Canon way to work with firmware

One thing i will never understand, how canon work with firmware updates.

For example, build in GPS in 6d is a wonderful idea, but for some strange reason it eats battery even when camera is off , and they made a workaround only in 1dxmkii!

Or setting shutter speed low level and auto iso range i saw in 6d, while they've could add such simple feature in 5dmkii.

Looks like history knows only one example of feature adding procedure, 7d update...

Hopefully we get the 1DXII's gps features and 4K along with autofocus and bug fixes to match up with the new Nikon aps-c camera

That depends on what you expect from a GPS. If you shutdown for a "long" time (a few days) a GPS devices, it will take some time to "sync" with satellites to be able to calculate the proper position (you may speed it up downloading actual satellite data from another source, i.e. the Internet, if your devices allows it). Thereby if you want to turn on your camera, shoot immediately and geotag that image, GPS needs to be kept up-to-date, even when the camera is "off".

It is true a camera stored in a place when it can't receive a GPS signal may just waste battery power. If the 6D GPS can be turned off fully, that's the sensible thing to do - remembering it will take some time next time to start up.

the best way to save the battery is detach the battery when it is switched off.

Canon makes firmware updates when a significant number of users report a problem.

If GPS runs a battery down in 2 or 3 weeks, that is a issue. If it takes 2 or three months, Canon does recommend removing a battery if your camera is not going to be used for a long period like that.
