Chromatic abberation problem Tokina 12-24mm on Eos 60D & 7D

I need some help, please:

I bought a new Tokina 12-24mm lens for my Eos 60D.
The lens is sharp, there is nearly no vignetting, BUT there is a lot of Chromatic abberation, heavy chromatic abberation, at 15mm to 12mm. red and blue lines on the end of the edges.
Does anybody have the same problem?
What can I do? The lens has the problem @ an aperture of 4 to 22, @ 4.0 it is really heavy.

How can I correct the CAs? Is there any possibility to do so automatically (Canon DPP lens recipie), or do I have to correct it manually?
The same problem at my wife´s 7D.

Much thanks

Yongnuo 565EX speedlite - Canon 580EXII compatible.

Hi folks,
I already have a 580EXII and an older 420EX, and wanted a second 580EXII - but they have disappeared (now that Canon has withdrawn the 580EXII from sale and offers only the better and much more expensive 600EX).

I just thought I'd share some experiences having just purchased a Chinese-made 'compatible' speedlite.
I didn't want to pay too much, and the economics (AUD199) were compelling so I thought I'd give it a go.

The unit in question is the Yongnuo Speedlite YN565EX - and claims to be compatible with and largely equivalent to the Canon Speedlite 580EXII when used on qualified cameras (e.g. a 50D like mine).
It's made in China (allegedly by the people who made the 580EXII for Canon under contract, or so the local sales agent told me).

I suspect that it may be marketed under different names in other countries.

Here's my observations.

Yes, it's (mostly) compatible. There's a Canon version and a Nikon version

You can drive the C.Fn and operational functions like a 580EXII from the menu of a compatible camera like a 50D or later

It works OK as a wireless (infrared) slave to a 580EXII or STE2

The metering and controls are much the same, except that it's ETTL not ETTL2 - at least the bit that's not the same is the lack of high-speed flash sync

It lacks the nice rubber weather sealing on the hotshoe mount that exists on the 580EXII, as well as not having the lever-latch for hotshoe

One bonus - you get a manual that's in Chinese as well as English! ;)
Canon EF 300mm f/4 IS L Macro Capability Improved

This prime lens has a good macro (long distance) capability at 1.5 meters. Now it is even better if you add a Kenko 2x teleconverter model Kenko C-AF 2X Teleplus Pro 300 DGX. My test shows some excellent results with a Kenko 2X and Canon 7D. This makes for a great birding and macro combo in one lens. More details of my macro test here:

Is there a best time to buy new lenses...?

Hi All,

I'd like to know if there's a particular time of the year to buy lenses for the best price (aside from ocassional rebates)? E.g. Does lens prices normally stay the same throughout the year of dip during particular parts of the year, say Black Friday, around Christmas time, etc.?

I wanted to know if it's practical to time my next purchase, very likely the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM, or 35 f/1.4L.

Thanks for your input!

TSE Macro Lens

A few years ago I used to have a Carl Zeiss macro lens lens for my Contax camera, a 100mm f4 S Planar bellows lens. This lens produced a much larger image circle than 35mm. It had to be attached to the camera via automatic bellows, which had a swing and shift mechanism built in. Photographing small objects like boxes require converging vertical correction like buildings.

Does anybody think Canon would introduce a 100mm f2.8L TSE macro lens, it would be a worlds first for digital.

Constant AI Servo on 5d3?

Hello everyone, I've been slowly moving toward primes lately (not the "I'm going primes because zooms are mainstream" kind of thing, I just like the shallow DoF and the IQ primes provide more at the moment).

The one thing that keeps bothering me is how shallow the DoF really is, and that brings me to a question - has anyone tried keeping AI Servo mode on while shooting with primes wide open? And if so, what did you achieve?
Thanks in advance.

The 7D for half price

I Have a friend who is a Technician for Canon who let me in on a little secret when i was thinking of buying the 7D as my full time Forensic Camera,He told me that if i want all of the good features of the 7D with the traditional focusing system meaning it will do "dark" and it will AF on fast moving targets, he had me interested and then when he told me that with my discounts and such i could have one for less than half the price of the 7D i was hooked and i said when does it hit the market, to which he smiled and said it's already here , the Rebel T3i is a 7D in disguise he said almost all the boards and such in the T3i are the same board numbers that the 7D calls for for typical problems and if you look the specs up on the 2 cameras they are almost identical, also the 60D is a Rebel T2i. I hope this info helps someone save money.

The price of your camera does not make you a pro the camera is a tool its whats in your mind that makes that tool a Pro !!

How much does a dual-card slot matter?

Grasping to straws if there is any reason for me to get a 5d3 instead of a 5d2 I'd like to get you opinions about the importance of the dual-card slot. Only the 5d3 has it, Nikon puts it even in consumer models like the d7000 which was very appreciated in reviews. The question is: What's it good for?

 • Speed: on the 5d3, that can't be the reason because the sd slot is crippled and much slower than udma7 cf. Does it make a difference if writing hires jpeg to sd and raw to cf in comparison to writing both to cf like on the 5d2?

 • Reliability: brides are said to be somewhat grumpy when your no-name budget cf card breaks without jpeg backup on a second card, if you are a high profile shooter this could even ruin your business. The question is: how large is the likehood of cf/sd cards breaking without being recoverable, and are there differences between brands?

1Dx availability in the UK

I have a pre-order for the 1Dx with Jessops in the UK. For readers in other countries Jessops would be the UK's biggest High Street photographic retailer but in my opinion at least, not necessarily considered a professionals, of which I am not one, first port of choice, it tends to cater more for the High Street market. Anyway I was in the newly refurbished Aberdeen Store today (well done Jessops, long overdue) to enquire if there was any update on availability.

I made my preorder about 6 weeks ago I think, once I knew the June date looked realistic from reading this site and others. When I ordered they already had 26 preorders, not much but as I said its not where most Pro's would opt to go. Their very helpful staff member was able to tell me that they were due to receive 12 bodies on Monday 2nd July and a further 12 on the 9th of July. Typically for me I'm about 27th in the queue and I am also going away on holiday on the 6th July for a fortnight so if by some luck I was able to get one of the 2nd batch I'll be away on holiday, damn! I had hoped I would have had it before going on holiday but realistically never expected to, just typical I'm going to be so close but yet so far. Talk about frustrated, I know from reading on here there are posters who have been waiting way longer than me so apologies if I'm sounding hopeful and I've only been waiting a few weeks. When I pre-ordered there was no requirement for any payment, I tried to pay a deposit today in order that the 1Dx would be held for me until my return from Holiday however doing that was going to bump me to the end of the queue, I'm not sure if anyone having paid a deposit would give them priority.

Anyway I suppose the encouraging news is that if Jessops are getting 24 in the next week or so then I suppose it would be fair expect other major retailers worldwide to be getting decent stock levels also.

16-35 MKII USM L > Lens Alignment tool with MA..which looks better?

I wasn't sure initially but thought perhaps my 16-35 may have been slightly soft in certain areas of the photos. I finally got out the Lens Alignment tool (MK II version) and set up for preparation

The first image is at "0" whereas the second image has an added Front Focus adjustment of +5. I'm curious as to your thoughts as to which one looks better either photo ending with 75 @ 0 or photo ending with 79 which has the +5 adjustment..I think I'm going blind after staring at dots and stripes for 2 hours. If you can try and ignore the lighting (slight difference) - these are crops from RAW's as JPGs no sharpness or unsharp or other enhancements were done of course. If you think they are both off then advise..thanks n advance..download if need be to zoom

Just got my 600EX...

...now what?

I'm a video guy first, stills is a hobby for now. I was taking a few shots under a tent and everything was so ridiculously dark, no matter what settings that I realized just as with video, light is really important, so I got myself a flash. The latest and greatest bad boy.

So, now what?

The manual is huge, way larger than that of my 60D, and I would like some help as to where to begin. Do I start with the manual and learn how to sync up with the camera and how to use it? Or are there websites that are more valuable in giving me a crash course. I think I won't actually use it until I have some understanding of it, even though I am the type of person that usually likes to "figure it out" I realise this may be a bit much to just simply figure out.

So, just looking for suggestions on how to proceed. I also bought a flashbender, if that matters.

Cheers!

Is CPS service falling into dumps for others?

Wondering if others are having trouble dealing with CPS lately? I'm considering dropping my Canon Professional Services membership after being told today that a replacement screw on my 24mm TSE II lens was going to cost $179! For a small five cent external screw... When I asked the account manager how they could consider that anything other than price gouging they answered that a large portion of the price was for "evaluation". I asked what the point of sending in the "free clean and check" coupon was then and they answered that this was a more thorough check than the coupon was for. Even though I didn't ask for a more thorough check, I just wanted the screw replaced! I had recommended them in the past, but curious now whether others are seeing their service drop the past few years?

Best Lens for Tabletop Dinnerware Shoot

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering what other photographers are using when shooting products? I've been hired by a magazine to shoot high end dinnerware, silverware products and I'm not sure is using a TS-E 90mm 2.8 or 100mm 2.8 macro would be best?
This will be shot indoors on a large table; the editor and stylist want the focus to be both single items and overall look and feel...... with some DOF. I'm using a Canon 5D MK2 for this shoot.

Also, what do you guys think about using a 50mm 1.4 prime?

Any input would greatly be helpful :)

5D3 Shutter is sticking. HELP!

Hey guys. All of the sudden I am having problems after taking a few pictures. When I turn on the camera I can see through the viewfinder and can snap a pic, it appears on the screen, I tap the shutter button to take another picture and all I can see is black, the AF motor searches but it can't find anything.

(This happens in RAW, JPEG, B,M,Av,Tv,P.... Sometimes on normal and normal high speed and every time on the silent modes...)

Whats weird is the problem does not happen on C1-C3...

I have messed around with all the setting and can't come to a solid conclusion on how to fix...

Any ideas???

From LensRentals.com

Roger Cicala at LensRentals.com has put the two new Canon primes through a resolution test and compared them to other lenses in the Canon lineup.

A lot of people are still a bit confused by these two lenses, however their size and decent performance may find a place in the market.

Conclusion

The bottom line is these are both nice, sharp lenses. Certainly sharper than the current 24-70 f/2.8 L zoom (we’ll have to see if they’re sharper than the 24-70 Mk II) and better than the 24mm and 28mm lenses that they – well, I guess replace. Although I have trouble considering a lens a replacement when the price has jumped 200% to 300%.

Clean HDMI out on the new T4i?...Sort of....

Interesting article....that the T4i may have clean HDMI out...but possibly not true HD.

http://nofilmschool.com/2012/06/did-canon-give-t4i-clean-hdmi-out/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nofilmschool+%28NoFilmSchool%29

From the read, I gather that this limitation, on say the 5D3, is purely software related and the camera is crippled by Canon.

Hoping Magic Lantern can fix this!!

Interesting read on the findings of the pre-prod releases of the T4i...and various findings in the wild on these.

Non Genuine LP-E6

Have been having troubles sourcing Genuine Canon LP-E6 batteries where I live in Pattaya, Thailand, like many things here the term ORIGINAL has numerous definitions...have tried numerous camera shops, even a Canon one ( have to say the worst service, product knowledge of any Canon shop ever)...
It seems that any shop that sells cameras stocks OSKA Pro Series LP-E6

[urlhttp://www.fotorelax.com/forum/index.php?topic=41934.0]

Just wondering if any one has had experience with these, even if I can find an "Original LP-E6" there is always a doubt that it is original, so it may be easier to go with this OTHER brand.

Have searched Google and even with translating pages I haven't been able to find a review, at least not in any real form of English...

Thanks

Climbing Mt Fuji in August

Good evening everyone,

Sorry if this is not the correct section to post this. I am currently seeking some advice on what gear I should take with me on my Mt Fuji climb in August. I have never done an overnight hike before, let alone one to see the sunrise.

I currently have a 40D

70-200L F4 (UV & Cir Pol Filters)
17-40L F4 (UV Filter)
50 F1.8

I am thinking about bring both the 70-200 and the 17-40 with me. I sold my tripod when I moved to Japan but I am thinking about picking one up for the trip. Most likely a Manfrotto 190Xprob (with out a head).

Do you think it is worth while taking the tripod? And is there anything else you would recommend maybe a Cir Pol for the 17-40mm?

Thank you very much for the help.
