Swimming

Hi there. Seems that there isn't a general thread for swimming yet, so I thought, I'll open one.

Recently I took some pictures at a swimming-event not far from where I live, using my 550D and the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 II most of the time. Here are two of them, I would welcome any comments about them or about the full set at http://www.flickr.com/photos/80270150@N06/sets/72157630346283722/with/7456405328/ .

After this event, I got my 5DIII, and of course I had to try it out, all shots with the 70-200 - and I was really amazed by the number of keepers, more than 73% as compared to around 40% with the 550D. Unfortunately, this time it was not possible to get to the start-area, so no close-ups and no shots from the front :(

The full set is here http://www.flickr.com/photos/80270150@N06/sets/72157630448907988/with/7514453640/ , and two samples from it:

The only post-processing I did, was to use the lens-profile in Lightroom and of course do some cropping.

Quality gap 5DIII?

The institution I am working at, bought some 5DIII in the last weeks. There seems to be still an quality gap between the cameras itself. Our photographers took sample pictures to get used of the camera.
There is an highly visible difference in the quality of the pictures (noise, grain), they took with each of the MKIIIs.
Two of them went back to the selling company, 2 cameras will not be exchanged, although there is big noise >800 ISO. >:(
The MKIII is no 500€ model! Our photographer are upset about this quality gap!
Why is Canon no able to produce Cameras at an constant high quality level?

But how to prevent getting an low quality MKIII an an private user?

The 600EX-RT Wireless Sync with the 5D MKIII?

So I wish I wasn't asking this, I consider myself smart enough to figure it all out with just the Manual or a quick Google search. However, this has really got me stumped.

Do I need a Remote Flash Control Transmitter such as the ST-E3-RT to wirelessly sync with the 600EX through Radio Transmission? Or is that not required at all? If not then how do I connect the 600EX with the MKIII Wirelessly? Preferably Radio Trans first then Optical second.

This will be my First Speedlite, I've only ever had a built-in in my last Camera.

Also, Is it a Master Unit only when it's directly attached to the Camera, or can it be Wirelessly connected & still be the Master?

Thanks in advance for any help guys, thanks a bunch.

60D vs. 650D

I know that this has been one of the biggest debates since the 650D came out, but I haven't seemed to find any definitive answers.
From a film standpoint, is the 60D still the better camera? Or has the new technology of the 650D outdone the 60D?

For context, I personally make short films and vlogs. This will be my first DSLR.

Your opinions? :)

Buying 70-300mm L whilst working in USA

In September I will be working in Chicago and would like to take the opportunity to purchase a 70-300mm L-series lens for somewhat less than the US$ 1,700+ that it would cost me here in the UK.

Whilst I know that the USA has State taxes, I have no idea how they are set or when "tax free" might apply if I purchase in a State other than Illinois and have it shipped to the latter for me to collect.

Practical advice would be much appreciated, thank you!

Need critique please

So, I'm not generally a landscape person, but I saw an opportunity for when I was at my cousin's Bar Mitzvah recently to get a nice shot which could be a cover, or serve the Temple as a website photo or something. Since I live 3000 miles away re shooting is not an option, so please critique my processing. And any tips for future shots are appreciated, but please keep it simple, something I can just remember and not something involving lots of equipment or specialized landscape stuff.

Semi-candid portrait

So, here's a sorta candid portrait of my cousin at my other cousin's Bar Mitzvah recently. Curious to see what you think of my processing. Both were done completely in Lightroom 4.1, although in the 2nd I'd have like to have gotten a bit better B&W conversion. I basically just did a brush with -100 saturation, and a few other lighting tweaks. Please be as harsh as you feel like, but constructive comments will be most appreciated :)

Canon 50D vs 7D

I currently own

Canon 50D
Canon 70-300L is
Sigma 17-50 2.8
Canon 50 1.8
Canon 580 EX II

I am thinking of upgrading to a Canon 7D. Part of the reason is for the much better focusing system for action shots of wildlife.

I am also wondering if there will be any significant improvement in ISO performance from the 50D, or would a better option would be to invest in glass.

Thank you for any advice.

How to proceed?

I am very satisfied with my 60D, but I want to go full frame.

I want the (relative) best picture quality, and while my five lenses 15mm Fisheye, 24mm 1.4L, FD 55mm 1.2 converted to EF mount, 100L Macro and a 200 2.8L (with a 1.4 TC) can/could give me that quality, the 60D can't.

I am shooting a lot of people, as well as getting more and more into landscapes, I am discovering macro photography, doing a fair amount of street photography. Very rarely animals and where it's possible, architecture.

On my lens wishlist remains the 135mm 2L and probably also a Sigma 85mm 1.4. More forward in the future I would like to trade my old Canon Fisheye with the new one, get a TS-E 17mm, and if I feel I could need it, get the 70-200 2.8L II as well.

However, I make no money with my photography, so I have to think twice if I want to spend a bigger amount for a new camera. I was thinking a lot about getting the 5D Mark II used for 1500$, but I don't know if I would be satisfied with the camera. It's getting old and it's still expensive for my taste.

The 5D Mark III? Sure I could buy it, and I am sure I would love it, but 3300$ for a new camera? I don't know. For this I could get the two before mentioned wishlist lenses (~1600$) and as well trade the fisheye (~450$) and still have a spare 1300$ for, well, traveling ;-). The TS-E 17mm is only a option with a full frame camera. Although I would need higher ISO (a major thing I don't like about the 60D) for shooting f/4 with the 8-15mm Fisheye, as I prefer to shooting during the blue hour(s), and also at night. As well, what meaning has it to get a 8-15mm on a crop?

What did I forgot to mention? I like my gear light (but not all the time), sometimes just mounting one lens on the camera and use this combo all day/on a trip. If I feel like not carrying anything heavy with me, I take my Fuji X100 only.

Soo, If you read all above, you may think, WTF just go outside and shoot some pictures. That's what I am telling myself, and I know I thought a bit too much about my gear future, and anyway, my current path is to shoot the 60D to death and then I will have to get a new camera. 8)

But still, I am curious about your opinion! Am I in some dead end with my gear thoughts, and where is the way out? Or should I just get the 5DIII and enjoy my 5 prime lenses even more? What would you do? Thank you for your answer.

PS Some of you may think, this is a get a new camera or buy more lenses matter, but I would like to improve my photography on all levels, and currently I feel like my camera is the limiting factor (besides taking the time for photography at all).

Old Nikon Lenses with Adaptor

So I often hear people talk about using old Nikon lenses on a Canon with an adapter. I never actually see what lenses they use it with though and what they are comparable to performance wise of a current Canon lens. Is this one of those urban myths or can you actually get a nicer picture for less money going this way? I realize the limitations and so of course that has to be factored in but if we're just talking strictly image quality is this a good option?

Multiple Flashes During Wedding Ceremony

I currently shoot with a single 430 or 580 flash during wedding ceremony's. For the stuff closer up where I can bounce it up it's pretty decent but for longer distance shots where I have it running straight through a gary fong lightsphere to soften it up some but still straight at them it's not as nice an effect. I've been thinking of getting a third flash (we shoot with 2 cameras) and I'm wondering if it would be weird to have another slave flash off camera just bringing up the ambient light in the room or if that's too distracting. Anybody have thoughts on this or done something like that before?

What Lens to use/get for shooting bands, mini performances...

Hi All,

I was wondering if any of you have any experiences or suggestions on which lenses to use for shooting bands while they perform mini performances (mostly indoors). I never shot in this situation. Quite frankly I really don't have much shooting experiences. I've shot in baby showers, a couple of weddings (but not as the paid prof, rather as an 'unofficial' assistant as I'm the friend of the BG), and informal events. But recently I've been approach to assist in shooting a friend's band (might not be a one time thing). Thanks for your advice in advance. Thanks!

MODIFIED: I apologize for failing to state I have a 5D Mark II and have only 2 lenses: 24-105L & 50 1.8 II. I am thinking on getting a new lens, thus asking for suggestions.

New Upgraders (to FF) - what is your experience

With all the cheap FF chatter I really started to think about upgrading from my crop sensor (T2i). However, being somewhat of a long time reader on these forums, I am well aware that waiting for a rumoured product can be futile.

So the question:
5DIII is out for me (price), and with many still thinking highly of the the II, I was hoping to get some honest feedback of newly upgraded users of the 5D II - as this cam is coming down nicely in price (used). I understand the advantages of FF, thats why I am considering upgrading, but I want to get a feeling about frustrations/concerns, my main ones being:

> Weight - The II and the 24-105 L will probably be my 90% combo. So when travelling and lugging this around the whole day (BlackRapid strap) what are those ex-crop users feeling about managing the extra weight and did this cam make a big difference in their normal family style travel photos?
> Flash - I love using the built in flash for fill. It sometimes just needed. Again when travelling and the light just demands you filling in those faces. SO, new upgraders, do you sometimes get frustrated that the mark II doesn't have a built in flash?

I know about that there are many many satisfied users of the II out there, but I am hoping to get some honest feedback from those hobbyists/amateurs that recently upgraded from being long time crop users about their true experiences and, if any, frustrations. Personally I expect that a cheap FF to be closer to a rebel than a xD which should address my 2 main concerns, but waiting is a b*tch

5D3 macro question (Possible Noobish)

Wondering if someone can help me here, I have only had my 5d3 for about three weeks. I tried to do a few macro shots today, (Close ups of flowers) using the kit lens.

Autofocus was spot on looking through the view finder but I could not get the camera to take the picture, nothing happened when pushing shutter. If I dropped to manual focus on lens or zoomed further out it worked fine. I haven't done much Macro before, is there something I am missing?

Or was the camera telling me I was too close even though it looked ok?

amazon cancelled my t4i 18-135mm kit order and now no t4i's can be found there

Just wanted to get this out there. My T4i 18-135mm pre-order just got cancelled by Amazon. On top of that, they sent me an email from their "Amazon Product Safety Team" stating that "We have recently learned that Canon USA is voluntarily recalling the EOS REBEL T4i Digital SLR camera."

From what I knew only the bodies with a "1" in the fourth or fifth number from the left of the serial were affected. However, I can't find *any* T4i stuff on Amazon now. No bodies. No kits. No nothing.

Anyone else seeing this?

Canon 1DX video overview and links to other reviews

I have been browsing around for more 1DX samples just to get an idea of what to expect with high ISO settings and dynamic range but I'm rather disappointed with the number of people who have claimed to have received the 1DX and haven't posted a single photo. Yeah I know you have your fancy new toy and are probably busy playing with it but when you get the time, remember those of us who are still waiting for our bodies and post a shot to show how well it handles skin tones and such.

While browsing Google I found a youtube video from Borrowlenses.com which gives a decent overview of the 1DX. They even do some comparisons with the 5D3 at high ISOs which was nice of them. Some AI Servo tracking comparisons would be killer if anyone out there has both cameras.

Focus On Canon EOS 1D X

Here are some other reviews and previews I have found. They aren't very in-depth, nor do they have a ton of samples (if any) but it's all we have for the moment.
