Canon EF-S 18-300 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM on the Way? [CR1]

A new EF-S superzoom

There is really only one lens in Canon lineup that I can’t think of a nice thing to say about it, and that is the EF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS. From the subpar optics, no USM, terrible build quality, high price and the industry worst “lens creep”. What can I say that’s positive?

I have been told that a new superzoom with STM should be expected in 2013. There will be a superzoom for EF-S and and and affordable non-L one for EF, apologies to the 28-300L, but you’re too big and expensive for most people to carry around. No mention on the focal length for the EF lens, but a 24-300 would be nice. The EF-S version will get the new STM motor found in the recent EF 40 f/2.8 STM and 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. Both could possibly be available in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2013.

I definitely welcome an upgrade to the 18-200, and a nice long walk-around for full frame would be nice too.

5D MKII Used?

What's a fair going price for it these days? Looking to close a deal on a 5D MKII $1400 with 43k actuation. Is there a lot of life left on it? Thanks. I'm hoping it's still a solid camera as the MK III is too rich and 6D is somewhat of a rip off. Thanks.

Excellent shorter lens with TC vs Average longer lens

Was just checking the Samyang site and see they've got an 800mm mirror lens and a 650-1300mm zoom. A second hand shop near my work has a Meade 1000mm f/11 mirror lens for sale. And I see a lot of similar lenses for sale on eBay. A quick google search suggests the image quality from these lenses isn't great. Unfortunately...it seems you get what you pay for.

But my question is this: -

If you had a 300mm f/4, would your cropped image appear sharper than a cheap 1000mm+ lens? What about a 300mm with a teleconverter or two? Is there any point to buying a cheaper, longer lens?

Confused about 600EX-RT and 5D mark II

I am thinking about upgrading my 430EX flash for my 5D Mark II. I am looking for something with more power and the ability to control my 430EX off camera. I am an enthusiast who shoots portraits and a few weddings.

I was pretty sure I was going to get the 580EX II until Canon announced the 600EX-RT.

option 1: Buy a couple of used 580 EX IIs
I know the 580 EX II can drive my 430EX. I read one user say that they keep one on the camera and one cooling in a bag and just switch them out when one overheats. Seems like a good idea. However, I wonder if the money is better spent investing in the radio technology of the 600.

option 2: Buy a 600EX-RT
I have read several posts on this forum talking about the 5D Mark II's limitations with the 600EX-RT and I am confused. I think the 600 will work with the 5DII for basic on camera flash and basic off-camera flash, is that right? I understand that I can't use "in camera" controls, but I don't think that is very important to me. Can I still control a group of flashes with it on the 5DII using the flash's menu? Can I trigger some flashes optically (like my 430EX) and some through radio like the 600 (or 440EX)?

Thank you very much for any help you can give me.

About to buy the 135L, and then saw this....

I'm not a big fan of DXOMark but at the end of the day I'll peruse all available review sites when making a buying decision. So when looking at their lens reviews, I noticed that they give the Canon 85 1.8 the HIGHEST resolution score of ANY lens they've reviewed...including nikon, zeiss, sigma...etc. I know it's a very good lens but I find this hard to believe.

They say they're reviewing the 135L in October...I'm correct in assuming the 135 will score higher, right? OR, did they just get a fantastically sharp copy of the 85 1.8 when they did their review?

I'm going to buy the 135L, but I'm just curious as to what others think about this, and what the explanation is for their resolution score for the 85 1.8?

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Lenses/Camera-Lens-Ratings/Optical-Metric-Scores

EDIT...a couple of posts have come in illustrating some of the inaccurate DXO "scores" for lenses:

1. 70-200 2.8 ii is somehow scored much lower than the orginal version, and much lower than the nikon, sigma, and sony 70-200's.

2. The canon 300 2.8 ii, probably the best lens Canon makes, scores a 15 from DXO. For all the lens scores that were scored using the 5d2 as the body, (66 of them listed) they rank the 300 2.8ii in 57th place out of 66 lens scores. For context, that's about a tie with the 16 score they gave the Tamron 28-300, and the 14 for the Canon 55-200.

Manual Mode T2i with auto ISO

I recently found that in manual mode if I set aperture and shutter speed but leave ISO on auto the metering will adjust the ISO to get the "right" exposure.
This is like AV mode but I also get control on shutter speed.

This can be very useful.
One situation is where I know my aperture but I want to vary shutter speed based on focal length to avoid camera shaking. Now I can let camera metering take over and bump up ISO when I am using larger focal lengths with faster shutter speed.

How many of you guys use manual mode this way?

What are your thoughts?

7D + 70-200mm F/2.8L II or 5D III + Extender 1.4 III + 70-200mm F/2.8 IS II

Hi,

Which of these combinations would work better for taking photos of a non-professionally lit stage (middle school) from the back of the auditorium?

1) 7D + 70-200mm F/2.8L II
2) 5D III + 70-200mm F/2.8 IS II (would have to enlarge it more in post)
3) 5D III + Extender 1.4 III + 70-200mm F/2.8 IS II

I shot it last year with a 7D and the 70-200mm F2.8 IS (not II). The raw shots were usable, but I want to do better.

Would I get better shots with the 5D III and the 700-200mm F2.8 IS II and just crop/enlarge the photos?

or would the 5D III and the 700-200mm F2.8 IS II + 1.4 Extender III do better?

The 7D gives me the automatic 1.6X enlargement, but the 5D III is more light sensitive.

I thought about buying the Extender 1.4X III but is worried about the one stop less of light.

Thanks!

Broken 24-105...what should I do??

So my 24-105 with 5D Mark III fell in the pool and was fully submerged. Both lens and camera stopped working. I sent both into Canon and they fixed the 5DIII for free under warranty. But they said that there was too much corrosion in the 24-105 and that it would cost me $400 in parts and $400 in labor to fix it. I politely declined since I purchased the lens for $800. I had an engineer friend look at it and he said that the computer chip is just corroded but everything else looks fine.

The lens is less than a year old (got it last Christmas) and it looks pristine on the outside, zero scratches or dents. What should I do? Is there a cheaper place to get it fixed than Canon? Where could I get that chip to replace it?

I read somewhere than if you have a lens that's beyond repair you could exchange it for a refurbished one with Canon for a cost.

Have any of you ever had a lens that was broken? How did you fix it?

Sharpest Ultra-wide Lens for Full Frame

I currently have the Canon 60D and will upgrade to either 5D Mk III or 6D. I currently own the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 DX Pro and absolutely love it. However, once I make the jump to full frame I am contemplating buying one of the following UWA lens. I currently have the Canon 24-70L as well.

1) Canon 16-35 f2.8L
2) Canon 17-40 f4L
3) Canon 14 f2.8L II [not too eager as it's way too expensive :( ]

Though I hoped there was a 14-24 version from Canon. :(

Of the 3 mentioned, which one delivers greater contrast and sharpness. If there are any other lens from Canon or other brands that will delivers stellar sharpness in the center of the frame as well as in the corners then I am open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Portrait Lens

I know there are many great lens for portraits, but due to price and other lens I've decided my next purchase will be either the 24-105L f4 or a 100L f2.8 macro.

I guess the decision will mostly come down to whether I value to versatility of the zoom, or the bonus of macro.

But what I wanted to ask on this site, is will there be much difference in the quality of portrait shots, taken at the same focal length, at say f5.6 and above?

Thanks everyone.

Canon 7D - should i wait or not?

I have decided to upgrade my current kit to a higher spec Canon 7D body. The reason i have chosen this is i want a camera for sports shooting and wildlife photography and the 7D seems to be the best kit in the current non pro range with the highest fps.

I have 2 pondering points...

1. the camera was released in 2009, surely that means there will be an upgrade in 2013....is it worth waiting or buying it now based on its price

2. the camera uses compact flash, now im used to using sd cards. Is CF something that is phasing out or is it a better writing medium for fast transfer?? I see the higher spec canon camera's such as the 1D still use compact flash.

Thanks

24-70 MK II or 70-200 MK II?

I am going FF in October with 5D MKIII
I would like to add the 24-70 f/2.8 MK II. I like the aperture f/2.8 & zoom flexibility in one lens for indoor photography.
However, maybe the 70-200 f/2.8 MK II may be a better option. I don’t have experience on the different ranges (from 24 to 200) on a FF, just the crop (7d) So, I don’t know what I will notice or miss.
I couldn’t check all my files but I would say 1/3 of my photos are between 24-70, 1/3 between 70-200 and 1/3 between 200 to 300mm.
I currently own a 24-105mm for walk around. I really like this zoom for outdoor photography because it is giving me a good range which is important to me.
I currently own a 70-300mm L for sports mainly (with my 7D) but as walk around lens as well (small , not too heavy)
What would you do? 24-70 MK II or 70-200 MK II?

Ps (I will also add the 135mm f/2 to my primes)

Hoya Clear filter HD or EVO for 85mm f/1.2

I plan on buying 85mm f/1.2 and I'd like to protect that piece of glass by adding a clear filter.

The price difference between the two above mentioned is $30 i.e. EVO is almost double the price of HD.
Do you thing EVO is worth that extra money?

Does anybody use Clear filter on 85mm? I guess IQ will not be impacted, at least not to the bear eye.
And one more not to open a new topic. Those who use 5D III, does 85 focus faster on it than on 5D II?

Non L sharp telephoto lenses

HI,

When I travel I usually shoot on wide lenses, architecture and landscapes 65% of the time on my 17-40, 20% of the time I shot on 50 1.4 street photography, and in my bag I always have my 70-200 2.8 IS II for just in case, and when I walk all day long, after a while the weight of it starts to annoy me, so can you guys recommend me a tele lens with is pretty sharp over f8.

(Not necessary Canon lens)

Thanks
