Canon Teleconverters Question

Hi All,
I've been a lurking for a while and finally registered a few weeks ago. I love the site and Forum.

I had a question about Canon TC's. I was pretty sure that I read somewhere on the Forum where someone said that the version II TC's can be stacked directly on each other, but the newest, version III TC's can't. Is that true? What about stacking a version II to a version III?

Thanks!

What shape does everyone think the new high mega pixel body will be?

I was checking out studio cameras for future work with a design studio and was thinking about the body of the new 46mp that is rumoured to heading our way. I then compared them to the new EOS cinema cameras and thought the C100 body with missing firmware could be used. Any thoughts?

Why hasn't Canon incorporated Intervalometer into their DSLR's?!

I just bought a very cheap intervalometer from Amazon.. it works great but its just another thing to carry around when it isn't in use.. I know Nikon has intervalometers built in to their DSLR's cameras and some of the Powershots even have it! so why don't the higher DSLR's at least? it isn't a huge deal but it sure would be a very handy feature for stills guys and video guys! just curious to hear thoughts and how many would find this a useful feature? (and MagicLantern works to eliminate this need yes, but its not available for every one of Canon's DSLRs as far as i know?)

5D2 vs 7D

I know this question has been asked over and over and several reviews on the web have put both cameras through their paces, but after my own use of both cameras, here is my 2 cents.

First off, let it be said that a FF 7D is the 5D3. This is not about comparing the these two bodies. The 5D2 is basically a FF rebel (in terms of speed/raw features), with a far SUPERIOR color processor and sensor! (No offense anyone)

I own both cameras. It comes down to this, if you are shooting mainly stills, weddings and "canned" shots, the 5D2 cannot be beat in areas of image quality and low light handling.

However, for wildlife? The 7D is a workhorse and I love using mine. The more I shoot with it, the more I love it. I have been getting amazing images from it and it is far easier to use than I first gave it credit for. It is very fast and a "NOW" camera. It does what you want exactly when you want it done!

I am simply suggesting that a camera that can cost well over a grand less than the 5D3, and upwards of $600 less than the 5D2 and twice as fast as the 5D2, one has to stand up and take notice. When Canon does decide to make a "7D Mark II" they have their work cut out for them. For an APS-C camera, the 7D is as close to perfect as it can be and I for one cannot wait to see what they consider a "replacement" for the 7D! Yes, crop sensors have limits, just as FF bodies do... but the image quality and advantages (speed) of the 7D outweigh the 5D2 in real world shooting!

If you buy one, you will not be disappointed. I haven't been... (shots taken with the 7D, pics sized down for posting, full size rez photos are much, much nicer!)

EDIT:All of these shots were hand-held, no tripods, no "canned" shots. Ah, one more thing, the first 2 shots (macros) were taken with my beloved EF-s 60mm macro, the horror!!! :) I own the EF 100mm macro as well and I will not give up my EF-s 60mm macro for ANYTHING! Amazing lens!

Setting Sharpness At 0 To Better Detect Out of Focus Areas

I think I read this somewhere one time that some people set their cameras to 0 for sharpness to make it easier to tell if the shot is actually in focus or not on the LCD. Similar to how you get a focussing screen without the tiny micro lenses which make it look sharper than it really is. Is there any weight to this at all? Of course in post you can set it to whatever you actually want.

Canon EOS 3D Outed by B&H Photo [CR0]

So…..

I received a screenshot that showed an EOS 3D being outed by B&H Photo. It seems to be making the rounds around the web and at the 30th email about it, I have decided to post it.

I am 99.9% sure this is a hoax, as B&H Photo is on holiday and I doubt they’d be adding and removing products that haven’t been announced. Even if a new camera is coming for PhotoPlus, this is way too soon for B&H Photo to be notified of new products. Not to mention the fact that the manufacturer number 5266B002 is for the PowerShot Elph 510HS. Most of the specs here have been taken from the Canon EOS-1D X, as you can see from the lowercase “p” in MP. If you search the 5D Mark III or 7D, you get a different way to show megapixels. The kerning of the 46.1mp also seems to be off. Hoax, hoax, hoax!

Here’s the screenshot making the rounds, make of it what you will. Notice the [CR0] rating… :)

Why you should take your camera to family Weddings

Just got back from my daughter's wedding in Brooklyn and so glad I took my camera! She told me she wanted me to just relax and enjoy the fun, but I took the camera and got shots of the family events and pre-ceremony, when the paid photographer wasn't there. In addition, I got the shots of her coming down the aisle, which he missed completely. Said his card filled up (persnally I always change cards immediately before the ceremony). He had a 5d2 and a 5dc, so I'm not sure why he didn't switch to camera 2, perhaps it was too tight due to a telephoto lens.

Canon 16-35mm II + Reikan FocCal Pro --- Tips

Hi guys,
I bought Reikan FocCal Pro about a month ago. Believe it or not, I have not yet install the software. I’m going to take 1-2 days off from work to calibrate do microadjustment on my lenses.

My lenses are:
1. 16-35 II - this is the lens I’m going to calibrate first
2. 24-70 II - this lens is sharp. Let see if the lens gets any better after calibration
3. 70-200 f2.8 IS II - this lens is sharp. Let see if the lens gets any better after calibration
4. 50mm f1.4 – I’m so happy with 24-70 II, I now no longer need this lens. Will sell soon

Body: 5D III

This will be my first time doing microadjustment. Also, Reikan FocCal Pro is my first software as a tool.

Any tips from CRs members are greatly appreciated.

Looking for small flashes

I am thinking of getting something better for my macro set up. I have a Novoflex bracket with 2 flexible arms that I have been using but with 580 and 430 attached it's too damn big and heavy. I have a Phottix manual triggers that I can use but I can't find a small flash that has a manual mode. Something like 270 I think would work good but no M mode :( I am trying to avoid buying dedicated macro flash...for now.

Since Canon now has a wireless transmitter, what are the chances that they will release small flash (270 III?) with wireless receiver?

Older L lens repair 400mm 2.8L II (non-IS)

I own the pre-IS 400mm f/2.8L II and see that it is not listed on the CPS repair eligible list. My lens is working great at the moment, but I am concerned that if the USM fails or something else goes wrong that I am going to have a very expensive paperweight. I am considering selling it while I can.

Does anyone know where I can get it serviced? Parts availability?

DPReview and DxOMark to partner for lens testing

So, it seems (http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/News/DxOMark-news/DPReview-and-DxOMark-to-partner-for-lens-testing) that at last DPReview is trying to be a little bit more objective and quantitative. Their reviews are the best out there (to the best of my very limited knowledge), but sometimes here and there they sounded rather subjective and arbitrary: I assume they want to take a different approach from now on.

The DxOMark overall scores, as a weighted average of scores on different performances, don't make much sense, but I guess that the collaboration is going to be an occasion to review that approach as well. I, as usual, will just pay attention to the plain measurements.

Considering a P&S SX40 or SX50 as a second camera to carry with my DSLRs

I shoot sports with my 7D and landscapes/cityscapes with my 5D2. It seems that carry both on any shoot makes little sense especially with the extra weight. I'm considering an SX40 or SX50 to fit that role. Ideally a 1DX or 1D4 as the primary with the 5D2 and 7D as secondary is best but not at 20x the expense. Any thoughts? I like the reach and fps of the SX50 but the SX40's larger aperture is appealing. Thanks for your opinions.

Got caught in the rain (5Dmk3, 5Dmk3, 7D boddies soaked)

Ok so I got caught in a freak storm over the weekend and all my gear is soaking wet, the list includes:

5DMK3
5DMK2
7D
70-200mm f/2.8 IS II
50mm f/1.2
50mm f/1.4
11-16 f/2.8
3 battery grips for the cameras
2 580EXII Flashes

We were shooting at a festival and had to hike 2 miles to our car in the rain after 20x20ft tents started to get ripped from the ground and thrown around like newspapers in the city streets. All gear was on for 10 minutes in the rain, since we were more worried about a possible tornado. Once we realized that the cameras were still on they were shut down and then were still rained on for another 20 minutes. The 7D looks like it took most damage with water floating in the top LCD screen.

My question is how long should I keep these in the rice to be safe? They have been in rice since 2pm on Saturday. I have shoots starting this thursday and I cannot really afford another camera, especially since I bough the MK3 literally a week ago last Monday.

Canon EF 28-135 / EF-S 17-85 / EF-S 15-85

Hi folks

I'v just upgraded my camera from a 400d to a 50d and I'm thinking it might be time to change my main use lens. Right now i'v got the 28-135mm but i'm not overly impressed with the sharpness of it, and the lens creep drives me mad. I'm considering selling it on and going for one of the shorter EF-S versions. Is the 17-85 an improvement over the 28-135? And is the 15-85 worth paying almost twice as much for than the 17-85. I'v no plans to get a full frame camera anytime soon, unless the 6D price drops massively.

Thanks

85mm f1.8 or 100mm f2.0 ???

Hello,

I see there are and were a lot of topics about lenses that we cannot really compare (different category or budget)
But i'm about to buy a (budget) portrait lens and i'm really confused..

What you guys think about the 85mm f1.8 and 100mm f2.0 ???
(overal quality: Resolution, CAs, Focusing, Bokeh, etc)

Or maybe a third party lens like sigma 85mmf1.4 (is it worth the money)

Thank you in advance for your experience feedbacks

Canon 70-200 f2.8 mk2 and MK3 x2 converter.

I tried out this combination today for an experiment to see how it performed. Popped them on the old 7D and took a few shots of comorants fishing in a local river. Just got them back and whilst ive never used x2 converters before im amazed at how good the shots are (quality wise not put em in Nat Geo wise). They needed a little sharpen but printing at A3 will be no problem. The 70-200 continues to amaze me at how good it is. Hand held 200mm plus converter and 7D maxed out to 640mm and it nailed them. The autofocus was a little slow but ok for static sitting birds but the sharpness was excellent. Yes a little soft but nothing too bad at all. Canons latest glass zooms, converters and primes are excellent. Now whens me new 500 f4 gonna arrive!!!!!
