First shots with 600 4/IS MkII

Good evening (Danish time)

I happily received my new Canon EF 600 mm 4/IS II the other day from AC Foto in Germany (fantastic service from them - I can't recommend this shop enough fro European customers).
As the moon is full tonight, I decided to put up the new lens with my 1D Mk4 body and a Canon 2x MkIII converter on a Gimbal head.
Here is the best shot, with which I'm quite happy.
It is a 100% crop converted from a RAWfile and edited slightly in Photshop CS5: 1/250 - f/9 - ISO 400

I look forward to so many interesting times with the new beast - after having shot for 3 months with the 300 2,8/IS MkII and 2x converter.

Cheers
Thorbjørn /DK

What's on your monopod?

What, if any, head do you have on your monopod?

I'm just curious as to whether most of us use a monopod with or without a head.

I use a ball head. I had one spare. It suits my purposes, although the head weighs as much as the monopod. I'd probably be just as happy with a tilt head, rather less content with no head. Maybe that's just me.

EDIT: I didn't include a voting opinion for a gimbal head as I suspect it would be statistically insignificant!

5D3 redefining lens choices?

I'm giving somewhat serious consideration to a 5D3. Because I shoot sports, my constant struggle is to get enough light to keep the shutter speeds as high as I need them. So I've always looked for the fastest lenses I can get, with f/2.8 being the minimum. Of course with a fast moving target, when the DOF gets too thin, even the slightest miss on the AF starts to show, so it's a bit of a two-edged sword.

So the question is, with the great ISO available on the 5D3, will I start to be better friends with my 24-105L and can I consider the 17-40L (both of which are f/4.0) or should I still stick with the faster lenses?

Good, inexpensive zoom lens? Beginner here.

Too long; didn't read: what's a good, somewhat cheap, zoom lens to compliment the 40mm 2.8 pancake?

Newbie here,

Last week I got my first DSLR (t4i) with the 40mm 2.8 lens.

I don't know much about photography or lenses for that matter, and I was wondering...what zoom lens would make a good compliment to the 40mm?

I'm going to school for video, so keep that in mind. Sadly, I can only spend about $500 tops on a lens, since I spent the rest on camera gear. I wish I could get a 70-200mm :'(

I was thinking this one...anyone have any opinions on it? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/169267-GREY/Canon_6473A003AA_75_300mm_f_4_0_5_6_III_Autofocus.html

I would mainly be using it at sporting events, concerts, etc. I don't necessary need a zoom that long, either. I was also considering: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/689620-REG/Sigma_583101_17_50mm_F2_8_EX_DC.html

^but that's if you guys really convinced me. I wasn't blown away with the continuous AF with the STM lens (I'm probably just using it wrong), so I figured any focusing I'll really be doing with the t4i will be manual.

As always, thank you for the advice and enlightenment. :)

NEED HELP: SHOOTING A WEDDING...WHICH LENS SHOULD I RENT?

Hi All,

I'll 'unofficially' assist in shooting a wedding for a friend. They will have a paid-hired pro shooter at the wedding (from 1pm to end of reception, likely 11pm). However, the pro will not be there from 8:30am to 1:00
pm, so I will shoot, probably solo during this time (make ups, dress, getting ready period). I've done this once before a couple years back with a Rebel & CF lens. Currently I shoot w/a 5D Mark II and have 2 lenses: 24-105L & 50 f/1.8 II (just upgrade to the Mark II w/24-105 as kits lens 3 months ago).

My question is, SHOULD I RENT A LENS? If so, WHICH LENS should I rent?

Your input is much appreciated. Thanks!

<strong>A bit of information

</strong>With Canon’s expected foray into the mirrorless segment <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2012/06/announcement-day-july-23-2012-cr2/" target="_blank">just around the corner</a>, a bit more information has started to flow.</p>
<p><strong>Lenses

</strong>We’re told the new camera is in fact a new mount, I think most expected this. The camera will launch with at least 2 lenses and an EF adaptor. One lens will be a wide angle “kit” lens as well as a telephoto lens.</p>
<p>No word on whether or not the EF adaptor would also adapt EF-S lenses, though I would hope it did.</p>
<p>It is also suggested that the new primes that Canon has announced and released (24, 28, & 40mm) are the <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_aps-c_compact.html" target="_blank">first in a series of small prime lenses</a> meant to work well with EOS EF and the mirrorless camera.</p>
<p><strong>Body

</strong>Information about the body itself is pretty vague. It’s still suggested the camera will use the 14mp CMOS G1 X sensor. A “good” ISO range and “average” video performance. A video focused camera could be “in the future”.</p>
<p><strong>EF Lens Adaptor

</strong>We have posted a couple of patents in the past about such an adaptor. You can view them <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/03/first-canon-mirrorless-related-patent/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/07/canon-mirrorless-related-patent/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>Northlight has posted a <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_aps-c_compact.html" target="_blank">cool little diagram</a> showing the size of the EF adaptor in comparison to the new EF 40 f/2.8 pancake.</p>

<strong>July/August 2012

</strong>I am still being told by a couple of retailers that we’ll see the new EF 24-70 f/2.8L II in late July or early August. Initial stock will be pretty good, though I do expect that all initial preorders won’t be fulfilled with the first batch.</p>
<p>There is a bit of a shortage here in Canada on Canon lenses, there are lots of long running backorders. It does feel like Canon has allocated some manufacturing to the new lens(es) over the older stuff.</p>

With many people thinking about getting a 5d3 now, wait for a lower price or get a 5d2 instead if the high price of the new model persists, I thought I'd do a quick survey.

Opinions on how likely price drops are seem to be very split, so here's your chance to voice your opinion and revisit the thread at the end of 2012 for a good laugh (like "how much better will the 650d sensor be?")...

Please don't write "But I've seen it as low as xyz sold on ebay by a hk dealer", this poll is about the tendency, so specify standard u.s. shop retail prices.

FF advise (mainly stills)

Hi all,

I'm currently 450D owner and I think that after 4 years it's time to upgrade. I'm mainly shooting portraits / street / gigs / DJs / low light / strobist.

My current gear ready for FF:
I already have 3 primes: EF 28 f/1.8 USM, EF 40 f/2.8 STM and 85 /f1.8 USM. Flash: 430EX II and triggers Cactus V4 and Pixel Kings for TTL. I also have Vivitar 285HV.

My friends can borrow me EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM, EF 70-200 f/4 L USM and EF 24-70 f/2.8 L USM - so zoom is not a problem when needed.

My options:
1.) buy 5D classic - I've read a lot of posts here and there - it has a really good reputation in terms of color and image quality even nowdays. AF is old but 5D Mk II has the same so no difference - when I need I just attach 430EX II for AF assist. Really important question is: how it is at ISO 1600 and 3200 ? I'm using my 450D at 1600 and do some post to correct noise with good results. I'm fine with 12 Mpx. Also used price is around 600 Euro.

2.) buy 5D Mk II - I'm sure it's a great camera. I've shot with it on one Canon event and was pleased even with photos at ISO 3200 and ocasionally at 6400 (always depends on actual situation). I know what this cam is capable of in terms of both stills and video. AFMA is a great feature becasue I'm a prime shooter. AF same as 5D as I mentioned before. There is also a possibility to hook it with Magic Lantern. As I've said before I'm fine with 12 Mpx.

3.) buy 5D and rent 5D Mk II when needed - until 5D Mk III price drops to affordable level...or some lower specd FF body will be announced.

My preferences and question for you:
I really want to upgrade straight to 5D Mk III, but the price is ridicolous (at least now). It has all I need/want from camera. I also want to keep the new cam for at least another 4 years (so I think that buying 5D Mk II is not so wise decision - reason is obvious = price). So what I'm really looking for now is your suggestion for the best temporary setup. What do you think ?

Thanks in advance :)

600EX-RT and 5D Mark III trouble

Well I set up for radio transmission with two 600EX-RT's and put one on camera as master, and one off camera as slave. I am firing in automatic ETTL mode. I set them up, they are linked, same channel and frequency, but the master unit will not fire, only the slave unit fires. In fact, I cannot even set the master unit to fire, because the ON or OFF button just doesn't work. Where that icon goes in the LCD screen, right next to it is an exclamation point. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? I've read and reread the manual and followed all the steps and it's not working. Thanks.
