What's your favorite Canon lens and why?

I have a good selection of L lenses, and I have been fortunate to be able to try many other lenses (even strange ones, like for instance the 8-15 F4.0L and the 200 F2.0L IS (strange because in my opinion of their limited areas of use).

A little disclaimer first. I know that specific lenses are for specific uses and shooting styles.

What I am asking you to share here is what lens and why it is your favorite:)

I'll start. My favorite lens is the 135mm F2.0L. I love this lens because it is a really kind lens for an amateur like me, insofar as the resulting images are great, and the ones I have to throw away afterwards are few. I love this lens because it gives me a distance that I like to shoot portraits in given its range. I love this lens for its quality of bokeh (although I would argue that my 100mm F2.8L HIS Macro is better in this specific area). Finally I love this lens because it is the best combination of price and quality that I have seen on any canon lens.

Hoping to buy: 24-70 F2.8L II, MP-E65 (with the Macro Twin flash).

<strong>New Lenses Coming

</strong>The announcement dates for the following lenses haven’t been confirmed. However, they will be coming sooner rather than later.</p>
<p><strong>EF-S 18-135 II

</strong>This lens will have a silent autofocus motor geared to video. It will arrive with the new Rebel T4i. This has shown up in a US retailer inventory system. No price for the kit with the T4i.</p>
<p><strong>EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4X

</strong>This highly anticipated lens will be officially announced shortly. The price will most likely be $10,999 USD.</p>
<p><strong>EF 40 f/2.8 Pancake</strong>

I think it’ll be EF, but a 40 f/2.8 Pancake lens is coming. Expect it to be announced either with the 5D or shortly after.</p>

Full-time manual focus differences

Hai,

Not having touched/experimented with a very vast array of lenses yet, I'm a bit confused about "full-time manual focus". I know what it is, and what it's for; I understand its use... Still, there seem to be differences in it.

Most or all autofocus-able lenses (at least from Canon) have an auto focus / manual focus switch on the lens itself. 'Primitive' lenses (some cheap kit lenses among others) do not allow manual focussing at all as long as this switch is on "auto focus". This means that the focus ring will not turn while this switch is on "af".

Now as I understand it, for lenses with full-time manual focus, while in "af" mode and after focussing, you're able to adjust the focus by turning the ring.

The confusion that I have is what happens when I turn the focus ring on my 70-200 f/4L IS lens (my only L lens by the way), without autofocussing first. The focus changes perfectly. It's as if the lens is in manual mode; no need to focus first, you can always manually focus even without half-pressing the shutter, even with the camera off, while it's on "af" mode (even though that's useless because when half-pressing the shutter it'll first AF first again anyhow). But when I once "felt" a 135mm f/2L, the focus ring turned but did nothing unless you had autofocussed first.

So there seem to be at least two different "types" of full-time manual focus (perhaps more if counting micro USM seperately, but the two lenses mentioned above both have ring-type USM). One that will always make the focus ring focus, regardless of af/manual mode; and one that will allow manual adjustments only after focussing with AF. What is it that distinguishes these two? Is there a name for it, is it possible to see which lenses have the type of FTM that my lens has, and which have the type that the 135mm has?

<strong>March 2, 2012

</strong>We <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_5d3.html">and others</a> (again) are getting lots of hints that NDA’s will expire on March 2, 2012 and an announcement of a camera body will take place.</p>
<p>It will be a 5D type camera and the same specs as before keep coming up. 22mp, 61AF points, full frame, 6.9fps and all that.</p>
<p>If March 2, 2012 is true, we’ll get confirmation very shortly. February 28, 2012 still gets a few mentions, so perhaps something else <em><strong>may</strong></em> be announced on that date.</p>

<strong>Not shocking

</strong>We’ve heard along <a href="http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_1Dx.html">with others</a> that the Canon EOS-1D X may be delayed until April or May, 2012.</p>
<p>I don’t think anyone is too shocked by that, as I think there is a lot of software tweaking going on with the camera. I have yet to hear any issues with manufacturing.</p>

Where is 650D/t4i

Canon has released the SLR in the xxxD/Rebel-serie early every year now for the last couple of years.
But this year it’s really quiet about the 650d/T4i.
Does anyone know anything? Does the nuclear-tsunami-disaster have anything to do with it?
When can we expect the camera?

EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and DXOMARK.COM

I post this on rumors because DXO has created a rumor.

I find a test of the new EF300mmf/2.8LISIIUSM on:

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/News/DxOMark-news/A-good-if-heavy-and-expensive-lens-the-Canon-EF-300-f-2.8L-II-USM :o

Who can explain that DXO find the resolution of the old EF300mmf/4.0LISUSM is better? :)

Why Canon don't react at this point? :(

Are the FTM curve of CANON a joke? ;)

If on dxomark, you compare the EF300mmf/2.8LISIIUSM with a zoom like the 24-105L, you can observe that the resolution of the zoom is also better. Very strange ;D.

What is your opinion?

Problems with 50 f1.4 & 135 f2.0 on 1.6x crop sensors

Hi everyone

Recently I've tested the 50mm f1.4 on a full frame (5Dii) and on a 1.6x crop sensor (T2i/550D) and realized that at f1.4, f1.8 and f2.0 the lens produces a perfectly clear image on full frame but a seriously unusable image on the cropped sensor. Seriously unusable as in severe chromatic aberrations and almost out of focus image at the center (where it was focusing). The 50mm only became usable on the crop body when stopped down to f2.8.

Has anyone experienced something like this?
Is it a bad copy of the 50 f1.4? (I don't have another at hand to test right away)
And most important: has anyone experienced something like this with a 135L f2.0?

Thanks
Joao

Rant/Wish - What Canon Needs to Keep Me "Loyal"

I have been with Canon for over 12 years. 100% Canon for over a decade. That being said, we are at the cross roads where dumping all of our Canon dslr gear. It would not mean much "loss" anyway since L can be sold easily and bodies are worn out anyway.

Of course, we have not pulled the trigger yet... awaiting what 1Dx and 5Dx/III have in store. We already know what Nikon has with high mpx D800 and high ido D4. Nothing is secret in Nikon's camp... high resolution outputs from D800 shows incredible detail and there are bunch of high ISO D4 files showing equal/better D3s performance! So, for us, Nikon is looking very good.

1Dx and 5Dwhatever are nowhere to be seen. Specs are everywhere! 1Dx is supposed to have incredible performance, but where are some high ISO samples?

In a nutshell, here are some points where Canon is getting beat pretty badly:

1. Dynamic Range: Both Nikon and Sony have eaten Canon alive in this. No comparison.
2. High ISO: Nikon is ahead... 1Dx was supposed to be promising, but where is the proof?
3. AF: Nikon AF is much better and much spread out to all of its pro and semi-pro models. Canon? Cripple everything.
4. Mpx: This is where Canon had advantage... not anymore!
5. Video: Again, Canon used to be the King, but with Clean Video... audio monitoring... Nikon is way ahead. I really doubt Canon would cannibalize its video division by giving these features in their dslrs.

Now please tell me why should sane people not "jump ship" to a BETTER system?

Canon 200-400mm f4 lens - worth waiting for?

The idea of putting glass between a 200-400mm zoom lens (however good!) and a camera to get some extra focal length does no appeal to me!
A lot of people are waiting for this lens which is going to cost a heck of a lot of money.
It had better be really sharp at 560mm!!
Why didn't Canon consider say a simple much cheaper 200-500mm f5.6 zoom design - so that they could drop the 400mm f5.6 L and the equally old 100-400mm L?
Lets hope this forthcoming lens does not end like another expensive partially successful Canon lens - the 400mm f4 DO - all they had to do here was to scale up the wonderful 300mm f2.8 but that was far to simple!

Do I need the 580?

First of all I'd like to say that I'm a hobbyist, not a professional photographer, and only recently did I get into flash photography. My current setup is 550D + 24-105L, but I'm getting one of the 5Ds (ii or iii) when the latter is available. I'm mostly shooting general "walkaround" photography with some lean towards press photography (e.g. political meetings and etc.). I also shoot at weddings, family reunions, that kind of thing. So now I need a flash since many of these events tend to happen indoors, and I'm currently deciding between 430 and 580.

From the looks of it I'll have only one flash for the time being (I'm not a studio photographer, more of an action one), and 580 seems to be easier to operate. On the other hand it's much heavier than the 430 and costs more. Do you experience this additional weight problem, and do you feel that the price difference is justified in this case?

From NL: NDAs expiring on the 2nd of March

Over at NL we read:

"20th We've hearing of NDAs expiring on the 2nd of March.
Now we also hear of a 5D3 (and only a 5D3) spec for a launch on the 2nd
22MP, 6fps, 61 focus points (41 cross) same as 1DX system
100-25600 Basic ISO 1024k dots LCD display 3:2 wide (or 3.2" ?)
Best Video quality in a DSLR.
After several different suggestions pointing to the start of March I'm wondering if we will indeed get an announcement on the 2nd. Fridays are not a traditional day for announcements, but perhaps we will see a 5D3 celebrating 25 years of EOS?"

Pocket Wizards Plus III - what am I missing here?

I've been thinking about adding a professional trigger system to my bag at some point. PW is one of the obvious choices. Also, the Phottix Odin looks pretty good. At the moment I'm ok with my cheap ebay triggers and (even more so) with a long ETTL cable and the Canon IR remote system.

Notwithstanding, I'm tempted to add something easier in the future. So the new PW Plus III caught my attention - especially at that price. However, a closer look shows that this "feature laden" gizmo really doesn't even cover the basics. ETTL? I don't think so. High Speed Sync? Doesn't look like it. Manual control over the settings of the 4 groups? Didn't see that either. So it's a bit like a fancy version of my ebay triggers. Or what am I missing here? Sure, for those who need long distance range, repeaters and a remote for the camera this might be it. I think I'm more looking still at the Phottix...

FF lens acquisition path

Hi!

Since xmas a happy 5dII owner and contemplating my lens path.
I am a hobby photo/gear freak, main usage is family, several vacation/business trips in the next years with the usual suspect places as cities, safari (planned once), mountains and beach (good to live in the heart of europe) as well as a little street photography.
Until now I got:
Sigma 50 (rarely used), 16-35 II and my big love and long standing dream 85LII which is glued to my camera at present.
A must buy in the near future will be the 24L and I might sell the 16-35 and 50 to get a 14L.

I'm a prime type, means I can pass a whole vacation with just one or two focal lengths. Its my b-day soon and I have some bonus money itching in my pocket:
-everybody loves the 70-200 II and it would add a nice reach, but I keep salivating over the bigger primes though I don't want to spend 10000 on one lens and am looking for a prime alternative. I really frame badly with zoom, one thing too much to think about but I'll probably have to learn it one day

-How would you spend my money in order to get some classy reach and stay below 4000 dollars? If I get the 70-200 I'll add TCs for the times I need more reach? Shall I get the 135 and wait and hope a 400/4 may come out some day?

I must add that after years of cutting edges with my family I am at present heavily investing in my photo gear and only want high quality lenses without too many compromises (as long as it makes kind of sense and will be used frequently enough to somehow explain the expense).

Thanks, Andreas

Photo books advice

Tried searching (remembering someone in another thread got advice on some books) but couldn't find any good advice. So here goes.

I am quite comfortable shooting candids using natural light and bouncing a flash. And I know my ISO, aperture focal length etc.

However, I am trying to challenge myself into taking portraits, just not documenting what's going on... I know this is hard to master but I like challenges and I feel it is time for my next project. So I wonder if anyone have good advice on photbooks that is not covering just the basics but reaches out a little further?

The book(s) can definetely cover composition and body language etc. I like Anton Corbijn's work (although some of his images is mainly "great" just since the person is famous) and I am planning for doing the same things of friends and family. Ie not just the ordinary pleasing I-am-smiling-portrait, I want to create something more. Perhaps introducing a subject next to them or trying to have them expressioning a feeling that is beyond their natural pose... etc.

Any advice on blogs, sites, books etc are more than welcome!

(The current project idea is "10 years"... that would be me in 2012 trying to portrait how myself and others interprets the person and then doing the same thing in another 10 years and then print a(!) book (yes, most liekly one book for myself) the reason being I am 35 and people seems to be going through alot of changes, the same way we did when we were 25 and I wish I had those shoots of people from back then)

How to get / test a good copy of a L lens?

I'm going to buy a 70-300L (but the question is valid for any prime tele lens), and since these are precision optics well below the price of the hubble space telescope, there are big variances and I am wondering how to end up with a sharp / non-ca copy. Two questions:

* Where to buy: Of course I could get the lens at the pro shop 'round the corner and test/return the lens numerous times - but at a premium of at least ~200€. Now you could say I'd get what I pay for, but suppose I didn't win the lottery and have to save $$$. I intend to get the lens from Amazon (I'm in Germany) - any experiences how often and w/o problems you can return the lens if the copy is bad?

* How to test: This is my most important question: If I get the lens, no matter what the source - How do I test that the lens is a good copy? Take pictures of some chart - and then compare them to what? Obviously every L lens takes 'good' pictures, but for me it would be impossible to tell if the lens I have is one that has been returned numerous times before and then ended up with me.

Thanks for your input, just now I really have no idea how to tell a good copy from a bad one...
