In this patent application (2024-007656), Canon looks to create small ultra wides for both full frame and crop. One of the designs is curiously either similar or is the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3. If it is the actual RF-S 10-18, then it also gives us the lowest back focus distance for the RF mount that Canon
Yes. definitely the most interesting lens here. Though I wish Canon would also look at taking advantage of the shorter flange focal distance in mirrorless, to design wider lenses. Something like 9-20mm would be cool. Maybe even an 8-20mm doesn't have to be so big in a mirrorless APS-C design?
But I also fear Canon doesn't take "prosumer lenses" seriously on the APS-C platform. Maybe it is more realistic to put your hope on a 3rd party company, if Canon opens the lens-mount? :-/ ... (The described 10-20mm design has reduced image height already at "intermediate" zoom-level, so also a bit sceptical about the optical quality of it?)
I know Canon often reduce image height at the widest. Including those fullframe zooms you mention.
But I don't remember seeing reduced image height already in the middle of the zoom range before, as the data sheet of RF-S 10-20mm patent application says.
But I might remember wrong?
