I have the RF 100mm version (ie no AF), and I'm very happy with it optically, hand-held or on tripod. It's a little like driving a manual car after years in automatic - when you get used to it, it feels fine.

Yeah, looks like Venus Optics really put effort into recruiting reviewers for this release. Most of the sites and youtubers I frequent had reviews ready the day the announcement dropped or very shortly thereafter.

I actually really enjoy using fully manual lenses on a mirrorless body, the haptic feedback really does it for me. Pity all of the RF autofocus lenses are focus by wire.

I like having fewer air/glass interfaces and prefer manually focusing.

I don’t agree with the first part. Personally, at least, I rarely shoot macro on a tripod. My handheld shooting in the 1:1 to 5:1 range is generally with the twin flash mounted on the lens or on Wimberly F-2 brackets. That does render IS unnecessary, and at those magnifications I generally 'focus' by just moving the camera back and forth.

Very true, I was making the mistake of only considering ambient light photography, and a lot of people certainly do use flash. I used twin-macro and various other flash set-up myself originally, and adopted the same focus method, but nowadays I prefer to shot by ambient light whenever possible.
