RRS plate and Z-Finder Pro 3x optical view finder...

or any other optical view fined for that matter...

Hi guys, I was just wondering if any of you are using Really Right Stuff plate on your camera with Zacuto Z-Finder Pro.... Obviously mounting hole is in different spot (on my 20D RRS plate) and I assume it is not going to be any different on new 1Dx plate that is still on back order for me.

Is it still possible to use Z-Finder Pro with slightly different mounting hole location? What other view finders are popular/good on the market.

Please advise...

Thanks Charles

My first attempt at stop action (hummingbirds)

So I grabbed my 7D mounted with a 70-200 f/4 IS and sat on stool on my sister's deck and waited for something to visit her feeders. She mentioned that hummingbird's frequented them several times a day.

I didn't have much faith that I was going to see one and if I did that the photos would turn out any good. Well, sure enough one visited after only about 20 minutes. I took five photos. Here are three that I was pretty happy with. I know the composition isn't the greatest, but I think I did a pretty good job at freezing the action in two of them.

They are really pretty birds, aren't they?

OUT: DSLR // IN: Micro 4/3

I'm trying to find a reason NOT to do this:

Sell: 5D2, TS-E 24/3.5L II, 24-105/4L, 40/2.8
Buy: Oly OM-D, Oly 12/2, Pan/Leica 25/1.4, Oly 75/1.8

Size, weight, price and general flexibility seem to outweigh the advantages of an all-out DSLR system. I'm finding you have to dig pretty deep to find significant differences in IQ in practical use. Has anyone made this kind of change?

Qualifier: I'm not a full-time pro. I don't make my living in photography. It's only a small part of my job, but it's a huge part of my life. I shoot for the enjoyment of shooting: typically landscapes, nature, travel and cityscapes.

review the 5D3 reviews

sorry if this has already been hashed -- feel free to point to those threads. Whats your vote for the most objective and useful 5D3 review, and which reviews do you find less useful than others?

For example, in reading the dpreview piece, I came away wondering why the in-camera jpg conversion was given so much attention as a negative, or "con". Generally I wouldn't expect users of a $3500 camera body to depend that much on in-camera jpg conversion, but maybe its just me -- it doesn't seem all that critical to me: Interesting and important to know, to be sure, but just not critical.

I used to shoot raw+jpg, using the jpgs as proofs and to help me identify the keepers but then I discovered the CR2 conversion plug-in for Windows Photo Viewer and now I don't depend on my camera to produce jpgs at all.

Audio on 5D Mark III - noisy in-camera pre-amp?

It seems that the 5D3's pre-amp can be quite noisy, at least when combined with my Beachtek DSA-XLR pre-amp. So, I sat down to try to see how to get the best results.

Here's a video I made of my tests. https://vimeo.com/47819373

The solution seems to be to set the 5D3's pre-amp as low as possible using the manual audio (microphone) controls. At zero, the audio is off. So, I set it to +1 click above off. To get a signal, though, I had to use the headphone out on my Beachtek, rather than the line out. The apparent (I don't know how to test this technically) signal-to-noise ratio defintely seems good, or at least better, in this configuration.

To get the same signal using the line out (rather than headphone out) on the Beachtek, I had to have the 5D3 set to about +1 or +2 clicks above center (50%). As you see (or hear) in the video, the pre-amp noise is really high at that setting.

Oddly, the pre-amp noise gets WORSE as you lower the manual control from +2 to +1 clicks above center.

My takeaway is to use as low a 5D3 audio setting as possible. However, I wonder if the unconventional headphone out from the Beachtek could cause problems that I haven't thought of or that don't show up (or sound off) in this test.

Any thoughts? Experiences? Suggestions for a better configuration?

Chuck westfall on the sharpness of the 5dm3

Here is a video addressing firmware but also a few questioned asked by planet 5d.

One thing I thought interesting was that Chuck says in response to a question about the sharpness of the 5dm3 that a lot of data would be lost if the images were sharper because they are able to collect more data from an image without excessively sharp images and after adding sharpening later it sharpens up much nicer having more data. That was my take on what was said.

Canon 1D MKIV VS 1DX Cameras

At the moment,I own a 1D MKIV and I am tempted and debating of upgrading to to the 1DX camera.Anyway,if I mainly shoot sports, would it be worth it to upgrade from the Canon 1D MKIV to the 1DX?Would I miss the reach factor a lot of 1D MKIV if I switched to the 1DX?How much bettter is the IQ of 1DX than that of the 1D MKIV and is there a big difference?I heard that the AF of 1DX is better than the 1D MKIV in low light shooting. How about in brighter light, how do both cameras AF and IQ compare to each other? And lastly,In what other areas is the 1DX better than the 1D MKIV?
Thanks a in advance.

new to portrait photography - any feed back would be great

So this weekend I had the opportunity to shoot some outdoor portraits. I'm fairly new to this and was wondering what everyone thinks. Any criticism, constructive or not, is greatly appreciated, whether it's composition, post processing, anything really. This is my first time shooting portrait using real amateur models.

All images were either shot with a 85mm f/1.8 or 100mm f/2.8L Macro w/ Canon 7D. The 85mm images were shot using a reflector, from 9am-Noon. The 100mm f/2.8L images were shot from 4pm-7:30pm with no reflector.

When processing the images, my philosophy was less is more. I tried to keep it as 'real' as possible without overdoing the vibrant/saturation.

A Canon NEX-VG20?

So, for those that aren't aware, the NEX-VG10 was a camera developed by Sony with the idea in mind, to get a DSLR style camera into a video body.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/818266-REG/Sony_NEXVG20_NEX_VG20_Interchangeable_Lens_HD.html
And I personally think that it's a great idea. You basically get the brain of a DSLR, and tack on a Mic, mobileLCD, and buttons to fit a camcorder, and voila!
It goes into the prosumer category, lightweight, ready for narratives or documentary style films, for a pretty low budget and no need to expand into rigs and mics.
An easier way to visualize it, is to imagine the canon camcorder with interchangeable lens.

Now why hasn't canon caught up to this, is my question?
It would be a great entry level camera for up coming filmarkers, get consumers caught with using canon lens (teehee), but at the same time offering a true DSLR like camera that doesn't require the whole need of body's and mics, or external recorders...
Thing is, Sony kinda sucked at developing the NEX-VG10 at first. It wasn't well though out, but I think canon could pretty much pull it off.

What are you thoughts on the idea?
And why hasn't canon got into this 'new' market yet?

The 7D Mark II a go?

Below is a purported spec list for an upcoming EOS 7D Mark II.

Specifications

24MP – an all new sensor with phase AF on chip and noticeably lower noise than the current 18MP.

1Dx/5D3 based AF system.

10 FPS.

ISO 100-25600.

High speed video, with still capture.

Improved durability and sealing.

Available this year.

I tend to agree with the source, I am not convinced such a camera is on the horizon. We’ve heard for a while that the 70D would move up a level and the 7D would be left alone. With the recent major firmware update for the 7D, replacing the camera directly this soon seems like a stretch.
