Guaranteed to cause night terrors in those dreamers who thought Firmware v.2.0.0 would make the R5 into the R5ii. No, boys and girls, they didn't give the R5 the R3, R7, R6ii autofocus. Take a deep breath. Put down the sharp objects. Everything is okay. Your R5 is still an amazing camera -- just not as amazing as click-baiting rumor sites might have promised.

I did not understand the 2 TB enhancement...

My guess is that it either didn’t work at all or capped the capacity to 1TB.
So you can buy a huuuuge CFe card and use up to 2TB of it.

I don't think updating the animal eye AF algorithms was such a big ask. Considering how random it still is and how poorly it tracks a moving dog even when the eyes and face are easy to detect. I wish they would have improved it just for the sake of completion with what is probably the last firmware update for the R5.

Maybe it means that exFAT filesystem cluster sizes larger than 512 KB weren't and still aren't supported, but now you can format a filesystem just on a 2 TB part of the card space, if otherwise the filesystem cluster size would be too large for the camera to work.

That assumes that the animal eye AF improvements are all in the software. Perhaps there's another circuit or some other mechanical feature that makes the later cameras so much better. I don't know the answer -- but given the level of dissatisfaction among R5 owners, maybe Canon isn't fixing it using Firmware because it can't be fixed using Firmware.

Normally a full number version release would have lots of changes/improvements/features…. Maybe they think that squishing error code 70 is worthy… bug fixes should be 1.9.5 imho but I guess they didn’t ask me

I didn’t expect changes at this stage in the lifecycle so it is good to still see bug fixes at least

Agreed. Canon can't push the 6K new camera if they update the perfectly good R5. Remember when Canon only updated every 10 to 15 years? The current batch of users are too used to bright and shinny rather than focusing on the craft in my view.

So, this all gets to be the people we know and the circles we run in and what individual people are trying to accomplish....but, other than this forum, I am only aware of extremely satisfied R5 owners, including myself. Matter of fact, the refrain I hear most often is that R5 owners are planning to skip a generation. I'll wait to see what the R5ii has to offer, but I could see myself falling into that camp.

Seems odd that they went with a major release version for this when the R3 got a patch release with seemingly the same updates. Nice to see that they might have finally fixed the lock up issue. I lost a ton of confidence in the R5 after I had lockups occur in situations that I’d never get another chance at.

I don\'t know why somebody should be dissatified with the AF of the R5. It\'s just marvellous. If I compare my R5 with my R6 Mark II in terms of AF, the differences in terms of speed and accuracy are not so different. Everybody should keep in mind that the R5 showed up mid 2020, means on technology of 2019 and before. You can\'t seriously expect that Canon can keep up to date the R5 for an eternity, regarding the fact that the new AI technologies are evolving every felt second. My guess is that the hardware can simply not support the features of newer cameras. (Machine learning etc.)
I agree that we need to wait and see what the tech. specs. of the R5 Mark II are to decide if it worth an upgrade.

Me too. Unless the R5ii has some serious real upgrades, I won't be in a rush to buy.

They just don't have to do that... Sad for us, but quite logical from industrial pov...
They must provide bug fixes but they have no obligation to do firmware updates that upgrade cameras performances in order to be closer to other current/newer models or next gen cameras.
Even OMD promised they will, but reality is different, they just can't !

No sound settings like those from the R6II. Definitely not getting them if they didn't come in 2.0.0. Were they really so much to ask for? Guess you gotta drop 4 grand on a new body for tiny QoL improvements that should be trivial to add to older cameras.
