Switching over from Nikon Interested In buying a new Canon 5D MKII($1529.00) either body only or with 24-105 lens(2399.00).
I see prices on body only seem to be coming down a bit but holding steady on body & lens kit!
Do we think we will see any large price drops in the U.S. market and how long should I hold out?
Thanks In Advance

You are buying 4 year old tech.

There has been lots of debate here and elsewhere about the merits of the 5DIII vs 5DII.

There is a huge improvement in plain old single point AF between the 2, the 5DIII excels compared to the II. Off center composition is nice. Selecting off center AF points at wde apetures did not work well for me and the same thing hasn't been an issue with the 5DII yet.

I do not yet know if the "black focus points" will be an issue for me.

With the recent sales at ~$2500, I'd strongly sugget the 5DIII.

If the budget does not allow for the 5DIII, then I'd suggest the 6D over a new 5DII, but the camera body size is not the same between those two.

I just thought by going to the 5D mkII I know most of If not all the bugs/Issues are worked out, on the other hand with the 6D I feel some what like a beta tester for Canon, not looking to buy problems.
May sound silly but!
Thanks
Jeff

I'm in the same situation trying to upgrade from t2i.

5d2 prices have been really low lately. The 6d has been getting favorable reviews too. Will probably hold off until next year. If and when the 70d/7d2 are announced, it might drive the price down even more.

Likely, there will be no more 5DII's available by then...

the mark II is a crazy good camera if you like to shoot with the center af point and when you are not interested in shooting sports only. the image quality (raw) is on a par with the mark III. i think it's a very good time to get started with fullframe :)

If you've got your heart set on the mk2, I say go for it. It's a great camera. at roughly $1500, it a hell of a value

I borrowed a mk2 before I brought my mk3. Some of the things that made me choose the mk3:

auto ISO in manual mode (mk2 is FULLY manual)
AF system (61-points)/new AI Servo settings flexibility
headphone output (for when I do video)
dual card slots
a little faster fps
some available features for my 600ex-rt that are only available on 2012 (or later) camera bodies
(I urge anyone else to add to this list as I'm sure I'm forgetting other stuff)

If these things aren't worth ~$1000 premium to you, I'm sure you'll be fine with the mark 2.

You might want to consider the 6d for ~$300-500 more. WiFi and GPS options alone are worth more than that if you buy those accessories separate for the other bodies. of course, that's if you'll use them. I've read lots of people find those features useful.

Get the 5D Mark II while you can as it will soon (2-4 weeks +/-) be gone for good. IMHO, looks like it's already a closeout price to me - I don't expect to see any further major price drops for it.

Consider the 6D (also FF) as it is newer tech at Christmas sale prices. Prepare for the 6D to bounce back to it's regular price after the current Christmas sale is over. Bugs, if any, will be few and far between.

If price is your sensitivity then get the 5D Mark II, if not, then buying the 6D makes sense.

I think you're basically right on regarding the body, but I don't think you'll see the kit drop any more either.

Don't worry about the "old technology" ... its a great camera.

You can get the body for $1529ish, and the lens for $869ish... means the kit price should be just under $2400, and thats what you're seeing.

Folks will tell you spend on newer... but a healthy step behind the bleeding edge.... is much cheaper.

Unlike a computer, where a baby step behind bleeding edge is a good price and also offers some degree of non-obsolescence, the camera bodies wont cease to run, or run on newer software, they'll still do fine, they'll still take fantastic pictures limited only by your imagination, creativity and experience.

If the 5D2 does what you need in photography, but it right now. If the price goes down any between now and the time they're all gone, what's it going to be? $50? $100 at most? Even that isn't likely.

You could get one today at Canon Refurb for $1407.

If the 5D2 does not satisfy your needs, find the camera that does.

Since you may not really know Canon, I'll say yes, your concerns about being a beta tester or buying problems do sound silly. Canon is not perfect, but they do not hang their customers out to dry. If there is a problem with new equipment, they take care of it promptly.
