Canon 5dmk4 pricing

OK so after a long wait and all the speculation a camera I have been waiting to get my hands on arrives. Quite ready to splash the cash as I make my living from it and then comes the price ... $3499 ok i think so around £2700 gbp a bit higher than the previous model and its not a massive evolution but a couple of bits worth a little more wifi etc. But no £3499 .... what on earth ? Thats really £1000 over where it should be at and I really see no worth in that purchase price at all. Why is this - another Brexcuse ? other ideas ? is it going to plummet down £500 in the next few months , its a strange departure from previous versions.

My second option was to wait for the 5d3 price to drop and get another one of those to replace my older backup but thats also stayed the same price ?

Seems a total con.

Thoughts and answers ?

If the US price is $3499, then with current exchange rates + VAT, the UK price should be £3170

IIRC wasn't the mk3 priced at £3299 on release? Personally I'm waiting until next year now as wedding season is slowing down now, hopefully by then the price should be around £2500

DigitalRev currently has the mk3 at £1610 & the mk4 at £2900. I've purchased from them many times & have never had an issue registering the serial numbers for CPS either although YMMV.

In Canada its ridiculously high. 4600$ for the Mark iv in Canadian dollars >:(. I was expecting 4000$. I have enough saved to buy it, but i would need lenses. All i have is 40mm pancake to use it with. :-\

I am moving to full frame so this was supposed to be my first full frame camera.
I can get a 5d3 for 2900. 1700$ DIFFERENCE. So i say to myself, is the new one worth the extra 1700? Yes its got a tonne of new features but........1700 ouch. Wasnt expecting that.

Now i am stuck. For that extra money i can buy a killer lens with the 5d3.

Here are my thoughts at the moment

a)wait it out ???. Once the 5d3 are depleted and the 5d4 is losing its lustre in the market, await the price drop next year. I cant see it dropping for a while though as the 6d2 will likely appear in april and they will mark that up as well so then you are really undecided and go with the 5d4.

b)wait for the 6dii
c)screw it, buy the 5d3 and buy some killer lenses.....upgrade your camera when the 5d5 comes and get the 5d4 (haha). Do all you pics in post anyway. 8)
d)get the 5d4, its a killer camera and be done with it. Start shooting now. :-X
e)wait for Nikon and Sony coming up the pipe. ???
f)Black Friday is coming..... ;D

I juggle the above daily. ::)

I am not sure it was ever that high in UK i purchased mine fairly soon after release at £2700 with the 24-105 lens and the price stabilised at around £2300 and has been there ever since , that makes me wonder just how much and if there will even be a price drop on the 5D4 next year , so I am left wondering buy another 5D3 from HDEW or DigitalRev at a good price and have done with it ? or wait for something that might not even happen with a price drop.

The 5D Mklll came out at £3000 body only, I bought one. The 5D MklV (or 3.4 as I prefer) doesn't have the value for me. The ISO I use as a wedding shooter only gives 1 stop extra dynamic range - regardless of which I've never had a dynamic range problem anyway. I can't see any high ISO improvement to noise on the dpreview or 'image comparimeter' websites, and that is at huge magnification as well.
Should one of my mklll's pack up I'll buy another Mklll whilst they are still around and at a fantastic price, then I'd wait for the new 24-105 and probably get that for personal use.

A high initial price clears inventory of old stock and it's certainly over priced compared to the cost price (in the UK at least).

When Canon released the 5DS and 5DSr last year they were £ 2,999 and £ 3,199 respectively. The 5DS dropped first to £ 2,799 whilst the 5DSr remained at its launch price. During 2016 the 5DS has dropped to £ 2,699 and the 5DSr to £ 2,899 so both cameras have lost £ 300 since launch.

If and only if that's a yard stick then the 5D MKIV may fall to £ 3,199 within a year, however the 5D MKIII has been selling at £ 2299 and even allowing for the yen increase over the £ since Brexit that would make it £ 2873 (20%) or similarly priced to the 5DSr. To me that's where its likely to go within a year if it doesn't Canon will see far less sales of this important camera because the fall in the yen doesn't explain the current really high price within the UK or Europe for that matter.

Canon knows early adopters will pay a premium, others the pocket rules the brain and more importantly the body is the entry into lenses purchases which have also gone up due to the strength of the yen so Canon could be seriously affected by declining sales within Europe (and Canada it seems).

Have made the decision and ordered another 5d3 at less then £1600 quid as opposed to £3500 its really a no brainer , I hope Canon feel the early adopters are worth it in the long run as they are losing people like me who would have gone in at a more reasonable price. Its a business decision at the end of the day and i can justify the increase in quality and features from my second camera (5D2) which will now be a 5d3 , i cannot justify the 5D4 personally and Im in the wedding and commercial business too - shame but hey ho - at least now i can stop having to put the dial back to where its supposed to be on my second camera lol

Keep an eye on Hdewcameras.. they had the 5Ds & r in fairly quickly after launch. if you can wait a month or so. Not the cheapest of all importers but they seem to be a decent firm.

(no connection, just a happy repeat customer)

Since Canon prefers a slow, evolutionary improvement in the camera bodies, lots of people skip over new models and wait for the next one.

I went from the 5D Mark 1 to the Mark 3. The Mark 4 has some new gadgets that are not required by my workflow, so I will skip it and hope that my Mark 3 lasts until the Mark 5 comes out. If it doesn't survive that long, there will be plenty of barely used Mark 3s on the market to replace it.

I'm happy that there are photographers who want to own the latest and greatest camera body and are willing to pay the introductory price. That helps Canon pay off the R&D investment quickly so they don't have to charge me as much when I'm ready to buy. :)

Glad you've come to a decision. I was sufficiently annoyed when, after studying a lot of reviews, I saw the mklV's apparent lack of progress (to me anyway) that I started researching the Nikon D810 with 24-120 lens. Slightly cheaper than a MklV. But, this has it's problems, I then looked at the D750, this has its problems, then a canon 6D....only has 1 cross type sensor despite its super noise and dynamic range. Bottom line is, the manufacturers probably make them all flawed intentionally...why would we ever buy another if we owned the perfect camera.
So for, the game's over, I have never been discontent with the Mklll (I was with the mkl and mkll), I shall focus on enjoying the Mklll now.
I'll tell you what I don't like, are those websites (left un-named) that say "the enthusiast will be happy with the Mklll but the discerning professional will swiftly upgrade to a MklV".......very very amateur and childlike psychology.

I was in the same boat, had €4000 ready to buy at what I expected to be €3700 In Ireland, The price came in at €4299 which although I could manage I don't think is worth the upgrade. I have just bought another 5D3 from Richmond cameras on ebay for €2000 including postage and Paypal's terrible currency exchange rates. Look I know its probably grey market but it has come with a so called 3 year warranty ( how good that is I don't know!!)
First thing I did was inspect it carefully and attach it to EOScount- It came with a zero shutter count. It all seems legit so I am quite happy. I did notice that the ebay seller has a 5dIV for £2999 sterling which for those in the UK might be worth it (grey market and the risks that go with that) I am just letting you know my experience and that I was happy with them.

Bought my 5D-III in Jun-2013 for ZAR 28,500
(this might have been lowest price for ZA)
and sold it in Jul-2016 for ZAR 21,000
(with only about 50,000 clicks, I shot a lot with my other 3 cameras)

The new 5D-IV is ZAR 54,000. I think a fair price would be in the range of ZAR 38,000-43,000.

I will get a 80D for now and buy a 5D-IV when the price is right. Unless the "6D Mark-II" blows me away.

Regarding the Mark-IV vs ~III... If you apply the same (professional) level of photographic technique with the ~IV as with the ~III then you will get a superior result with the ~IV at the end of the day (at the bare minimum you will have a 40% larger output.)

The 5D MklV is probably a better camera than the mark lll, though I'm not sure how much you'll see of that in the final print. From a business point of view dropping £2.5K on a trade in of one of my mklll's is not a viable option. Enjoy your mklV's everybody. I shall continue to enjoy my Mklll. I don't believe there is any camera out there to best the Mklll/lV for general purpose/low light photography.
