I think this is somehow the "terror" of today’s consumer electronics market, that we, the consumers, have to be persuaded to buy a new item each year or so.
Therefore a lot of companies release "new" products maybe every six to twelve months to tempt us.
But if you look closely, the "new" products only get just a new design and maybe some minor tweaks and the rest is coming from the marketing department.
Having said this in general about consumer electronics I take a closer look at cameras:
If I buy a camera or a lens I normally expect them to last and work properly for about 5 to 10 years. Technically.
Do they still fulfill my expectations and needs (or what the marketing department wants me to believe my needs are) after this time? That's another point.
So normally I am not in a hurry to replace something I've chosen carefully.
But that is - of course - in opposition to what many companies want us to do. And there are different ways to get us spending our money.
I rely much more in a thoughtfully and more stable portfolio and therefore replacement philosophy.
But I expect bigger steps forward at successors. Here the 5D3 and 7D2 seemed to me a little bit too conservative, but still good improvements over their predecessor.
Look at 4K video. Big hype. A lot of people want it, think they need it. Why?
NOT me! With full HD, 1080p I have enough resolution. With 1080p I already can see all the pores and spots in the actors’ faces. I don't want to see them. Sometimes I think 1080p and 4K was only developed to push the makeup artists to new limits. And us to buy new TVs although we're (at least me) are pleased with the one we have.
So, Canon, please don't do as Nikon does. But do it your way a little bit better for us
