Most of my shooting now is tripod close-up/macro utilizing my 180 macro mounted on a dated 1Ds3.
I also use Canon Utility Software tethered to my computer using the LV function with the automatic
focus changes with the arrow gizmos which I then use to stack images using PS CC.
1000 pixel example with some artifacts.

Being an anal retentive SOB...are there any of the newer cameras that will cough out better IQ?

Same question, same answer. Yes.

But the differences will be modest.

Your type so shooting is what the 5DSR was made for, it will give you higher IQ at the same output size but not at the per pixel level because the pixels are so much smaller and tech truthfully hasn't moved far between the 1DS MkIII and the 5DSR.

For the same print size the 5DSR will return higher IQ. The 5DMkIV will almost certainly follow the 1DXMkII and offer more DR and better color than the 1DSMkIII as well as a healthy resolution increase.

For most people these differences will not amount to much, for a self admitted anal retentive the differences will be huge.

Personally in your specific shooting situation I'd recommend looking at the Nikon D810 and Micro-Nikkor 200 f4, if the majority of my shooting was as your example, in that case the Nikon would be the way I'd go.
