70D RAW buffer reduced

The 70D should have a 16 shot RAW buffer, but after feeling my camera has behaved sluggish in this regard (the fps/buffer seems to slow down much quicker now) and playing around with the AF/Speed custom settings thinking it was that, I notice my shot buffer when you half-press shows 13; the 70D is meant to be up to 16 afaik for RAW only.

Card is a 32GB Sandisk Extreme (the pre-gold, red label one marked 45MB/s) but I also get 13 shots when I inserted a new Sandisk Extreme (gold labelled 60MB/s U3) Micro SD card. And I know in general the camera has a SD card slot around 40MB/s.

Now I'm not 100% sure that I ever saw 16 with these cards, but I think I have. I've mucked around with the AF custom settings, Long exposure NR, High ISO NR is Off, and that lighting thing is on standard (hmm on hindsight I didn't actually check if "Standard" is the same as off).

Anyway, anyone got any ideas what it could be? FWIW I did order an Extreme Pro card yesterday as it was on special but like I said I doubt the card is the issue.

Well, I know the number of frames that fit on the CF card changes with the selected ISO (larger ISO means larger RAW files means less images fit on the CF). So maybe the buffer size is also displayed differently depending on ISO settings. Also, make sure you're not shooting RAW+JPG. :)

Just some suggestions to try, not saying that's necessarily the fault here.

For people wondering I found one setting that was bringing it down a lot; the Safety Shift custom function if set in "ISO" mode. Putting that to Av/Tv put the displayed buffer up to 15 shots (also 15 if Off). Not sure which setting will give me the extra 1 for 16, but I'll take the improvement.

Wonder what the last one could be ...

I think the number is just a worst-case guestimate. If ISO safety shift is enabled, the camera seems to use ISO 12800 as input for the number calculation instead of the actual ISO used. And the card speed does not seem to go into the calculatio. Even with a relatively slow card, my 70D still gives me 16 shots RAW in fast burst mode (a fast card might give you one or two more, though), even though it displays only 12 with ISO safety shift and 15 without.
