Worst of Canon 2023: It’s Unanimous

It should be patently obvious that canon knows the market best and has all the relevant data to justify their product decisions. We should respect their choices as we in the forum are not their target market

The most shameful failure for Canon in the year 2023 is simply
that Sony 200-600 with 1.4TC resolve noticeably better than Canon 200-800 without any additional optic.

Before we get to our #1 pick, we have to first bring up what Craig and I feel is the worst product of 2023. Originally Craig had another pick but I changed him to the dark side so this is now a unanimous decision. Check our best of 2023 #2 and #3 here and here.

Richard, according to the advertising: "Never miss the shot with Face+ tracking AF & eye detection" - you used fake news to mislead Craig!

... it's definitely the EOS R100 ...
Fully agree with this worst product of 2023.
I think I wrote in a discussion about it, that the spec was just to reach the price.
And everyone being a bit into MILC cameras will save a bit more money to pick the R50 in an instant instead.
... This one I feel was a huge miss by Canon – which probably means it will sell like hotcakes.
But all others might get the R100 instead, and therefore this forecast might pretty much become true.
And if so, again Canon did just right, once more.

Currently in the UK the R100 is selling at £499 with the 18-45 kit lens, and the R50 with same lens is £699. That makes the R50 40% more expensive. Without lenses it’s 50% more. That difference, even at £200 is significant for many people when photography probably isn’t their number one priority, and they have many other demands on their income. Time will tell who’s right and who’s wrong.

Unanimous? Nice attention grabber. I guess if 2 people agree on something, it\'s unanimous.

\"Just save more\" is pretty out of touch. These cameras are not targeted at those with larger pockets. The difference on B&H between the 2 models you compared with a kit lens. is $499 vs $749. 50% more.

Yeah, I expect some users from this forum to come and defend Canon because they are the market leader and know the best.

It is indeed a fact, from the source that was ever kind to Canon.

The Sony 200-600 is a better lens in terms of resolution, ease of zoom and weather sealing (it has superb sharpness at the long end as reported by opticallimits.com). But, it has one huge drawback: it weighs with the hood and 1.4xTC 2.575kg, which is way too heavy for me for carrying around and hand holding whereas the RF 200-800 at 2.133 kg is just within my capability.

Well, Canon always makes sure the affordable lenses are as unattractive as possible by making them extremely dark (RF-S 55-210, 200-800), have limited zoom range (EF-S 18-45), or just average optically (RF 24-50).

This could have been a decent camera with just a touchscreen. Canon probably saved $10 by not adding a touchscreen and made this total garbage.

Yeah, I expect some users from this forum to come and defend Canon because they are the market leader and know the best.
And what do you do?

People who just say "Save up the extra money" truly do not understand the financial situations of a lot of people.
