upgrade, in a sense...

ok, question for ya'll. I have currently plotted my lens purchases with 77mm thread in mind so that I can build a set of filters that will work on all of my lenses. But, now that the mkii versions are out, stepping up the size from 77 to 82, I'm wondering what the best option is? Should I buy 82 mm filters and step up rings? Or, should I go with a different system. Just trying to get a feel for what the options are. I probably won't be upgrading to the mkii's any time soon, but, I don't want to shell out a ton of $$ on ND's and graduated ND's only to have to replace them all in a few years....

1D Mark IV Exposure issues with AI servo in high burst mode

I have the 1D mark IV on a tripod and pointed to a bottle which is on the table.
Camera settings are : AV, AI SERVO an 10FPS burst and 5FPS (slow setting)

With 10 FPS I noticed that not all frames taken are exposed correctly.
With 5 FPS It seems all frames are correctly exposed.

I was wondering if it is normal that some frames are not exposed correcty with AI servo / 10 FPS combination ??

Thanks.

Sigma 8-16mm vs Canon 16-35mm

Im currently have:

Canon 450D

Sigma 8-16mm
Canon 24-70mm
Sigma 70-200mm OS
Sigma 50mm f/1.4

+ x2 teleconverter

Im planning to get a second hand 5DMKII sometime in the next month or so. This is will then complete my gear and I will stick to this for sometime. The 450D then will act as a second hand back up, and also for shooting things when I need a bit of a reach. Now crazy as it sounds, Im planning to take ALL of this backpacking. ( 6 months or so ).

One idea I have been thinking is to sell the 450D with the 8-16mm as that only works on the APS-C. And then get a 16-35mm on the FF. What do you guys think? ( The Sigma 8-16 has really nice IQ)

The upside: :)
1) I love the build quality of the 16-35mm. It can take some beating in the pack.
2) I will carry less gear = less weight.
3) I can then go out carrying 16-35 and 24-70 and 1 camera without carry 2 when I need to shoot wide.

The downside: :-\
1) I lose my back up body which can be useful when
i) I'm going into a dodgy area, I can "afford" to lose the 450D as opposed to the 5DMKII
ii) When I need to shoot really tight. The 200mm + x2 extender gives me 600mm
2) I lose out on the few mm at the wide end

What do you think? I checked out the reviews on the 16-35mm. It seems to have more barel distortion than the new Sigma. Does anyone know how the image quality compare? The IQ on the sigma is on par with the canon 10-22mm that I once had. Are the images sharper and more vibrant on the 16-35mm?

16-35 f/2.8II vs 17-40 f/4

I've been using a 17-40 f/4 for commercial work since it was first released in 2003. At the time it absolutely creamed the unloved original 16-35 f/2.8 from 2001, especially when hooked up to the 1Ds from around the same period.

It's been good but frankly the 17-40 isn't satisfying me the way it used to. I'd like to hear from photographers who have had both the 17-40 f/4L and the 16-35 f/2.8L II.

The newer lens is going to be a clear winner at f/4 but how close are they in reality when shooting at f/8 and f/11?
My bodies are FF (soon to be 1DX) and 1D4.

Lack of information with announcement so close

Every other camera which has been launched has had loads of rumours, we are now supposedly within a few days of the most anticipated camera, and there's hardly anything. Why is this?

A rumours not too long ago was that Canon have a number of possible cameras and have been awaiting the reaction to the D800 before making a choice as to which one to produce, but surely that decision must have been taken a while ago?

Why would Canons security for this camera be so much better than it has been for the other cameras?

Or could it be that we're not going to see the 5D MkII replacement announced on the 28th?

Recommendation: Filter for premium lenses

First of all, many thanks goes towards everyone who inputted my thread last week. I am set on the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L mk II lens.

Next up is a filter for these nice lens. I have read some incidents where the sharpness degrades with these lens when a filter is placed on it. Some say there is no need to get a filter for these lens as the glass on these are more superior than the glass most filters have to offer.

I am looking at B+W filters, but there are so many out there. Are there any general purpose quality filters?

Is this one any good? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/B-W-F-PRO-VIP-GOLD-MRC-UV-Filter-Made-Germany-77mm-/370530232324?pt=Camera_Filters&hash=item564552a804

I'd generally like the idea of filters as I can at least replace the filter if it gets scratched.

Thanks!

1D series bodies the only "professional" bodies?

Now if I had to classify myself to a level, it'd probably be around semi-pro. I broke into the photography world my sophomore year of college with a t1i and since getting more experience and graduating, I am wanting/needing to upgrade.

I am not trying to find the best match for my skill "level" at all, I just wanted to know why the 1d series bodies are the only ones considered to be "professional" level? I think most people classify the 5d series as prosumer even though it's used by so many professional photographers. What specs or features really set the difference?

Just curious.

Leica/Canon GLASS

I keep reading that most Canon lenses are not good enough if Canon makes cameras with higher MP count. It is also mentioned several places that Leica/Zeiss lenses will be able to take advantage of the higher MP sensors.
I am trying to understand what quality of the lens (sharpness/corner sharpness/'resolution' etc) that effects this phenomenon and how can I measure which lens is 'better' in this regard.
Thank you so much for any thoughts.

Panoramas or Stitching + Interior Shots

Over in the lens suggestions for Grand Canyon thread, I was reminded about how an ultra wide angle lens can make things seem really far away.

I notice this effect using the 16-35 II at 16. While I can get the subject into the frame, the results are not always what I want.

I have tried handheld stitching and panoramas, and for close work the results have been bad.

I did a small stitched panorama (handheld) when I went to the Grand Canyon as a whim (panorama, not the trip), and it turned out nice once it was put together by Photoshop. I wish I had done that a couple of times.

If I wanted to stitch together an interior shot of a room and not try to fit it all in using a (ultra) wide angle lens, what is the best approach for someone that isn't well versed in Photoshop?

Mirrorless Wish

I have a 5D MKII and also a Lumix G3 and Sony Nex5n. I use these 3 cameras when travelling and fid alwasy the 5D is the king of IQ. Even though the sensor is 4 years old, it easily beats out the G3 and Sony!

I think that Canon could easily build a mirrorless camera around the 5D Mark II sensor, and it will be the boss of the mirrorless world! It will even given the m9 a rund for its money, all they need to do is combine with the DiGic 5!!!

The only issue would be lenses for the system! But if canon use the Leica model for Flange range they could really have small lenses!

I dream but would love to see a FF mirrorless that is affordable!

p.s. both G3 and Nex5 in daylight offer great IQ!

BUSTED?

Simonxu11 on our forum busted this one pretty quickly. It appears at least one of these spec lists appeared last May on Camera Gear Guide.

thanks Simon

The split in the line is still something that has come from a few places. The most common resolution numbers for each camera are 22mp and 34mp. Again, everyone is pointing to two full frame cameras under the 1D X.

New Specs?

The following specs have shown up on a Chinese web store. How factual it is, I am unsure. Some of the specs I’ve seen, others I haven’t. However, if there’s a split of the 5D line, and all signs point that way, some specs may be getting mashed across each model. More about the split in a bit.

15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 vs 17-40mm f/4L for a crop camera

Again, I've posted here before asking about different lens. So now I'm being a little realistic.

Rather than purchasing 24-105, I'm thinking about getting the 17-40mm as a replacement for my kit lens.

Which lens is going to be a better replacement for my 18-55mm?

If you do have another suggestion, I'd like to hear it as well. But my price range is from $500 - $800.

(Side note, I do not plan on going FF. I do plan on upgrading to a 7d though, even though it's still a crop sensor camera)

Eneloop batteries for my flash

Hope this is thie right place to post this.

Im planning to get the energiser 1-hour charger. Looks pretty convenient for backpacking. 1 hour charging. Thats all I need.

Im aware that the eneloop batteries are cool. Just wondered if anyone has used that in any energisers chargers? Or is there a way to find out if they are compartible with the energiser 1-hour chargers?

Used 1D Mark IV dirty sensor

I purchased a used 1D Mark IV, received it yesterday (Friday the 17th). Took it out for an hour for testing and messing around, came back and saw spots in my pics. Luckily I had an extra CPS coupon so I immediately boxed it up and it's on it's way to Jamesburg.

So my question is: being new to the Mark IV, are they prone to dirty sensors, kinda like the old 5D Classic, or is it just one of those things? By the way, the shutter count is approx. 9,300, but I am having Canon tell me that while it's there.

Thanks for all help...

Ken
