Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

Elegant trogon taken yesterday at Madera Canyon (Arizona) with 100-400ii and 1.4xiii extender (plus a little cropping and other adjustments in post). A local visitor guide is requesting trogon photos so I went with this setup since I needed the length. However this is likely my last photo shoot with Canon. I received Nikon D850 a week ago (with Nikkor 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 plus extender). I am on the waiting list for the 500 f/5.6PF lens, so after I trade in my Canon gear I will be without a really long lens until it comes in. The Canon 100-400 is great when it works, but I continue to have focus issues in certain situations which is why I sold my first one a couple years ago.

The 100-400mm II is arguably the best longer-range telephoto zoom available. We have taken many 10s of 1000s of bird photos with each of our ones without any focus problems. Nikon’s 80-400mm is an apology of a lens, and some serious Nikon bird shooters use Sonys + Sony 100-400mm when they need a zoom. Goodbye and good luck with your Nikon gear!

I point people to EF lenses all the time that have a specific budget, so much value right now.

Yeah, a second hand EF lens is way cheaper with in some cases even better performance.

Have you had any experience adapting EF SIGMA lenses? I really want that 105 f/1.4 again. I much preferred it to the 85 1.2.

Unfortunately no, I am sticking to Canon lenses because over the years I kept reading about issues with Sigma Lenses and variations from copy to copy, buts it’s interesting that you prefer it over the bokah monster, I guess I should check it out.

I still have the EF 200 f/1.8L, but Midwest Photo Repair in Michigan closed, and I haven't found anyone else that can rebuild the focus motors, so I don't use it often.

Been looking at many 300mm F2.8 IS lenses on ebay, and although the price seems nice, potential repair, and my tight budget, has prevented me from buying one.

Focus was hard, it would break in the middle of the zoom range, but focus at 400mm?? not sure what was the issue, but manual and auto focus both were hard.

100-400 IS II + 2X II + 2x III + 1.4x III = f/32 at 400mm end. What do you expect for that f number. The EXIF data say f/11, so were you really using 3 stacked TCs?

Yeah I know its tough on the camera, I am just describing the experience.

The camera only reports the 2x TC, everything else is never reported, same for 2x II with 1.4 III, reports the 2x and ignores the 1.4, it says in the exif 642mm which means its 321mm x 2 x 2 x 1.4 == 1798mm and yes f11 == f31?

I've tried using extension tubes on mine. Autofocus becomes unusable on the R5, but I can manually focus *IF* the subject is slow enough. Unlike many lenses the extension tubes don't accentuate chromatic aberrations very noticeably
