It is cold where I am at (upper 20's) I may take my camera outside and let it set for a bit to see if I can reproduce this on mine.

I installed 1.0.2 and today my issue appears to be resolved. I was out in much colder temperatures and for much longer than when I first noticed the drain. Battery performances not problematic. No changes to settings or configuration.Interesting, thank you for reporting back. I suspect there is some sort of sensor that is underreporting available power or these batteries are not great, I'm hoping for the former here, I have 6 of these things that I would rather not have to send back.
This is good to hear. I plan to take a break in a week or 2 and planned to take my cameras out on a road trip.I installed 1.0.2 and today my issue appears to be resolved. Update, but not much of one. I received this response today in an email, “We took test pictures/videos for more than an hour in cold conditions and we also checked inside the camera for corrosion/loose connections and everything was normal. We are requesting that you send in your batteries/lens as well as any other accessories used during the time of the issue”.CPS currently has my Mk II looking into this issue. Will report back if camera comes back and works in the cold (and if it doesn’t).
I am sure they test below that temperature, but it is indeed strange that even the R1 has the same official operating temperature rating of 32*F (0*C). The Z8/Z9 are rated up to -10°C/14°F. Mmmhh.Looking at the specs, it seems Canon does not recommend anything below 32*F (0*C). I bet they won't test below that.
I suppose that is reality and what I should expect as an official response. Just tough to swallow when my Mark I doesn’t bat an eye at full nights in -50F. Appears I’ll be having mark ii for sale; what a shame.Looking at the specs, it seems Canon does not recommend anything below 32*F (0*C). I bet they won't test below that.
I feel for you. I stopped updating here because my problem is all over the place. In a nutshell the camera is not consistently reliable in cold weather, however. Some days it is ok, but there seems to be a threshold level where it can swing either way based on overall conditions. My conversation with Canon has more or less resolved with them telling me that I can keep them updated with new findings, but there is no service advisory for the issue. I know two other people who have opened service tickets for this. I love the camera, but it is unfortunate that I'm not able to have as much confidence in it as I had with the R5. My outings are casual these days, but if I was out on a mission critical shoot I would likely grab the R5 at this point.I sent my camera back to Canon for warranty repair. My issue was so bad that just putting the camera in the fridge for 30 minutes with a full battery would generate the error. I photograph polar bears and aurora on the shores of Hudson Bay with temperatures down in the -50s C, but this error happens when temperatures don't even drop to freezing.
If I removed the battery from the camera, it was still at 93% charge. If I plugged in a USB charging cable, I would get a Battery Full message within minutes, but the camera would still not operate—indicating the change or charge battery message.
They replaced the printed circuit board and upgraded the firmware to 1.0.2. I put the camera in the fridge for 30 minutes to test the repair. When I took it out, it operated perfectly. I placed it on the shelf to warm to room temperature and when I turned it back on, I got the same error.
I need to do further testing over the next few months. I'm back up to the Arctic in mid-February but I'll be bringing my old 5Ds along as a backup just in case the R5ii craps out.
Update Pt 2… camera and accessories are being returned with no corrective actions taken. The Mark II is essentially a paperweight to me if it can’t function in the cold, so I’ll be looking to unload it. Meanwhile, my R5 has been running flawlessly down to -45F, sustained, over the previous week.Update, but not much of one. So, I’m sending in 6 LP-E6P batteries, 2 lenses, and battery grip. (All 6 batteries work fine in the Alaska cold in my r5 mark I).
If this was a controlled test, shouldn’t they be able to provide the temperature of the body at testing and ambient temperature? Stating they tested in “cold” conditions seems beyond vague. I’ve never gotten 30 minutes per battery at 0 degrees F.. hopefully I can get their testing conditions.
Repair Complete Comment:
Your product has been examined we tested both batteries separately in the camera with your lens connected and they were both normal. We also tested both batteries in the battery grip with the lens attached and they still worked normally. We are sending back a paper from the owners manual with information on how long the batteries should last with which settings. The unit was cleaned and checked. If you have this problem again, please send in a video of the issue as well as any additional information you can provide. Product functions were confirmed. Have a nice day and thanks for choosing Canon!
A sadly very typical answer by service departments. I've had exactly the same answer by Leica (twice!).Update Pt 2… camera and accessories are being returned with no corrective actions taken.
