The Ozarks
All this continued talk about the end of the DSLR and mirrorless taking over the camera world has me wondering what this monster of a camera will be named.

I predict the flagship mirrorless camera will be simply named "Mark I".
The new mount that will make us all cry at the EF funeral will be the "20/20".

Anybody else care to take a pithy stab at this? :)

I expect any mirrorless body to keep the same basic number, but in place of say 5D, it could be 5M or 5DM or for the more likely hybrid, perhaps 5H or 5DH. Canon did not change the 1D when it went to FF, but added a s suffix and later dropped the s when the 1.3 crop went away.

I'd expect a hybrid model to appear before any purely mirrorless.

I think, rather, I'd say that they changed the suffix from S to X.

Since the APS-C cameras already have their naming convention sorted, I'd like to see the FF mirror (ahem) the DSLR FF names.

6D-M: entry level FF MILC, MPix somewhere between the other two

5D-M: Portrait/Landscape body, high Mpix count and 4K video with CLog.

1D-M: Sports/Journalism body, mid 20s Mpix count, high shutter speed, high speed video (120-240 FPS 4K). This would also be a full sized body, since small size isn't something the users of this camera need/want

Except the rumors are stating it's the EF mount ... ::)

1, 5, 6 and 7 are all taken, but it really depends on where in the ergonomic food chain canon's going to put it.

Assuming it's single digit ergonomics, 8 or 9D IMO would make the most sense.

They could also go with 3, since it hasn't been used since the film days and it had unique features to the other bodies.

Re: Naming Canon's future mirrorless monster family.
Simplicity and Tradition are important for the "brand".
FF could easily be xM as in 1M, 5M, 6M...
APSc could become xxM as in 10M, 50M, 60M
Low end Rebels could become xxxM
The only weird current number is the fantastic EOS 7D. Just make it FF with high speed frame rates and automatic recognition of EFs lenses and perhaps digital zoom for the Birders

I will buy a 6M on announcement day...

I agree that tradition matters, but the APS-C cameras already have a naming convention- Mx (M3, M5, M6). Simply reversing the letter and number would be incredibly confusing.
