The truth is the are only four group of people who care about what brand of camera we are using; other photographers, our dealers, our insurance agents and the security guards who keep saying " you can't bring that thing in here"

To everyone else they are all just big black heavy cameras that cost 100 times more than their cell phones.

;D
Good one!

Prices between them are pretty much a wash when you look at the whole package, Body, lens, flash, and software.

Its easy to be misled by just looking at the price of the body. For example, Nikon Charges close to $300 for software that Canon includes free.

BUt why are we comparing the MKIII to the D800? The D800 is a damn good studio camera and MKIII is a damn good allround camera. Both companies have decided to target two different markets and the pricing is reflected in the markets.

It's not that simple to say one is for studio and the other all purpose. . . . they BOTH have video and they both have almost everything else equal except MP. . . . the noise difference is understandable, and may not be even a factor. They are BOTH good for landscape too, AND the D800 may also be "forcing" some MF users to thank God while they switch to Nikon's MP king.

So, never mind this D800 for studio and mkIII for all purpose "no nesense" point . . . with all due respect.

Good one!

People often come up to me and ask what camera I am using. The next question is "How Many Megapixels" If my sole purpose was to impress them, I'd get a D800.

This is common when I am out walking around where there are others.

Just think out loud.....
They have to be watching the Nikon US legal department as they try to figure out a way to rise the prices in the US. They probably won't be able to affect per-orders prices only halt delivery at the end of the month and then reprice.

If they do so, Canon will mostly like figure out a way to make the prices match without reduce the actual camera price say a $200 credit toward any L lens costing $1500 or more.

I believe that both companies knew what are the specs of the 5DMIII & D800 as both cameras were in the hands of beta testers. But Canon gave Nikon a strong 'punch' by not pricing the 5DMIII close to the MII. I suspect that Nikon priced D800 aggressively to compete with the 5DMIII at what they thought it to be priced around $3000.

So Nikon Marketing are getting slapped right now as they see the strong 5DMIII demand despite the high price tag. So every Nikon D800 sold (@ $3000) will be considered a LOSS, in Nikon books.

Just my thoughts...

Think about what else you must buy to use a body. Nikon makes a ton of money on lenses, batteries, flashes, they even charge you for software that Canon gives free. And ... they charge you again after a major upgrade.

Its like printer and ink, sell the body low, but the lenses high and make as many add-ons as possible.
