I'm pretty new to photography (one year, more or less) and want to buy my first 50mm prime lens next month. I've been reading quite a few reviews and posts about 50mm lenses from Canon and Sigma, and was mainly considering getting the Canon 50/1.4, but then there's this focussing issue many folks talk about... I know it's not an expensive lens, but considering there is no AF microadjustment on my 60D, well, I'm not sure if it's worth buying it anymore. If I'm not lucky and my copy is not a very good one, well, will I be able to live with it? Any thoughts? Thanks!

and their response is they dont have any problems

Will the 1DX have a strong anti-aliasing filter (optical low-pass filter) as in the 5D3? Is there any indication of this?

Trying to do a setup with 14 or so 5D Mark 3's all taking a picture at the same time, and downloading their images wirelessly to a single computer. Anyone know if this can be done reliably? Was planning on doing the triggering with pocketwizards (I'm familiar with them, and know that they'll work), but it seems like this would be the best option for downloading the pictures.

Lemme know if you have any thoughts!

Got my three flashes and the manual. Seems to be working fine (very basic testing) with a 5DmkII

In the manual it states that E-TTL is not possible with the older cameras, such as the 1D, 1Ds, 1V, Elan, 50, Rebel 2000, etc.

It also says that with a pre 2012 camera you have to use a flash sync speed 1 increment slower and high speed sync is not available. Again minimal testing, but I'm using HSS successfully, and am not compensating by a stop. Even though I'm getting the !Tv warning (occasionally) they said I would get.

Is it possible to get the Q button to behave like the INFO button as it relates to 'Display Shooting Settings'?

When you are in still shooting mode, if you press INFO 3 times (or fewer if you have removed Display camera settings and Electronic Level) you are presented with the Display Shooting Settings window. If you click on the Q button, you cycle between being able make changes via the Multi-controller or pushing the buttons on top of the camera. Page 337 of the manual describes this.

My question is, when you press the Q button when the rear display is blank, you also get a Display Shooting Settings window. The difference is, if you try to bring up the on screen display to change, say the focus points, the screen goes blank. That said, there is a definite difference in the way these two buttons behave.

Any insight into this?

I have just gotten my 2x III extender and wanted to test out focal lenght. I shot the first four with my 5D II, and then I wanted to see how the 640 effective focal length would be, and I shot the last with my wife's 600D. I notice some color differences. I have been thinking about getting a 7D as a secon camera, but my question is: Is the quality of the 7D versus the 600D large?

What's a reasonable price to pay for a single owner 50d body with 18k on it, with canon grip, and original battery, charger, and all boxes?

Is $549 too much?

I have a 5D mkII and mkIII and a 70-200 2.8IS mkII.
I noticed recently that it seems to have some extra vignetting in the corners at certain focal lengths (seeminly beyond typical vignetting on FF camera). 70mm seems normal, 100mm seems the worst where the vignette has the sharpest edge. 135mm and 200mm it's apparent, but the fade is softer, still bad though in my opinion. I find that putting on filters makes it worse. I put on a thin, normal sized clear 77mm filter on and the vignette intensifies. I've never had one clear filter add vignetting of any kind, especially when zooming in.

I can't find any samples of from my old mark I where there is this problem. And I've rented 3 different copies of the mark II (3 different serial numbers) where I've also not seen the problem.

I have sent this lens to Canon 3 times in the past month. Each time I get it back, they tell me that it's normal vignetting and the lens is up to spec. It's currently still at Canon and I'm battling it out with the engineer trying to convince him there really is a problem with this copy.

I use this lens primarily for landscape work, where I have to mess with contrast in a hazy city. Adding contrast obviously magnifies the problem. But like I said, I've never encountered the problem on 3 other copies of the lens, nor my old mark I under boosted contrast situations.

When I apply lens vignette correction in both LR3 and LR4 I get this weird halo effect where the lense's natural vignetting seems to be taken out, but this extra vignetting remains. When I spit out .jpgs from my 5DIII I don't get the halo effect quite as much, but the corners are still clearly vignetting.
I understand that software lens correction both by Adobe and Canon are not perfect, but on every other 70-200, or any other lens I've used I get much much better results than I am with this lens.

I sent in to Canon a series of tests from this lens on my 5DIII with different focal lengths, both with and without the clear filter. All tests were done at f5.6 where vignetting should be fairly mellow to begin with, and it's the stop I shoot at the most. I also put focus at infinite where the problem seemed worse, and where I typically use my lens.

MY QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

BELOW are the two .jpgs of the lens at 100mm f5.6 focus:infinite on 5Diii with in-camera vignette removal applied, one with a clear filter, one without. Picture Style is standard with contrast bumped to max.
Does this seem typical for most of you? Do you experience this kind of vignetting even after in-camera removal?
Am I crazy and these images are just fine? BELOW are also links to the RAW files for these .jpgs where you can see them without vignette removal and with contrast at Adobe's standard.

ALSO, would anyone be willing to replicate my tests with their own 5D, either markII or markIII and their 70-200 2.8IS mkII? If so, here was my setup:
-Tripod shooting large, white posterboard with direct sunlight.
-100mm, f5.6, focus:infinite, evaluative meetering with no compensation (so the white posterboard turned out grey)
-Can you do a test with and without a standard clear or UV filter.
-Feel free to do 70mm, 135mm, and 200mm as well.
-And can you email the RAW results:

I'm not typically super critical of my gear. I only am making a stink to canon and now here because I saw the bad results in some of my recent landscapes. I don't want to have to carefully add a grad in Lightroom every time the problem shows up in a real photograph.

And as a side note, I haven't shot with a crop camera for a while. So I'm not comparing to what it looks like compared to a crop frame camera, where there is less vignetting overall.

And please don't tell me that I need to stop obsessing with my gear and should just go outside and shoot. This is a problem that has come up in real situations, and I'm trying to remedy the problem with Canon, or get convinced by some of you who can do the test yourselves and show me that I'm out of my mind and there is no problem.

I've had my 5D3 for a week now. Given the depth and breadth of the discussion surrounding this DSLR there were no major surprises. I expected to be impressed—and I have been. There have also been a few little things here and there that I didn't expect. I thought I would mention a few of them.

1. I don't get 6fps with my Sandisk Extreme III 30MB/s cards. They aren't fast enough. The Sandisk 60MB/s are.

2. The AF system is great—no, make that GREAT! However, not all lenses of a particular maximum aperture work the same. In other words, some f/4 lenses will be able to use more of the focus points than others. Put another way, some focus points may be "cross-type" with some f/4 lenses but not with others. What lenses work with particular focusing points is spelled out in the manual but there's no explanation as to why. I'd love to know. It doesn't seem related to the release date of the lens.

3. The metering system seems noticeably improved. With each new generation, Canon touts some improvement to their metering system. Honestly, I've never noticed much difference from the EOS 3 to the 10D, 5D, and 5D2. That's not the case this time.

4. Auto exposure bracketing can be up to 16 stops apart. (To be clear, that's a 16 stop difference between the darkest exposure and the brightest one. The actual DR captured can be greater than 16 stops.) I'm hard pressed to imagine a scene that couldn't be fully captured with this range of adjustment. And, unlike Nikon (as it has been explained to me at least), the interval between brackets remains fully adjustable in 1/3 stop increments.

5. LOVE the +/- five stop exposure compensation. I would love it more if one could actually see what the EC setting was when it exceeds 3 stops in either direction. You can tell if you look at the quick control display on the rear LCD; but not on the top LCD panel or, more importantly, through the viewfinder. Disappointing.

6. Many first impressions described the 5D3 as feeling more "professional" or more "robust" and "rugged" than the 5D2. I always wondered what exactly this meant. The word I would use is "heavier". The 5D3 is only 10% heavier than the 5D2 (IIRC), but I was struck by how heavy it felt. My arm is just used to picking up the 5D2, I guess. I'll get used to it.

7. Like everyone else, I read about the "silent" shooting mode. Then I listened to audio clips of the regular mode versus silent mode and I thought to myself, "It's definitely quieter but not orders-of-magnitude quieter." Then I started reading all these glowing posts about the silent mode and how amazing it was. I decided that the audio comparisons I heard must not have done it justice. Turns out that the audio clips I heard were representative. There's a difference for sure but it's not like you're going to go unnoticed if you're shooting during a worship service. You'll just be less noticed.

8. Love the "grip" on the CF door. This is emblematic of all the little things that add up to making the 5D3 a nice upgrade.

I've been (and remain) critical of Canon for their apparent lack of effort in improving the base image quality coming off the sensor—particularly in regard to dynamic range. However, I think it would be a mistake to conclude that 5D3 doesn't improve on image quality when compared to the 5D2. Better focused images improve image quality and better exposed images improve image quality. To the extent that I rely on AF for focus and AE for exposure, the quality of my images has definitely improved regardless of what has or hasn't happened with the sensor. I'm really going to enjoy using this camera body for the next three or four years.

Sorry if this has been asked before (I didn't have much luck with the search function). What did you 5d2 users find was your maximum usable ISO without losing too much detail (for portraits or any other area of photography)? I was also curious if there is a specific NR program you all use or if LR 3 is 'good enough'. I've heard of several, but am curious what everyone uses! Thanks in advance.

I am not one who preordered. When Amazon and B&H has the words "in stock" what does this mean? Its available for immediate shipping and you will get it and B & H had the Kit version "instock" however when i tried to order it from B & H, there was a credit card glitch. By the time it was available on Monday it went from "instock" to "Preorder Limited quantity" and Amazon went to "Ships in 1 to 2 months". My question: did anyone order and receive this camera last week from either Amazon or B & H and received it?

I came across this review on Amazon and i had to laugh. It gave a sense of the seriousness and a reality check of this 5DM3 phenomenon weve all went through here on Canon Rumors. What is amusing is that most of the commenters on the review were pissed of at the review or even thought the guy was serious!

I have been thinking about getting the current 35L recently, but have seen inklings of a replacement coming soon...

Any timeframe/rumored specs out there? Or should I just not worry about it and purchase an already great lens?

The usable dynamic range of a Canon 5D MK3 RAW file at ISO 100 is up to 2 stops larger than of a 5D MK2 file. That is a big difference. In practice we found that the correct exposure in bright sunlight with the 5D MK3 was much easier than with the Canon 5D MK2. On both sides of the histogram, we always had 'space' left, which is the way it should be!

Two stops better at 100 ISO than the 5D Mk II - that's frickin' good.

I currently own a 5D3 and a 7D. I still have the 5D2 my 5D3 is meant to replace and am waiting for the market to clear a bit before selling it.

Yesterday I photographed a pair of hooded mergansers that I had earlier photographed with my 7D. The lens was the same - 70-200/2.8 II + 2x III, and the location was exactly the same. I also photographed the birds at the same exact location in the pond with both cameras. The only difference was the shots were taken several weeks apart.

I was curious to compare them, so I took two photos of the same merganser at the same location and compared them. The crop from the 7D made its version larger, but the following is what I noticed with my very unscientific experiment (partly due to laziness and partly because there are flaws in this test I will not post the crops). Here are two different shots from each shoot, but note that these are not the ones I compared. They won't tell you much about the quality of the cameras but they'll give you an idea of the conditions.

- The 5D3 had a huge advantage in noise. I had taken the 7D shots at ISO 800, while the 5D3 shots were taken at ISO 1600. Nevertheless the 7D had very noticeable noise while the 5D3 was significantly cleaner.
- The 5D3 had far more detail in the shot. I could see far more details in the feathers than the 7D - even when the crop was taken into account.
- The 5D3 seems to have better dynamic range. With the 7D the black parts of the bird were solid black, while with the 5D3 there was a lot more detail there. This may also have been an exposure issue.

When I look at this, I am seeing really no reason to keep the 7D. Other than having two more fps, the 5D3 outperforms it in every aspect - even when the crop is taken into account. Perhaps this may not be true for ISO 100, but for bird photography that is extremely rare.

My question is to those who also have both cameras. What have you noticed in the difference? I am not looking for theoretical discussions here but practical ones from other individuals who have used both cameras.

This is just a single test and ideally I should test both cameras on a tripod with the same subject at the same time, but I am curious if others have noticed the same thing. At this point I am strongly leaning towards selling the 7D and going back to a single body, with the proceeds going towards funding a future 600/4 II.

I tried to shoot my Nikkor 14-24mm on my new 5DIII, and the camera got very confused trying to sort out what the aperature was. It works great on my 5DII. Has anyone else had good/bad luck in marrying up this lens with the 5DIII?

I am weighing up the pros and cons of upgrading my bodies, namely a 40D to a T3i, whilst I can still recover some monetary value from the 40D

Leaving aside what I would like, but cannot afford............. Never has a 5Diii and a bag of Canon L Primes disappeared so fast!

I am looking for a body which will give me larger Raw Files with without a huge increase in noise. (I pull them with DXO in a Mac). In addition better low light sensitivity would be a plus.

Although I realize that with the T3i I will lose ergonomically (losing rear control dial) and the interchangeable screen (I use the Grid screen to aid composition) by the numbers it looks as if the T3i has a newer generation imager and image processor and also does not suffer from the noise issues of the 50D.

Whilst I would love the rugged construction that the 40D has, being brutally honest, only my ego can justify this build quality.

Does anyone have any opinions based on using the T3i for stills not Video (real world results as opposed to conjecture)

Art Morris, a world-renown bird photographer who is well-known for his use of f/8 AF, recently posted an article proclaiming his praise for the 5D Mark III and its AF (despite the lack of f/8 AF.) He indicates that the AF performance of the 5D III in the hands of a skilled Canon photographer is nothing less than stellar, producing an extremely high rate of keepers. Perhaps this will answer some of the questions about the capabilities of 5D III AF, IQ, etc. and whether it really is up to snuff or not:

As it turns out I was in Central Sensor Expand AF area. I plan on experimenting with all of the AF area selection modes. And I will of course be working hard on the BAA 5D Mark III User’s Guide. I currently have a 40D and have worked casually with it for the last 5 years. I would rate myself still a beginner since I have recently decided to shoot out of the "green box"

I love taking photos of my kids and my pets but I also love taking pics of my kids sports in this order.
1.Baseball 2.Football and 3.Cheer... (BB & FB are 95% daylight) Cheer can be indoor at times during comps)

I have recently upgraded a few lenses from my previous stash but they are so new I haven't really worked with them much yet.

I am in need of advise on a new camera. I was currently looking at the 7D. Would love the 5D lll but just can't justify for being so inexperienced at this time and not sure FF makes sense for my current needs.

Please advise on what would be the best equipment for my needs in your experience. I struggle with my current set up minus my new lenses since I haven't worked with them much with indoor shots and night shots.
