Why are these lenses so expensive refurbished? Most other brands sell their refurb products for a considerable discount yet canon ask for a premium. How come?

Because Canon isn't giving you what Adorama or B&H are doing, which is tidying up well-used gear and selling it back to you -- Canon is giving you like new gear with warranty.

And it's not that expensive at all. B&H used gear with the best (least) wear/tear runs in excess of these Canon refurb prices. You can beat the Canon refurb prices with dinged up B or C grade lenses, sure, but who wants those?

I think these deals are a steal, but I'm always waiting for that 1-2x per year commercial solar eclipse moment of [big sale, say 15-20% off] + [free shipping] + [the specific lens I want is in stock] and then I get in.

But an effectively new (say) 135L for $700-750 sells out in 60 seconds or so. It's like buying concert tickets for a show. Poof, they're gone. I've often wondered if larger houses like B&H and Adorama, larger eBay resellers, etc. are the jerks doing the buying.

Oh, I see what the fuss is. This particular restock isn't a sale on refurbished lenses, it's just a restock at normal refurbished prices.

100% avoid, everyone. Why pay these prices when you know everything will be 10-20% off 4-5 times a year?

Just go to canonpricewatch.com and set an auto-alert for the lens + price you'd be happy paying, and it will notify you the second those conditions are met (usually at a restock + sale event). Easy peasy. Just be prepared to sprint to your computer to buy it when that happens. :D

Refurbished is still an excellent deal even with the further discounts offered periodically. The extra discounts make it difficult when they have limited stock and as said, sell out sometimes within minutes of being posted.

Example right now, Adorama is selling a used 135F2 at $799 in "E" condition whereas Canon's refurbished advertises the identical price. I'd rather go with a lens that looks brand new with a warranty than a used lens without. Wouldn't you?
