It would be a country of origin thing, so a EU-Australia FTA would not be applicable here.

Canon cameras are manufactured in Japan/Taiwan/etc..., so French customs should charge whatever the applicable rate is for cameras made in Japan/Taiwan/whatever, whether it is imported via Australia or directly from Canon HQ.

I think you're right, and I a was wrong!
When years ago, I ordered a lot of woodworking tools from Lee Valley, Canada, the French customs wanted to apply a tax depending on the country of origin of each individual item. Yet, since this would have taken them -and me- hours, they suggested an "average" tax for the whole lot.
Tax matters are indeed a complex matter and can be subject to interpretation, at least in France...

I bought mine for € 4299 in Germany. With some sellers (official, reputable camera shops) it is possible to negotiate

But despite recently upgrading to R5ii from R6 and having a nice collection of RF glass (14-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm 2.8,200-800mm,35 mm1.4, 100mm macro), I mainly use Panasonic LUMIX cameras by now.

It started with the S9 (small and compact, comparably cheap camera with IBIS and lots of video features), but I also picked up a S5IIX and a couple of extra L-mount lenses.
I LOVE how much smaller and lighter the 24-60mm f/2.8 is for example, especially compared to my RF 24-70mm F2.8L.

With my R6 I wasn't able to film in 4k60 even for 8 minutes, while I can't bring the S9 or S5IIX to overheat at all. IBIS without corner wobble, shutter angle, built in fan and 6K open gate are spectacular features.

Due to these customs duties (tariffs are a part of the broader class of duties) then buyers in the EU can't just blame Canon Europe for the higher pricing. I know that grey market sellers are getting them elsewhere but they also can't avoid the duties in that case.

Whenever there is a comparison across countries for pricing, perhaps we can break it down further via tariffs than just ex-tax (GST/VAT/sales tax) so that the Canon premium per region is more easily seen.

No sense blaming Canon for price gouging if the pricing is actually closer. Grey market seller exist to avoid this which is why they don't exist in Australia anymore.

That said, Canon Australia doesn't provide any CPS support except for a very narrow set of pro business users and their prosumer try/buy experiences went a long time ago unfortunately. They clearly don't believe the extended warranty costs them very much though and there are still rebates from time to time although perhaps Canon HQ is back-to-back with Canon Australia.

No, nothing at all, unless you bring over Euro 10000 without declaring the actual sum. Then, you'll risk a heavy fine since it could be considered an attempt at money-laundering.

So in theory if someone was traveling around they could stop in country A and borrow some money, stop in country B and buy a Canon R5ii, stop again in country A, visit a friend and in a rush not to miss the plane forget the R5ii. After the person returned to country C and realize the mistake, they decide since the friend in country A wasn't paid back the borrowed money, they decide to just accept it as "G-D of tariff and custom fee countries works in mysterious ways," because they are good honest Christian/Environmentalists who love the environment too much for taking unnecessary flights or abusing the international mail.

N=1, so take it with a grain of salt: the front wheel on my M6II started having ghost clicks, which seems to be a fairly common issue. The Kamera Express person immediately dismissed it as "software issue" and basically told me to go pound sand and not bother them for warranty. This was within the regular warranty.
I fixed it myself with some compressed air and lots of spinning, but it soured me on KE. Luckily we have Cameraland and Cameranu here as well, which both have been proactive (e.g. calling me to ask if I experienced a specific issue) and not outright dismissive.

Hmm. If it was the tripod you'd get telltale wiggles on the stars. If you're focusing manually then it's clearly not the AF! If you're unable to get a focused image with MF even zooming to 10x/using the focus assist then presumably the lens has been knocked/damaged/become misaligned? Unless there was some temperature issue, but that seems unlikely in the circumstances.

I have that lens and use it frequently with no issues, but being cheaper I expect there's a lot more copy variation than with L lenses. Fwiw wide open it doesn't have the best sharpness so I stop down, just a bit if light is lacking (f/2), and often to f/4.

I don't have time to look for it right now, but I seem to remember Roger Cicala posting a blog entry many years ago that expressed his surprise that many of Canon's mid-grade lenses had about the same copy variation as many similar L lenses. Similar in the sense of focal length, zooms compared to zooms, primes compared to primes, and so on.

I'm not building out a new system - the goal / my use case was a SMALL ff walk around 50mm. See I've been stuck shooting my 50 1.4 at 2.8 for over 10 years....wider than that and it becomes very unreliable. Well..now I am shooting at 1.8 and everything is sharp all the time, and easy access to luts/ lumix labs to cut down my editing times and shoot directly towards moods. Also to be able to try out lenses- sigma especially - that I simply did not have access to as a canon shooter. I did not go with sony as the a7c does not fit the design I was looking for (m62 /sigma BF) style body.
