Any news on the SL1 sensor?

The rumors says the 70D and the SL1 are going to have the same sensor, I´m quite interested in how the sensor performs. The SL1 is already out there, but I have yet to find any sensor/camera reviews testing for high ISO, DR etc.
Anyone knows?

That was a rumor at one time, a later one says it will have the 7D sensor. No one knows, of course.

Do not expect the SL1 sensor to be a breakthrough in high ISO. It is a hybrid sensor that improves live autofocus a little, and its likely that there is a miniscule improvement if any in high ISO performance.

The Imaging Resource has posted their SL1 studio samples.

I compared them to the 60D studio samples and noise is the same at equal ISOs.
The catch is that the exposure times of the SL1 are longer.

So, it looks like the SL1 sensor is actually noisier than the 60D sensor.

I looked at the same pictures and the 60D looks noisier to me at 12800 but at 6400 they looked the same. But it looks like nothing to upgrade my t2i too. But I am hoping th 70D doesn't have that sensor but the 7DII if that ever comes out.

Looks like they just played with the noise formula a bit. It seems almost the same as the T4i, but in some cases (depending on colour) the SL1 wins, and sometimes the T4i wins.
If it is an overall improvement it would be very hard to tell.

So, it seems then that the only improvement, if any, over the good old 18mp sensor is down to processing power.
The SL1 is not for me anyway, but I did hope it would give us a taste of the new generation of Canon sensors.
Well well, my 550D still soldiers on bravely :)

Yes, I used the Comparometer (TM) to compare the 100D's high-ISO noise at 6400 to that of the 7D.

The difference was pretty much imperceptible. Maybe slightly better from the 100D in some areas of the picture, but honestly - was it any better to any useful extent? No.

So the 100D does seem to be just another outing for the 4-year-old sensor in the 7D, at least in terms of high ISO performance.

I'll give it a miss then. I might have been interested in it as a more portable body to take out when I didn't feel like taking the 5D3.

Its not possible to compare raw images for SL1 and 60D on the digital picture web site, just jpeg images, which means very little, since they were processed in camera with different firmware.

However, DXO has tested the raw output of the T5i which has the same sensor as the SL1, and found no change in raw output compared to 5 year old sensors from Canon. That's a more telling statistic than comparing jpg's on the digital picture.

Are you sure they share the same sensor? From what I read at launch, the T5i has the same sensor as the T4i, and the SL1 was something new. Maybe I had it wrong though.

Wrong. As far as I read the news, the sensor of the SL1/100D is "new", the sensor of the T5i/700D is the one used already in the T4i/650D.

Could be, we'll have to see when DXO tests the SL1. I hope its better.

I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade, but I think the point of the SL1 is quantity not quality. The new new sensor will be on the fabled 7Dll, you know, around the same time as the new 100-400 and the 200-400 are released :) . Of course there is a slight possibility that the 70D will introduce the new tech, but I doubt it.

I noticed that our local Costco store had a big pallet full of SL1's with a 2 lens kit today. It was not as small as I had expected, it feels pretty good even in my large hand.

DPR now has their review up, and at high ISO's, it doesn't match the 700D. I found that disappointing. That does not mean its a camera to avoid, but I had hoped for a better sensor, not a step down, even if its a small step.

They had this at Best Buy and I got to play with it a little. It is so tiny in my big hands. The 6D with a battery grip is perfect for me. I think the size is really the selling point for this camera. The daylight images look pretty good though. That 18mp sensor seems to be getting a little old. I'll probably never go back to an APS-C so I guess it really doesn't matter.
