6D Price

so the 6D is a fullframe 60D.....

now please explain why it costs twice as much.

a GPS tracker can be bought for 19 euro.
mainboards with WIFI can be bought for 40 euro.

so GPS and WIFI chips seem to cost next to nothing.

so why does this camera cost twice as much as it´s APS-C sibbling.
and NO i dont think the sensor costs 1000 euro more.....

magnesium alloy? i don´t think that can justify the price difference either.

Is that really it for Canon at Photokina 2012?

The 6D and the annual Powershot updates? Surely there must be something more, how about lenses? I would have thought that we'd at least have seen a few more lens prototypes: EOS-M; a (cheaper than the 24-105L) kit lens for the 6D; 14-24 f/2.8L?

To be fair, Nikon have been a bit quiet too (D600 aside); it seems that the 'big two' have left the field to the competition.

Cost breakdown of a lens EF & EF-S

I have been thinking about asking this for some time.

With the discussions about EF-S, M and Kit, Standard and L-Grade lenses i can't help but thinking what it actually cost to make a lens.

Some call it tear down, some COGS some...... Product Development is also a factor

Obviously material, volume and cost of production equipment matters a lot - written off over 8-10 years, but does someone actually know why a lens like the new 24-70 Mk II should cost 2.300 €/$/GBP versus the EF-S 17-55 ~1100 €$/GBP? are they really that far appart in cost?

7DII feature requests...

There is another CR thread which is hammering the 180th sync speed of the new 6D. Plenty of photographers don't care one way or the other, and others place a high value on fast sync speeds. Yes, HSS is an option, but often at such reduced power output to render it of little useful value.

Which brings me to the 7DII wishlist. (Yes I know a 7DII may never happen, but let's run with this...)
The smaller APS-C sensor makes it a simpler matter to manufacture a shutter with a higher sync speed.
Remember the 500th sync on the original 1D? It was a flawed camera in many ways, but that fast sync speed rocked.

Listen up Canon DSLR R&D team! How about genuine 500th sync for the 7DII? I'll personally visit Japan and give each one of you a big hug.

What do you want to see on a 7DII?

With the release of the new 5D3 and Canon 6D i sow many of the forum users commenting pro/against the camera expressing their opinions about the cameras like their '' living/income depends of those camera bodies'',....

So my question is very simple: How many of us are making money out of photography ???

I will start; my income percentage that i make out of photography is over 50%. At this moment i still have a regular job ( but not for a long time ::) )

A fair answer will be highly appreciated.

Infrared reflectivity

Not really a photography question but I know there's a few optical wizards about so thought I'd post away :). I'm working on a system that uses a 850 +/- 10 nm infrared photodiode and what I'd like is an easy way to bench test the device. It'll be illuminated and if it worked in the visible range I'd use black, 50% grey and white cards to test it with, it doesn't have to be very precise just a way to take a few readings across the range of realistic readings, as opposed to putting in an enclosure or pointing at a mirror.

Because the filters on infrared remote controls are visibily dark and farily transparent to IR but designed to block visible light I know the rules of play are quite a bit different at that wavelength. I wondered if anyone had ideas on materials to use or maybe some reference to a database of how reflective various materials are at various wavelengths?

5D 1DX joystick problem with sports

5D MK lll autofocus impresses me, and I can get by with a 6 FPS motor drive for action.
What drives me crazy, and is a serious problem when shooting sports, is the function of the joystick and autofocus selection.

On my old 1D MK ll bodies programming a home setting for AF was easy and reliable. Whenever I hit the home button AF would return to the center sensor every time. The 5D MK lll, and 1 DX I presume, can't do that. Pressing the joystick in switches AF to the home setting ( the center for me ) only every other time. It alternates between "home" and previous AF positions.

When I press the joystick in or bump it by mistake I never know what AF sensor will be selected and it tends to move all over the place and is a disaster for shooting sports. While struggling with the camera while shooting football for my newspaper I couldn't help wondering how photographers successfully covered the Olympics with the 1Dx ( or 5D )

How is everyone dealing with the unreliable joystick performance for critical action photography ?

24L II or 24-70 II ??

I'm torn. I love my primes. I love low light and bokeh, but I also like having that one walk-around lens that does a little of everything. With a new 5DIII on the way, I'm losing the 15-85 EF-S lens. I have a 28mm 1.8, which will show its weaknesses on the 5DIII, I'm afraid. I have a 50mm, a 135L, and a 200L. No zoom lens.

I feel like pulling the trigger on the 24L II, but I worry I'll be swapping lenses all the time or never having what I need with me. Will I be okay with a "boring" 2.8 lens? Should I be thinking about the 24-70 II and 70-200 II combo?

I need help. I know there's no "right" solution and that it's all based on tastes, but I'm swayable. So sway me!

24-70 II

Wow, just saw some RAW samples taken on the wide end, stopped down, testing landscape-type performance. And wow they looked good. Never seen any zoom ever deliver that on FF before, well at least not any wide or standard range zoom (some of the 70-200 and 70-300 type zooms have been pretty amazing for some time).

While canon sensor division sleeps and their body division largely stumbles and milks (other than putting 1DX AF into 5D3 which was genius) their lens division carries on as always, charging ahead, hitting new performance marks, always innovating. Looks like they did deliver the best standard zoom ever (maybe there is so esoteric brand or scientific something but ignoring that stuff)! Wow, really impressive looking, looked sharp to the extreme edges and even extreme corners looked very solid. Yes, stopped down, but try that at 24mm or 28mm on any other zoom on a FF and you get mush to one degree or another.

Canon has really been on a roll recently with one amazing lens after another.
Well done.

General opinion seems to be that the 6d is too little, too late. In my opinion Canon should at least have added all the latest gimmicks of the rebels like af with all cross-points, swivel/touch-screen and build-in flash to make it a "ff rebel" - but they fell even short of that.

So what's your opinion, what's missing from the 6d that prevents you from buying it? Please tick only the features you really expect at $2000+, the 6d obviously cannot be a just a cheaper 5d3.

Btw: if I've forgotten something I can still add it to the list.

Which to get: 50mm f/1.8 or 35mm f/2?

Hi all.

Ive got a 60D with the new STM 18-135 lens.

Im looking for a prime lens. I cant spend a ton of money at this point as id still consider myself an amateur but I want to have something in this range to work with. I would consider upgrading later on if I find that I've outgrown my equipment. Im not looking for an expensive lens for right now.

Thoughts on which lens is better for me?

thanks team!

Suggestions for Testing a New Camera

My new Mark III arrived today. I'm a relative beginner so I want to have someone knowledgeable test the camera or have some clue how to test it to make sure there's not some defect from the start. Can anyone suggest things I should have tested? Will probably try myself then take it to the camera store for a double check. Very very excited! Thanks in advance for your help.

What to do?

This is really more or less for fun as I am pretty sure what I am going to do.

New 5diii delivered today courtesy of the adorama eBay sale, thanks guys! This leaves me in a pickle, I have no standard zoom for FF and $2500 burning a hole in my pocket.

So 24-70 ii, or 24-105 and 135 L?

Current FF compatible kit is, 28 1.8, 50 1.8, 70-200 f4 is. Suggestions are welcome.

New Canon EOS-M

Hello everyone,

Just had a rather interesting day spent with a couple of the Canon reps.. Basically iv got to play with the new EOS-M.. Build quality is very good, it has a touch screen which is pretty much the same as a iPhone ( very good even tho I strongly dislike touch screens on cameras ).. The only downside to today was I wasn't able to try it with either the standard kit lens or with the EF adaptor.. Ill uploaded some pics.. If you have any questions just ask..

Update.. For some reason I cant upload the images to Canon Rumors so Ill add them to my flickr

Adorama or BH

Any one with a crystal ball who might be able to guess which of these fine vendors would most likely have more chance of getting the new 24-70 for a NEW order? I am shipping some freight from the USA in the next couple of months and thus would be worth ordering it at the same time since stock is scarce in EU+land in any case... I can wait (enough not to pay silly premiums on eBay).

I had thought about preordering on both sites, but I guess my luck means I would win two on the same day and be too late to cancel the other :) And then my card would have a nice bonfire ..

sony and hasselblad

canon goes down the drain with mediocre products while sony forges alliances....

fuji, olympus as it seems and now hasselblad:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/09/18/sony-and-hasselblad-announce-partnership-dslr

sorry to say it.... but i see canon losing a lot of ground in the long run, with their current "strategy".

unexciting cameras for the masses + expensive glas.

i know a lot of my friend holding back in canon investment because they don´t know how commited canon is to the serious amateur.

and to be honest i don´t know what to think either....

Were EF-S lenses a bad idea?

A Canon APS-C user who want to upgrade to a 6D cannot use his APS-C lenses on his new camera. In contrast, a Nikon APS-C user who wants to upgrade to a D600 can use his DX lenses on his new camera and the camera uses some sort of sensor cropping to emulate DX, at about 10.7MP. Interestingly, third party lenses (i.e., Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc.) can be mounted on Canon FF bodies but those bodies have no way or recognizing them as not being FF lenses.

Do suppose Canon regrets introducing the entire EF-S lens concept?

<p><strong>Magic Lantern on the EOS 7D?

</strong>Yes, that’s true. Our young team member g3gg0 did the impossible, and solved the 7D puzzle within days of receiving the camera from Trammell Hudson (on September 12).</p>
<p><strong>Background:</strong> Trammell Hudson started to port Magic Lantern on 7D three years ago. While he was able to run user code using the firmware update procedure, he was not able to run it in parallel with Canon firmware – which was required for Magic Lantern to run as an add-on software, without replacing the main firmware. Since then, we had little or no idea about how to solve this puzzle, until last week, when g3gg0 had an Aha! moment and discovered how to load Canon firmware from autoexec.bin code.</p>
<p>The first analysis shows that porting is straightforward (more or less), and most features will work without major code changes, as Magic Lantern does not have to run on both DIGIC processors. Basic features such as zebra and focus peaking are already working, so you may expect an alpha version to be available soon.</p>
<p>Are there any of you still interested in a Magic Lantern port for the 7D? Please let us know by supporting our work!</p>
