Are 400mp stills coming to the Canon EOS R5?

Not sure this is that interesting to me, but time will tell...

Any word on the fps being given options with elec shutter?

Also does that mean these are still expected to happen?;
  • Lens breathing correction
  • Pre-shooting buffer
  • Removal of 30 minutes record limit
  • Vehicle tracking AF mode (bikes, trains & planes)
  • Additional tracking for more animals

The 30 minutes is EU regulation and not technical. I could elaborate about the EU but I would get banned.
I will elaborate: In 2007 EU imposed a higher duty (import tax) on video cameras than still cameras, and defined as video cameras those that could record 30 minutes or more continuously. Consequently camera makers limited (many of) their cameras to less than 30 minutes of video to make them cheaper in the EU.

That no longer applies, however: EU changed the tax rules (as part of changes negotiated within WTO). The change took effect on January 1, 2022, so cameras made or designed before that still tend to have the limit. There is no legal reason to have it in newer cameras or against removing it from old ones via firmware updates, but it will take some time before camera manufacturers get around to changing things. Given the timing of the rumored firmware for R5, it might well remove it.

Canon Thailand have just anounced firmware v1.81 for the R5 with pixel shift
The R3 also has new release but only for panning assist
That's a shame for the R3 folk, who might have been hoping for the pixel shift feature as well. But perhaps it would not work as well with a lower MP sensor?

Any materials released on the R5 firmware - with more details?

1. Adds [IBIS High resolution shot] to the camera menu. By utilizing the in-body IS mechanism, it is now possible to record images with higher resolution.*
*Use EOS Utility/Digital Photo Professional to check the images. EOS Utility/Digital Photo Professional will need to be upgraded.
2. Adds [Save/load comm. settings on card] to the camera menu.
Network settings can now be transferred between cameras of the same model.
3. Adds the ability for images to be cropped and resized during transfer to the FTP server.
4. Adds Protect Images During [FTP Transfer] to the camera menu. Images transferred via FTP can now be automatically protected. The user can determine if images have already been transferred via FTP.
5. Fixes minor issues.

Possible Canon EOS R5 Updates Coming:
Lens breathing correction
Pre-shooting buffer
Removal of 30 minutes record limit
Vehicle tracking AF mode (bikes, trains & planes)
Additional tracking for more animals

I still wonder if all of these features are tied to cameras with updated processors...
So most of the predictions were actually wrong...

There is no mention of any of these in the update details.

Seems the
Ok, confirmed. 400Mp mode is jpeg-only, there's no raw files for processing on a PC with DPP.
So, not a very useful feature unfortunately.

Technically, no. At least some of those could be implemented with a firmware upgrade, possibly even all of them. E.g., I'm sure the 30 min video limit could be easily removed, lens breathing almost certainly as well, new tracking modes depending on how much spare memory space there's for the firmware; pre-shooting buffer might be harder.

In any case none of those was done with the present 1.81 firmware as far as I can tell.

That does limit its usefulness significantly, but doesn't make it completely useless. The jpeg engine in R5 is pretty good if you can be bothered to learn how to tweak it. With a scene where you don't need much dynamic range and have time to adjust jpeg settings you can get quite good results. Of course if you normally only shoot raw it'd break your normal workflow and you'd have to learn the in-camera jpeg tools you don't normally need or care about, so it might not be worth the time investment needed.

It doesn't make it completely useless in general, but makes it useless for me. I can imagine shooting landscapes with this feature, but I need a high dynamic range and I'd like to avoid posterisation.

I took a sample 24576x16384 shot, here's a 1:1 fragment of it with minor shadow lifting in Lightroom:

What would this feature be used for? Is it for printing large billboards of static subjects? I wonder how many Mega Bytes the RAW files will be. Since Canon are adding new features the R5 II must be quite some time away yet.
Well, doesn't the article explain what it's used for?

Canon why you wouldn't start with 1TP = 1 terapixel = 1000MP where each JPEG file would require 1GB of memory? Complete nonsense. This is just a response to Samsung smartphones tiny sensors with 200MP.
Yes. Canon is shaking in fear. As Flip Wilson used to say, "The Smartphone made me do it."

BTW, if Canon also aims to VR and 3D - as outlined in their plans - highly detailed images is what you need if the the viewer can move and "get closer" inside a VR environment - to minimize the distance at which the resolution loss makes the image unusable. It could be introducing this in the R5 could be "prototyping" to understand better what to do in future cameras.
So THAT'S why they created the porn lens!
