I had the $1799 ready for the 7D2 but I found a mint condition 5D3 for $2200 so I pulled the trigger. It's amazing how the price drops just before a highly anticipated release. I am very happy to be shooting the 5D3 along with my new used 1D4

The 5D3 is indeed a very good camera. I even do use it more then the 1Dx.
Basic sports and wildlife can easily be done with the 5D3. It has a very good and reliable AF. And of course it's FF, which will give you high IQ photos.
However, I even did order a 7D2 for using next to those cameras. When speed is really important then you will find the 6fps of the 5D3 low compared to the 12fps of the 1Dx. So having a good backup solution if any of those cameras would fail, I ordered the 7D2.
If I only would buy ONE camera then it would be the 5D3, as this is a very nice general purpose camera.

I've seen new ones drop to about $2300-$2400, but they are gray market. I paid $2750 for my 5D MK III two years ago from Adorama, so getting $2200 out of a camera I've used for two years would be great.

The selling price of a camera model starts to drop as users sense a new model is coming in 2-3 months. Used ones may very well drop to $1800 after Christmas, depending on how low the price of new ones drops, and on peoples perception that a replacement is coming.
