Enough Full Frame Talk: Where are the 7D II Rumors?

Tongue in cheek, yes...but now that we've dispensed with the entry-level full frame camera, how about something I care about – the 7DII.

Anyone looking at the features of the 6D can see it pretty much guarantees that Canon has no intention of dropping the 7D. So, trying to be realistic here: what features do you expect/hope to see in the 7D?

My list is short: Less noise at ISO 1600-6400; an even better autofocus; a little more weatherproofing; CF Card slot (don't care if they also include an SD, but I wants my CF); and that ability to control the camera through your smartphone using WiFi.

Give me that, and I'll call it good. Bonus points for a touchscreen interface (know this isn't popular with the Luddites, but I find the current menu/click wheel system painfully slow and not intuitive. I presume Canon would keep the click wheels, but give users the option to control the setting from the touch screen as well. It's no longer new technology – we are on the iPhone 5 for God's sake)

Sadly, I expect the infrared pop up flash controller to disappear as Canon tries to move everyone to the next generation of Speedlites.

They can leave the swivel-screen and the new on-sensor autofocus to the 70D as far as I'm concerned, but I'm not going to pitch a fit if one or both show up.

What makes your short list?

6D Smart Phone control

For those who haven't seen it:

http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_SLR/eos_remote.aspx

Some pretty cool highlights (note the screencaps list 7D showing that this application is compatible with any wifi-enabled body).

 • Control over WiFi - no cables needed (unlike Magic Lantern and DSLR Controller)
 • Full live-view remote shooting capabilities (aperture, shutter, ISO, focus)
 • Rate, delete, sort and view from phone without exposing body
 • Save image to phone, or send as e-mail from body (WiFi/4G tether?)

Possibilities:

Switching to RAW+Jpeg for a wedding shoot to allow bride/groom to instantly share classic "Kiss" or "Cake cutting" photos on FB with status change straight from phones.

E-mailing editors (small publications w/o photo editors) keeper Jpegs on-site for slideshows or low-res accompany pics.

Instagram x over 9,000.

Remote triggering for wildlife or truly candid photography (maybe over IP). The site indicates that the app:

allows connection via access points (infrastructure), but even in environments without access points, it can be used if you have just a camera and a smartphone.

That seems to indicate you can control over IP, which would be awesome. With DLNA support and the liveview streamable over WiFI, might live streaming high quality video also be possible?

Thoughts? (My first: is this in the wrong forum? It's tied to the 6D for now so I thought it logical to describe it as a feature of the body)

Recommendations for reading / learning Color Correction/Grading?

Hi all,

I've recently downloaded and installed Davinci Resolve Lite. I'm trying to teach myself color correction and grading for using on content coming from my 5D3...

Does anyone have any recommendations on a couple of good books or sites out there?

Also, is anyone here using any particular 'flat' setting for shooting video on their 5D2's and 5D3's? If so...what's your favorite? I was thinking of trying to find those simple settings for flat in camera I'd read awhile back (cant' find the link)...but was just the one you could set, not the cinema ones put out by technicolor...

But anyway, not finding a lot on youtube for the new Resolve 9 Lite, nor really ingeneral about color correction and grading....using curves, doing this or that for contrast....'looks'....etc.

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

Sigma Announces Three New Lenses: 35 f/1.4, 17-70 f/2.8-4.0 OS & 120-300 f/2.8 OS

http://photorumors.com/2012/09/17/sigma-17-70mm-f2-8-4-macro-35mm-f1-4-and-120-300mm-f2-8-lenses-announced/comment-page-1/#comment-125105

Sigma do listen!

if it perform similar to their 50mm, and 85mm, filter size 77mm or lower, price lower than 85mm, sounds like we have a good alternative for the 35L, Nikkor and Zeiss.

I realize 50mm is the cheapest to make, the 85mm is around 1k. hopefully this could be in the 700 range?

Protests halt Canon production in China

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/17/canon-and-panasonic-china-protests/

Canon could be facing a costly drop in production of both its digital cameras and laser printers, following reports that widespread protests in China have forced it close most of its factories in that country. It's a similar story at Panasonic, which is said to have had one of its plants "sabotaged" by Chinese workers. The anti-Japan protests concern the status of disputed islands in the East China Sea and were triggered by the Japanese government's move to purchase some of the land in question

Don't know if the main EOS plants are in China or Japan (I would guess China) but this can't be good with them just trying to ramp up 6D production.

Canon U.S.A Inc. Announces moving of Corporate Headquarters

Company will complete a move by the end of the year to the nearby town of Lake Failure

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., September 17, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that it would be moving it's corporate headquarters from Lake Success to the nearby town of Lake Failure. The move, being considered for several years under Canon's FF-6D initiative, is an effort to reduce overall operating costs for their U.S.A. division.

Lake Failure is a surprising choice for Canon as they had also considered a move to the town of Lake Nokin which many believe offers more benifits and amenities at a lower cost. One executive at Canon stated that "we know this choice is not going to make our employees very excited - but we feel that they don't really need all of the amenities in Nokin. We have a lot more experience making these types of decisions. Our employees will eventually realize that this move is the best thing for them at this time."

Family oriented employeess of Canon will be disappointed to hear that Lake Failure has 11 activity-fun (AF) parks while Nokin offers 39, 11 of which have cross park trails - Failure only offers one. Getting to these parks will also take longer as Failure's roads have lower speed capabilities than Nokin's. Canon employeess will also have to switch their toll fare provider as Failure does not support the more popular Car Fast (CF) system. One anonymous employee stated "I have been using the CF system for 10 years, now I have to put the Simple Dash (SD) system in all of my cars. Will I be reimbursed for this cost - certainly not!"

Lake Failure does provide Canon with Wi-Fi access throughout the town but many residents complain that the speed of the system makes it irrelevent for most tasks. Ken Blockwell, a long-time resident of Nokin says that he understands why Canon employees would be upset. "Nokin has always been a better place to live. And believe me I know, because I know everything."

The move is slated to be complete by December 2012 but Canon has acknowledged that it will review it's decision 12-18 months from now.

6D max shutter speed, 1/4000 or 8000 ???

so all rumor site shown this 6D with 1/8000 shutter speed, but official Canon website says 1/4000

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/professional/products/professional_cameras/digital_slr_cameras/eos_6d#Specifications

this could be a deal breaker for somebody, but the D600 offer the same, i would be surprise with 1/4000.

also this image also shown 1/4000, usually product pic like this shown the maximum capability? like max battery levle, Wifi on, GPS on, highest ISO, etc.

The killer feature for 6D is...

Has anyone spied this little pearl?

http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_SLR/eos_remote.aspx

As it appears:

1) Proof your shots on your phone without syncing, card readers, laptop boot, etc. -- seems Apple PhotoStream-like. Solid feature.
2) Use it as a basic remote shutter release. Nice, I guess.
3) Use your phone for Live View when the camera is in a tough position, direct sunlight, etc. I'm sure they nerfed the true functionality of LV, but I am stunned that Canon, the slow moving technology juggernaut, is trying it at all. This is a leadership / first-ever move, isn't it? (I've seen hacks of this, but never a first party offering.)

As a 5D3 owner, I am now somewhat (remotely) jealous. Not of the IQ or horsepower of the 6D, but of this very useful looking functionality. I do not see any commentary that coupling the 5D3 with a wifi transmitter will work with this app. Sadness.

All of this could be toxic for battery life (of your camera and phone), so it's not necessarily a good thing all around.

Other than this feature, I find the 6D to be a seriously nerfed FF camera, particularly with the unimpressive AF offering and button rearranging for size reasons. But this wifi / cloud-ish / Live View functionality is potentially super handy. Hats off to Canon, but please let me do this on my 5D3 with a firmware update + WiFi transmitter.

Pleasepleaseplease don't riff on 'technology marches on' and 'buyer's remorse is endemic with technology', I am well aware as a long time Apple guy. I just find it odd that something that could be tremendously useful for higher-end camera owners is only an 'entry-level' option. One would think -- even though it would need to be a klugy transmitter option -- that this gap should be rectified, right?

I welcome the forum's thoughts on this.

Best 5dIII (or 1DX) focus config for catwalk fashion?

I'm going to a Canon/Calumet promo evening at the London Fashion Week, where I get the chance to shoot a couple of catwalk shows ... what would you recommend for the autofocus configuration? I'm imagining that I'll shoot in AI Servo mode with a combination of:

Either: Zone AF ( keep sharpness on the nearest subject) or
Automatic AF point selection (use the entire 61-point AF area)

Either: AF Configuration: Case 2 (Continue to track subjects, ignoring possible obstacles)
or Case 3 (Instantly focus on subjects suddenly entering AF Points)

AI Servo 1st image priority: Focus Priority
AI Servo 2nd image priority: Equal Priority

As far as lenses go, I imagine a 70-200mm will be first choice, and I'll probably take a second body with a 24-70mm for any wider opportunities ...

All advice gratefully received :) I'll be using 5D3 bodies, but I believe the configuration options are the same on the 1DX

Canon 6D vs 5d mark ii

I currently own a canon 60d, but I have wanted to upgrade to fullframe for a long time now.

It was the plan to upgrade to the canon 5d mark ii very soon, but with the announcement of the canon 6d, I started to think if it would be a better idea to wait and buy that one?

I know that the canon 6d hasn't been released yet, but how to you think it will compare to the 5d mark ii, in terms of iso, AF, image quality etc?

Should I just go for the 5d mark ii now or wait for the 6d?

Thanks in advance

The 5D Mark II

Mitch at Planet5D reminded us that today marks the 4th anniversary of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, quite possibly the most important and successful DSLR Canon or anyone else has ever released. We already know it changed the video world forever, but it also changed the still photography world. How many people do you know that the 5D Mark II was their first DSLR? I used to work in retail and saw it a lot.

Do you remember the first time you saw “Reverie“? I do, I was floored. I think the entire world’s mouth was collectively open in awe.

Sales wise, I remember a huge retailer in Canada telling me that in 2009 the 5D Mark II was 25% of their TOTAL revenue for the year. Canon sold so many of these cameras, and they continue to sell today… 4 years on!

The 5D Mark II was also my first big camera launch here at Canon Rumors, and I completely blew it! I was away in Niagara Falls with my inlaws from Ireland and ignored the site on launch night. It was my first lesson in how crazy us photogeeks are, I haven’t missed a launch since. :)

Happy anniversary to a wonderful photographic and videography tool, and I suspect people will still be using you for years to come.

LONG LIVE THE 5D MARK II!

Which lenses to start?

I just bought a 5D Mark III. Switched from Nikon but just had kit lenses I'm going to invest in one expensive lens -- 70-200 USM II... What else would you get? Will probably buy one more to start (50 mm 1.4? 24-105?) then a third. What would you choose for the walk-around lens (i.e. take pictures in the backyard etc)?

I will primarily take photos of children and people. Want to make sure I can get good bokeh. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

I really need help

I have used a 5D for some years and NEVER had focusing issues. I now have a Mark III and my focusing is near to non existant both in manual and auto! It does focus but it is not consistant, I can't put my finger on the problem (pardon the pun). My subjucts are nearly always stationary so I have it set on one shot.

The Digital Picture resolution tests are up for the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II

The Digital Picture resolution tests were posted yesterday. Obviously results are good, but not quite as good as the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II.

Also according to the tests, the results of the lens deteriorate significantly at 70mm. They appear to be worse than the old EF 24-70 f/2.8L at that focal length.

6D Sensor... why?

can someone explain why the 6D has a new developed 20.2 MP sensor?

i mean, im tottaly puzzled why a new sensor?

if it would be a hybrid sensor.. ok.... but it´s not.
so why making another sensor an not using the 5D MK3 sensor?

i mean, it has to be more expensive to R&D yet another FF sensor then using and producing a existing sensor?
