Canon's Retro EOS RE-1: What to Expect Later This Year

Are we still watching out for this camera. It sounds great. Of course we need matching retro lenses a la Nikon Z SE. This means repurporsed/repackaged RF 28 pancake, RF 35 1.8 (this really needs a version 2--another topic for discussion), RF 85 F2--all retro styled, all metal/full metal. the only one i didn't mention is the RF 50 1.8... that lens is merely repackaged EF 50mm 1.8 STM which was a re-hash of the mark II which is a rehash of the mark I. In other words, that lens need to be put out to pasture. But it's compact so I get it. If they do offer that, don't charge more than $150 for it.. please.

That simply isn't true.

Enough to justify the Z fc in 2021 and the Z f in 2023. There are rumors of a ZfcII being announced later this year to replace the Z fc using the same basic internals of the Z50II.

Apparently the retro fashion was big in Japan for quite a while before it hit the rest of the world.

There's an 8-year gap between 2013 and 2021. That was an eternity in digital camera product cycles during the 2010s.

I think the changing market conditions (i.e. the same conditions that led to the success of the Fuji X100V in 2020) had more to do with the existence of the Z fc and Z F than any initial success of the Df.

Not into what was, but if Canon wanted to honor their 70's flagship camera, it would be the "professional" F-1 not the consumer AE-1. I expect the niche category of cameras to be a phase and short lived.

Most of the Pros from the F-1 era are dead (or in full time supervised care nursing facilities).

On the other hand, millions of kids who lusted after an AE-1 back in the late 1970s and early 1980s without ever laying their hands on one are now in their 60s and 70s and are in the demographic most likely to spend real money on dedicated cameras...

Canon could also charge to “unlock” FD lens software correction. This could be one of the first implementations of the “pay to play” business model.

If not in-camera FD lens correction, Canon could alternately add profiles to the Digital Photo Professional app, possibly with a paywall there, also.

Shhhh! Don't give them any ideas!

Whats the deal with this? I have an a7cII but miss Canon colors/ergos/menus. And there are enough STM lenses for me to scrape by with (28-70/2.8, 35/1.8, 14-35/L, 24-240)

Just a bummer they don't have a modern sensor in the ~3x MP range. But the 24MP is good and the Mk1 45MP sensor seems to be going for cheap

I switched to Sony a7riii from xt3 from 6d from 5dii* two years ago and hate the colors- love the resolution, I’m pining* for this re1 to bring me back to canon even if it’s with adapted ef. Hbu?
