In this patent application (2024-099414), Canon is showing off some interesting embodiments to some inner zoom / inner focus lenses for both full frame and crop cameras. Big R&D companies like Canon patent a lot of things that never see the light of day as real products. I'm especially doubtful about unique general-purpose (i.e., not VR) RF-S lenses, if Canon is content to outsource that to the third parties (which I think they should, without restrictions). I can see Canon making mark II versions of the 18-45 and 18-150 kit lenses if they can make them cheaper, but I'm not holding my breath for the 16-60 f/2.8 IS USM Z that's on the CR roadmap (even though I'd probably be first in line to preorder that one).
