I was originally planning to give to my mother an artist my 5dmark 2 and 24-105 and purchasing 5dmark 3 and new 24-70 ( she has a rebel t3) but the price premium allows me to buy just one. I currently have 5dmark 2, 24-105, 24/1.4 85 1.2 70-200 II. My uses are versatile lots of travel, low light, portraits. Any suggestions? Bodies are becoming slightly more important in digital but lenses keep their value.

Thanks

I guess it kinda depends how set you were on giving your mom a cam, if you get the 24-70 II she gets jack squat. Honestly based on your senses I think you could do without the new 24-70 for sure, and the 5DIII is awesome, I moved up from a 5DII and am seriously loving it.

I would get the 5DIII for now, that way your Mom gets a cam and you get a badass new camera. I think the price on the 24-70mm might be lower by the time they start shipping it, I mean the original 24-70mm was $2100 MSRP in the press release, and they're significantly cheaper now. Get the 5DIII, you'll love it.

Depends on your style, but you might want to consider a 35mm or 50mm prime instead of the 24-70 II. With a 24L, 35L or 50mm and the 70-200, you'll have good coverage without the zoom. The trade is then between low light/shallow DOF versus more lens changes/convenience. And because the prime is less than the 24-70 II, that might speed up the camera fund. ::)
