My comments come from the review by 'The Digital Picture' site. There is no issue with focus shift IMO.
I did 10 000s of shots with this fantastic lens and have still not found any problems.
I did a test which You find here:
There is a lot of talk about focus shift of the RF 100L macro. I have used the lens without any issues and have been wondering a long time what's that talk is about.
So I have made four series of pictures with changing aperture.
Subject is a dead hummingbird moth I found and which is pefect for a "real life" test.
I put the camera on a tripod with a macro rail to focus, connected it to my PC. Focus set to manual, IS off.
Electronic shutter and 10s delay to prevent shake. After focussing I didn't touch the camera and set everything via PC.
The focus is set on the eye like in real life by...

That one looks indeed like a nice replacement, but I really want an electronically controlled aperture. I mess the manual aperture up waaaaay too often with the probe lensI need a fair bit more info, but I'm seriously interested in the recently announced Mitakon 55mm f/2.8 1-5X Macro Lens, which might take the place of the old Canon MP-E 65mm F/2.8 1- 5x Macro.
I'd much prefer that too, but it's probably less of an issue with an extreme macro lens like this (ie it can't focus to infinity and so not really a hand-held portrait lens etc), which is likely to be used on a tripod (and maybe a rail as well). And I can forgive quite a bit at that price, if the optics are good. That one looks indeed like a nice replacement, but I really want an electronically controlled aperture. It is nice to have, but with the mp-e, I spend a lot of time holding the depth of field preview button. That one looks indeed like a nice replacement, but I really want an electronically controlled aperture. I mess the manual aperture up waaaaay too often with the probe lens![]()
Outside of the house, all my MP-E usage is handheldI'd much prefer that too, but it's probably less of an issue with an extreme macro lens like this (ie it can't focus to infinity and so not really a hand-held portrait lens etc), which is likely to be used on a tripod (and maybe a rail as well).
