Canon EOS M2 lots of chrominance noise, even at low ISO (100)

I recently picked up a Canon EOS M2 kit with 22mm and 18-55mm.
I had my first real play with it yesterday which was a playground with my kids. Shooting conditions were a mixture of harsh sun and dappled shade.

Upon importing the images into Aperture 3, I found that the 100% crops showed a lot of chrominance noise (shadows were obviously the worst, but I can still see if on the skin tones of my kids (pale white skin) which were in sun and hence fairly well exposed. I was shooting in RAW at 1/250 (f3.5 to 7.1) and ISO at auto.

ISO ranged from 100 to 1600. Even at ISO100 on a pretty well exposed image, I can see what I would think was a lot of chrominance noise. I am comparing the RAW images to that of my primary camera which is a Canon 40D.

Is what I am seeing typical of the 18 MP sensor? I recall a lot of people complaining about the 7D having a lot of low ISO noise. Does the EOS M2 have the same problem, and is it something I just have to repair in post if I want to?

Thank-you

I don't see that issue, although I normally don't view RAW images in Aperture, I convert with DxO and store the JPGs in Aperture. But I keep the RAWs in another library as referenced files, I just had a look and the images look fine up to ISO 800, some noise is evident at 1600, and it's easily noticeable at 3200. But that's viewing shadow regions at 100%, in brighter areas it's only barely evident at ISO 3200.

If you are exposing properly and not letting your software adjust the image (Software can make a mess of things), you should not see any issues.

Cameras do get defective sensors, and sensors can go bad. Return the camera for a exchange, or if you bought it used, see if you can return it.

Hi everyone, sorry for slow response but I've been on holidays/break.
I purchased the M2 off eBay here in Australia for $390, so no returns.
It came with a new 22, new 18-55, new 90EX and the EF-m to EF adapter. Previous owner only used camera 2-3 times with the EF adapter but found it too cumbersome with his EF lenses so bought a 70D.

Figured for the price I got it that if I hate it I can break up the kit and still come out alright.

I've had trouble trying to figure out how to upload my pics here and keep them within size limits.

Over the last 2 weeks I've noticed that Aperture 3.5 on the home computer (OSX 10.9.5) seems to use a different RAW import version than my Mac Pro at work which runs Aperture 3.6
The home computer images look much more noisy than the same images on my work machine.

I've downloaded the latest DPP and found that only settin the chrominance slider to 6 in the NR panel cleans it all up without affecting detail too much. I find DPP hard to use/understand having used Aperture for so many years.

I have DXO optics 8 which doesn't support the M2. Will trial v10 and see what It does to the pictures during import.

I think I've been spoiled by what I would consider pretty "clean" raw input out of the 40D. I think what I consider well exposed with the M2 isn't quite right. Looking at my histograms, they're a little clustered to the left. Will work on my technique I think.

hmm. it should not be nosier than your 40D.

however keep in mind you are looking at a 10mp image and now looking at a 18mp image.

what are your camera jpg defaults? your raw converter could be picking those up and applying them to the raw file.

also turn off ALO and HTP if they are on as they will create more noise. if that is what you are concerned about.

you should be fine with having DPP chroma noise slider set to 2 .. 6 .. something else is up - check ALO and HTP. you should be able to tell in DPP if they are turned on or not - and/or check the camera.
