a different look at the sensor topics

one thing i ask myself for a while is...

beside the "real world" implication (can be disputed splendidly) of the sensor performance.
isn´t it becoming a bad situation for canon that every website mentions that the sensors are not the best in it´s class?

let´s not make this another thread about DR or MP etc.
but how will this affect the average joe who reads a website to decide what camera to buy?

canon is number one in sales.
but over the last years i read (from DPreview to small websites ) that canons sensor performance is behind sonys etc.
it´s not only talked about on geek forums, it´s mentioned on websites customers visit to make a buying decision.

from "lacking" to "getting a bit long in the tooth" (18MP sensor) or "mediocre" i have read everything.

i mean, at some point this will be in the heads of the average customers.. not?

canon makes good cameras but their sensors are a not the best.

that can´t be what canon wants.

They should read all kinds of reviews, then also talk to a professional photographer too. Make a trully informed decision before purchasing...

I mean... I know a few wedding photographers and videographers... most of the videographers are mostly canon & sony (50:50 split) and the photographers are canon & nikon (50:50 split).

You see so many professionals with Canon, especially at sporting events (Fifa 2014, prime example). So many professionals can't be more wrong than the geeks and review boards online, can they?

If there is a change in shift, where Canon moves down to second/third/fourth... I think they will have no choice but to up the ante and at the very least come out with better sensors.

yeah well.

most people should eat less and do some sport.

i don´t know a single person who spoke to a pro photog before buying his camera.
so let´s assume that is not the case for most customers.

i wonder if this "sensor talk" will not have a bad influence on the image of canon?

remember what dpreview had to say about the 6D (i love by the way):

"It's difficult to shake the feeling that the EOS 6D simply lacks the 'wow' factor of its main rival. Whereas Nikon seems to have taken the approach of taking away as little as possible from D800 when creating the D600, Canon appears almost to have gone the other way, removing as much as it thinks it can get away with at the price. The result is the kind of conservative, slightly unimaginative design that's become the company's hallmark."

it´s not about truth.
it´s about what sticks in the head of the average joe.

the 6D still has kind of a bad reputation.

AF bad, too expensive for the feature set etc. etc.
i hear that a lot from people who have no clue.

i hear more critical remarks outside geek forums.
even from people who don´t know sh*t about sensors, quantum efficiency and thermal noise floor.

they might still end up buying canon... but it is my observation that canon has lost some reputation since the 5D MK2.

yes that is one nikon model with issues.
nikon has lost some reputation too because of this debacle.
but let´s not make this nikon vs. canon.

when product reviews mention the sensor performance in such a way, it is negativ. there is imo no way around it.

when the 5D MK2 came out people praised the sensor.
i bet that was the reason many new customers decided to buy canon.

now dpreview writes that just for the image quality you can also buy a olympus m43 with a smaller sensor instead of a canon 70D.
because basically they offer nearly the same image quality.

In terms of image quality the 70D is essentially on a par with its rivals. The Nikon D7100 captures a fraction more resolution but the 70D comes closer to offering comparable low-light performance. This isn't enough to stop the Olympus OM-D E-M1 closing much of the gap on the Canon, despite its smaller sensor - leaving anyone without an existing investment in lenses with a tough decision to make.

i don´t know how the canon managers make their decisions and i guess they know what they are doing.

but shouldn´t they try to be the forerunner in sensor performance too... as market leader? if only for PR reasons!
