5DIII same ISO performance as 5DII

Tried both cameras at ISO 6400 and RAW files are virtually the same, (the 5DIII just shows a bit a front focusing with my copy of the 24-105).
JPGs are a complete different story, but I cannot see the high ISO performance improvement everybody is talking about.
Did anybody experienced the same?
I'm not saying that I'm disappointed with the camera, in my opinion AF and silent shooting are a great improvement for wedding photography, it's just that the sensor technology seems exactly the same.

Canon Body Pollyanna Thread

Lately there's been a lot of griping on this forum regarding Canon's recent troubles getting from announcement to volume shipping on some key products. So, in the spirit of Monty Python, let's look on the bright side of Canon! N.B.: all of this is for entertainment purposes only!

I'll start:

Given Nikon's highly successful launches (D800 & D4), as compared to Canon's struggles with "ready for primetime" bodies and lenses, there will be a shakeup in Canon's attitude such that, in the future, they will no longer aim to launch products that just stay about even with Nikon, but completely blow it out of the water. Based on this, we can expect the following from the 5D4:
• Sensor covers the entire light circle, so no body rotation needed to switch between portrait and landscape; it can also shoot square, 4:3, 16:9, etc
 • 50MP in 3:2 aspect mode; 85MP in full light circle mode
 • Clean, portrait-quality stills at ISO 256K

Theory about the slow painful release of the 5D MIII

Is it possible the slow release is intentional, using the consumer to test it so they can fix the bugs before a major roll out?

The other option is they can't produce enough to meet demand, which honestly seems ridicules, they knew what the demand for this camera would be.

Based on what is happening with various issues coming to light, the first idea seems very plausible.

Entry-level video production

To the videographers on the forum:

My young nephew (like every other artistically inclined person under 35) has joined some fellow conspirators with the intention to perpetrate video production. They've gone so far as to hire an attorney and incorporate. They think they'll buy a T3i, a $400 zoom, a few accesories--spend maybe $1600 to $1800--and wow the world on the basis of their creativity. They have some horsepower as far as writing, on-screen talent, even marketing goes, but I don't think one of them knows an f-stop from a drive mode from a liquid head.

I'm the family photographer, and my nephew has approached me about how to best invest their limited budget. My sense is that the kindest thing I could do for these kids is to put a pin to their bubble, but I'm basically a stills photographer and I can't critique their game plan with the kind of authority and specificity that might get their attention before they make some costly mistakes. I shoot a 5D2 and I do know that it doesn't take $25000 worth of equipment to make an adequate corporate video. I also know that digital has made it relatively easy for anyone to take a decent picture and raised the technical standards for taking one that stands out. Since video is the big thing among the younger generation, I'm sure the same reality applies to a higher power.

I presume that serious video production requires at least a half-serious camera, a solid tripod, a decent liquid-damped head, a lamp (and a stand) or two for modeling the talent, maybe a basic shoulder mount , and surely off-camera audio recording capability--as well as a few other things that might not occur to a novice. But maybe not. I'd appreciate if a couple of forum members who do video full-time or part-time (say as an adjunct to a wedding business) would take 20 minutes to address a letter to my nephew--his name is Dave--about what a realistic entry-level video lash-up includes and what it costs. I'll refer him to this thread.

Thanks in advance,

Curmudgeon

AF point patterns?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any idea what the reasoning has been for the various AF focus point patterns employed on various iterations of Canon SLRs/DSLRs over the years? Having recently made the jump from a 350D to a 5D3, and having played with a friend's 7D, I've been interested in the employment of horizontal/vertical cross arrangements, diagonal arrays of points, to the orthogonal grid used on the 5D3. Are there particular pros/cons to the orientation of the array (if we could assume density, quality and accuracy of points being equal)...?

Not sure if I should upgrade from Canon 60d to 5dmkiii. Please Help !!)

I have placed a few posts talking about which lenses I wanted to get with my new Canon 5d mk iii. I just found out that in order to get it I would have to sell my current Canon 60d with 17-55 2.8, 15-85mm variable aperature. I would also have to put in $500 more out of pocket than I can afford right now. I have had it for three weeks with a 30 day return option and I love it. It is the kit. I am just not sure if its worth the extra $500 beyond the already sizeable investment. I have an upcoming trip to San Diego, CA and I really wanted to learn this camera so I could be comfortable with it buy August.

My first question is should I just go for it with the added expense?

Keep my setup and sell the 15-85 and buy the 70-200 f4IS & maybe the 50mm 1.4?

Or a third suggestion?

I am just trying not to make an emotional decision since I love the 5d3. I know a lot of you suggested invest in glass so now is the time I am seriously considering that over the full frame option.

My main gripe is the iso performance above 800 on the 60d which is why I was looking at it.

5D Mark III Optimal Video Settings

For the 5D Mark III, there is no shortage of advice on what values to set Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation and Color Tone for pros who want the most flexible files and dynamic range, to then take the footage and then grade everything in post.

I was wondering for those of you with extensive experience handling 5D III video files, what have you found to be the optimal settings on these values for best out of the camera results for us mere mortals who often lack the time for post?

5DII Vs 5DIII for my needs

Here's my issue. I've been waiting, as we all have for the 5DIII. Now that its here, I am wondering if the 5DII will meet my needs and I can use the monies saved elsewhere.

I have been shooting my 30D for 5 years now and I am ready to upgrade to a full frame sensor. I have L glass so am in good shape there.

Primary shooting will be in good light either studio or outdoors. I am just starting to shoot for a book project and am wanting better resolution as well as IQ files to work with. I dont shoot anything of super speed so higher FPS isn't a requirement. Since the resolution didn't change much from the 5DII to the 5DIII that doesn't seem significant either.

I don't shoot weddings or much low light shooting so that's not critical either. No great needs for super high ISO. Am I missing anything else?

I know there are hundreds of you guys who shoot with the 5D so please let me know what you think.

Thanks for you help.

file name scramble

Tools menu>file name>User setting 2.

Put in any three letters you want. Canon will subsequently name your files with the three letters IT chooses, and in whatever order IT feels like.

MCB + Image size became _CBL0136 (image size missing), then _CBMxxxx

I then transposed the letters to try to get the sequence I wanted, but

BCM + Image size became _CMMxxxx

I admit to being mildly dyslexic, but...

1DX affect on used 300 and 400 2.8L Prices

Right now, there are lots of 1D4 shooters with 300 and 400 2.8Ls that give them 390mm and 520mm effective focal lengths. Will these shooters be upgrading to the 1Dx? Will they be selling their lenses or adding a 1.4x teleconverter?

I want a 300 2.8 and am hoping I can pick up one up cheaper after this summers 1DX release.

Any thoughts? Anyone 1DX upgraders out there?

From LensRentals.com

Roger from LensRentals.com had this to say today about 3 new 5D Mark III’s they received directly from Canon.

Please read the entire two paragraphs.

I just got 3 new 5D IIIs this morning. Compared to the 90 some odd previous ones, the new ones all have a much thicker, stiffer plastic cover on the TOP (not main) LCD with a slightly larger black border. On all of the previous cameras the top LCD cover was thin enough that if you pressed on it firmly it would touch the LCD (apparent because the LCD under your finger would turn black for a second). The new cover is much stiffer and you can’t press hard enough to touch the LCD screen.

I can’t say this is the change that’s being made, but these recent camera came direct from Canon so it’s certainly possible. And it’s also possible that this simply means Canon used up all of their first supply of top LCD covers and the second is just slightly different for no real reason.

Roger and I are friends, and he knows gear about as well as anyone else I personally know.

Public Service Announcement

Please don’t start pressing hard your top LCD covers. Thanks David

HELP! Shooting my first wedding tomorrow!!!

Hey everyone!

Any advice on gear or general pointers for shooting my first wedding tomorow? Luckily, the bride was on a super low budget so she is not expecting much from me as I am working pro bono (it's her wedding gift). I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer (not my main line of work), but I have started to get a couple of of jobs in the last month.

I have listed my gear below and I won't be buying anything new since the event is tomorrow.

5D II
35 1.4 L
24-105 L
70-200 2.8 II L
430exII
Tripod

I use LR4, Photoshop 6 beta, and DxO 7 for post work. I plan on using blurb to put a book together for the couple at the end.

I really appreciate and calue any advice from the CR community and thank everyone in advance! I really take pride in my pictures and hope to capture the day well for my friend.

Cheers!

Canon releases are getting expensive!

Let's see if I have this correct.
The last 4 canon announcements go like this:

1. 1Dc - $10,000 or $15,000 not sure which
2. C500 - $35,000
3. 5D3 - $3,500
4. 1Dx - $6,900

Sure glad to see them aiming their efforts at the 0.01% who can afford this stuff.
They have not announced anything for under $2000 for some time.
I am hoping this means they have a wonderful new 7d or 70d that will be worth switching to.

Lens focus tracking data

Does anyone know if there is a site that looks at focus tracking in lenses in a measured way instead of just "its fast/slow" or "one 1 in 5 shots has usable focus"?

I'm hoping someone is alternating between targets at different distances and recording change time. Maybe also using something that moves a target in a repeatable way while firing off photo to see how on/off focus they are?

Wide Angle Lens for outdoor landscape & occasionally indoor

I need a wide angle lens for outdoor landscape and occasionally indoor. The two lenses I have in mind are Canon 16-35 II and 17-40. The prices between these two are HUGE different.

I would love to have your feedbacks on these lenses: Pros Vs Cons - distortion, sharpness, soft edges etc…since I never own any wide angle before.

I will shoot with my 5D III.

Thanks guys, Dylan

Light Meters?

How many of you use a light meter? If so, what are you usually shooting with them? I was looking into them on the interwebs the other day, I’m really surprised how expensive they are. Even used older ones on ebay still command a hefty sum.

I’m guessing the majority of people who use them are doing studio/portrait work. Do you still find yourself using one as much as you used to, as in camera metering has improved over the last several years?

EOS 1D C suggested price!!!

Good morning everyone!! i would like to read your comments on the price of canon's EOS 1D C. Perhaps i'm missing something here, because i can't find anything that would worth a $9000 price increase over the price of the 1DX. Not to mention the fact that potential owners should spend several thousand $$$ for even one cine lens. All comments and views are welcome!!

Need Help - Compatible? - Tamron Telephoto Lens 572d AF 70-300mm lens

Hi All,

I am totally a newbie here and need some help, my friend is buying a new camera and has an old Sony Alpha 100. She also has a Tamron telephoto lens (572d AF 70-300mm) and was wondering if this lens is compatible with the new Canon 5D Mark III.

If it were compatible then her parents can save the money on the tele-lens (and will be more willing to chip in on buying the camera for her photography work, also she can get a good camera instead of a Sony).

If its not compatible, are there any sort of lens convertors that she can get?

Thanks guys, really appreciate your help!
