d3 questions and help thread

Ok so I keep getting questions about this new sophisticated camera that I have here. Only thing is, I didn't want to start an entire thread each time. So here's a topic that everyone can ask questions in regards to the usage of this camera and hopefully we can get some help to those in need(like myself)

I'll start... :-)

I upgraded from a T3i so things seem quite different on this cam.

1. When I had the t3i, I'd be able to click the 'q' button(in manual mode) and the menu would pop it. I could then go through the menu items and change and select, then change each individual one. When I click 'q' on this 5d3, the menu pops up, but only allows me to select the "Auto Lighting Optimizer", "card record location", and "record quality". But by clicking the info button theres more settings displayed on the screen, I just cant change them with the joystick. Is there anyway to be able to allow me to select the other options and chamge them(ie AWB, Picture style, AF) Mind you, this is when shooting in live view mode... (I hope my question isn't hard to understand. )

2. On the T3i, video mode had its seperate location on the mode dial. So when I wanted to record video, I'd change the mode dial to video and all of my previously used settings were there. Well here, I would go video mode in manual, but when doing so, it would still have my picture settings. Anyway to set it up so that in manual mode while on pictures it has one set of settings, but when I flip the switch to video, my video settings come into play, or must I change the settings everytime I switch modes?

PS. Im currently still reading the manual. This is the first manual I've ever actually read in my life lol.

5D3 one shot AF

I would like to say first off I love the 5D3 AF and think it is very good. It is very accurate and has allowed me do do things I couldn't have dreamed about with my 5D2. However, there is one tiny issue that kind of bugs me and I was curious if anyone else has experienced this. I have two 5D3s and they both do this. With one shot AF in dim-dark situations it seems like it will focus quickly at first and then hunt a little before it finally gives me the red light to shoot. During a reception last night I finally just switched over to AI servo and it was fast as lightning in pretty dim light. Accuracy was really good as well. I went into the menu and adjusted the setting that allows the camera to take the picture before "focus" is achieved in one shot mode and I liked it better. It is like the camera achieves focus almost instantly but the red light has a small delay. In a brief test I took several shots after focus but before the red light and found that almost all of the time the camera focuses just fine initially and doesn't benefit from the additional hunting before it shows red. I hope that makes since. Anyone else have a similar experience.

So what exactly does the 5D Mark III lack in terms of video?

I have never used any of my DSLRs to shoot video, so I know next to nothing about it. This is a topic about which I’m quite ignorant.

A lot of people complain that there are a lot of things the 5D Mark III lacks in terms of video.

I know that it doesn’t have uncompressed HDMI out, which (I’m guessing) means that you can’t hook it up to a TV and see the video in its full resolution.

What else does the 5D Mark III lack with regard to video?

The biggest thing for with the markIII is the AF. I shoot with 35L, 50L, 85L and 135L most (usually f/2 or less) and I find myself shooting faster and with fewer shots because the AF is so much more accurate and reliable.

I have to admit I didn't read all this troll-heave 5d3 stuff myself, but I remember one complaint: The af was said to be slow to pick up if all points are selected (like 1sec or so). It might be even Ken Rockwell who wrote this :-p .. is this true, and is it a sign that while the 5d3 has the same af as the 1dx the 5d3 is "under-powered" when it comes to af processing and needs more time to make up its mind than the 1dx will?

@v8beast: I guess there is no real argument about the 5d2's lacking af when it comes to tracking... that's why many people were raving about the 7d until now.

My only beef with 5d3 right now...

I don't care one bit about any "light leak" problems.

I don't care (too much) about the sensor being "inferior" to a Nikon.

I don't even care that I paid a small fortune for the camera.

The only thing I dislike at the moment, and its no fault of the camera, is that windows explorer doesn't give me a thumbnail for my raw files. Makes it harder to just scroll through and pick one or two photos to edit.

My 5d2 raws work.

Anyone have any ideas on when a codec or whatever will be available? I really have no idea how fast things like that get updated for new cameras.

And don't tell me to shoot Jpeg, or raw + jpeg. That messes with my workflow and its not worth it.
