Canon R4

There have been some posts on YouTube which mention the R4, and various levels of certainty that it isbcoming Real Soon Now, but which present more as fan-fiction than actual rumours. The specs seem remarkably similar to the R5 II, but of course much cheaper.

As has been pointed outccountless times before when an "EOS 4D" was suggested, the number four has a bad connotation in Japanese and Chinese (and probably more Asian languages) as it is linked to death (they have same or very similar pronunciation): four = 四/sì, death = 死/sǐ.

It's so ingrained in Chinese culture, that you won't see floors with four in it: 4th, 14th, 24th, 34th, 40th-49th, 54th and so on.

They did have a 40d, 400d, and 4000d. And a 5d4

Roman numerals don't count, so the 5D Mark IV is not a bad luck charm.

I could be wrong, but I doubt the numerals 40, 400, and 4000 sound similar to 10 deaths, 100 deaths, or 1000 deaths, either.
And why would Arabic numerals count by that logic? That's not native to Japanese either. The 5dIV is called the "five dee mark four" which in Japanese would contain the word. Other Japanese companies don't seem to avoid the number too much. Nikon had a D4 and a J4. Sony had a PS4. Fuji has an XT4.

In any case, number 4 can be pronounced as both shi or yon in Japanese. The latter seemingly preferred due to the death connotation of the former. But for the same reason, the use of the number doesn't seem to be avoided by Japanese companies to the same degree as Chinese companies.

They do, at least in Chinese. 40 = four ten (四十 Sìshí), 400 = four hundred (四百 Sìbǎi), 4.000 = four thousand (四千 Sìqiān), 40.000 = four wan* (四万 Sì wàn).
Google translate translates 40.000 to 4 万 (4 man) in Japanese.

It's the sì vs sǐ similarity that triggers the reaction (ie it's only the tone that is different - down vs down-up).

*) Chinese counts in units of 10.000 = one wan. 10.000 = one wan, 100.000 = ten wan, 1.000.000 = one hundred wan, 10.000.000 = one thousand wan, 100.000.000 = one yi (= one wan wan).

Maybe Canon is more sensitive to the number 4 because they've been marketing heavily in China since the latter part of the 20th century?

Canon currently dominates the Chinese market to a greater degree than they do in Japan, the U.S. and Western Europe.

First off the name seems off, shouldn't it be the R3 mark II, R2, or R1+.
If you look at the Nikon Z7, Z8 or Z9, there 45mp. The Sony A1 is 50mp. I' ve looked at both the R1 & R3, but I don't want a 24mp camera. I have the R5 mark II and love it, but I would buy a pro grade camera from Canon if it was 45mp.
Maybe they will stop production on the R3 and make this camera.
Bottom line even if this is true, we won't see it until 2027.

While I suppose someone could choose to pronounce the Roman numerals, 40, 400, in my experience learning the language from and interacting with native speakers, it's not. I think @SwissFrank has more experience than me, though.

The R4 was a Leica reflex from 80s.
With "wonderful" British electronics by Ferranti. The first unreliable Leica I'd say...
The R4 S and S2 were, later on, far more reliable thanks to improved electronics. But the Eumig (Austria) made drives and winders were an absolute garbage, metal screws into brittle plastic etc...
That was also a time when many were convinced Leica could be taken over by Minolta due to a cooperation that started with the R3.
A few lenses were "co-developed" like the 2,8/24mm, the 16mm fisheye and the 800mm catadioptric tele.
