Hi,

I have some time looking for an explanation about the differences between the 1Dx and 5DmIII bodies. In some pages i found that 5DmIII is "weather resistant and" the 1Dx "weather sealed".

Is there some reference of how effective are the sealings as the IPxx code?

Thanks.

No, Canon performs no standardized testing/certifications to back up their 'weather sealed' statements.

Having said that, the sealing on the 1-series bodies is more robust. O-rings on the 1D X in places where the 5DIII has foam, foam on the 1D X in places where the 5DIII has 'precision joins'. The 1-series design is also more conducive to sealing - no mode dial, better card door design, sealing on the body-side of the lens mount, etc.

Canon rep said that the rule of thumb is this:
1DX all days under the rain no problem.
5D3 is just like you in normal wearing, if you feel you are getting soaked and wanna get out, then it's time for the camera as well.

A friend if mine had to know what a 7d plus 24-70 mk1 could take in terms of rain, before he went on a trip. So He placed it in the floor of his shower and turned the shower on full power for 5 minutes. It survived and was ready for the trip, then at the airport he showed me his new camera and dropped it onto the very hard tiles on the floor by accident. It also worked after that.

I haven't used a 5d in heavy rain, because when I had a look at the foam sealings, they don't look like they would take it. The rubber seals and channels to lead the water away, like around the memory card slots on the 1-series is just something else. And they work, I have used 1-series in ridicolous weather, think my shoes were submerged on a flat street, it had never ever even fogged up.
