Very nice. How much is the 1dx2 getting used and for what?

So whenever I'm on a news assignment, my 1DX Mark II has my EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II on it. I primarily use the 1DX Mark II as my wide camera on assignment, since the R5 can crop significantly in on long glass and give me more reach. Often at fires the 1DX Mark II takes the most pictures to be honest, since the most compelling news images are typically going to be closer to the action and at a wider focal length so you can see the scope and the setting.

It also happens I far prefer working with the RF 70-200 over the huge EF 70-200, so pretty much anytime I need a 70-200 I'm going to use the RF on the R5, leaving my 1DX Mark II to cover my wider focal lengths.

Overall my 1DX Mark II has become my second body for paid work, and my EOS R5 has become my primary camera for paid and personal work. Anytime I don't need a second camera, I just use my EOS R5 thanks to its higher quality and higher megapixels, with an added bonus that it's far lighter and far smaller. Being small and light has been a huge plus when I'm out with family or traveling, and it has made a world of difference when it comes to what I feel comfortable bringing to travel.

Thanks very much for this helpful assessment. I'm debating whether to keep or sell my 1DX2 since as a second body for hobby shooting, hiking travelling etc. it is just so big and heavy but the return on a sale is probably minimal so why sell a good camera. I fully concur with the wide use. I also like the video from the 1DX2 and am not sure the R5 would be a full replacement - do you do any video?

If I was you Jack, for your uses I’d sell the 1DX II and get the R5, the R5 video is noticeably better than the 1DX II.

We don’t buy these toys thinking of return value, even if we are on a budget, we get them for what they do for us and I honestly believe the R5 would suit your shooting and uses better.

Thanks Scott! Always forthright and dependable - I was not expecting your reply but certainly appreciate it. Please expand on whether there are serious negatives on the video side since that's the one area I'm not sure about. I've shot primarily in 4K60 and am quite interested in doing more video and don't want to step back in that realm. I have had many jobs demanding my time this winter and so have not yet bought the R5 but fully intended to get it fairly soon, but should I unload the 1DX2 or keep it as a second camera (I think only I can ultimately answer that of course) and I've also wondered about waiting for at least some better rumors regarding an R1. Since you're shooting both you can certainly identify any items where the R5 has you saying why Canon why? I'm well aware of all the plusses of the R5 already based on my shooting.

Hi Jack, i am no video expert but from what I can see basic 4K video is not an R5 strong point because of the sampling, but HQ 4K is much higher IQ than the 1DX II. The R5 does 120 in 4K too and retains AF in all those modes, which the 1DX II doesn’t. But if your are only shooting short clips then the 8K is going to give you substantially more options for birding and wildlife etc with the ability to maintain AF, and give you options to downsize and or crop.

Knowing what I do about your shooting priorities, and that isn’t much but more than nothing, I’d say you are a prime candidate to go all in on RF, sell the 1DX II and 6D II and get an R5 and R6, or an R5 now and wait and see what comes out in a year or so. The 400 DO will work effortlessly on the R’s as will the 11-24 whilst giving you easy ND and other filter options via adapters. The value of the 1 series are going to drop like a brick because they are moving away from the desirable ‘top end’ despite some limitations, to a tool few specialists actually need.

Indeed you don’t need any lens purchases but could gravitate towards the RF’s as you feel the desire.

My only issue with MILC’s is the EVF, I can’t get 100% comfortable with them and the truth is as I rarely crop much I simply don’t need 45mp 99% of the time. But I don’t own the R5 yet, I’ve just used borrowed ones a fair bit, I simply can’t justify the ‘need’ at this point in time.

Scott, your comments align with my thoughts 100%. I can see walking around with a 1DX2 soon feeling much like driving a 1979 Cadillac.
