Ok, I'm about to buy the 5D Mark II (can't afford Mark III), but have a slight pause and need some advise...

Should I go for the 5D Mark II or 7D?

I've only shot with the Rebel XSI up to this point.

I'm an amateur but likes shooting landscapes, portraits, and perhaps get into weddings later on when I get bettter.

Any suggestions??

Sounds like your shooting interest are better served by a FF purchase over crop.

I have had a 7D for about 2 years now and the love affair is still going strong. fantastic for sports, wildlife, and fast moving kids. I recently bought a 5D2 as my entry point into FF and it is a beautiful solution for everything else where speed (AF and fps) and reach (crop sensor) are not my primary considerations.

Neither one is a bad decision, just depends on how you want to apply the tool to the situation.

agreed. I love my 7D (even though it's up for sale!) because I shoot bands live, and music videos. It meets both needs excellently. From the sounds of your needs, full frame will be more important than speed. I'd go for the 5D2.

If you find that your camera has some limitation to what you need (e.g. Full Frame), upgrade to the next camera with that feature. Otherwise I'd suggest to keep shooting with your existing camera. Manufacturer launch new body faster than you can expect and you will soon experience the same issue again.

Also consider how you shoot weddings. If you shoot a lot of weddings and capture moments in a sort of documentary style, 7d might be good. The 5d mark ii just isn't fast enough to capture kids, dances and other moments while shooting weddings.

Although the 5d mark ii would be great for landscapes and such. It depends on how many weddings you are shooting and if you shoot them documentary style rather than only posed portraits, the 7d might be what you want.

Look at the total package and see which you can afford. You will want different lenses for the 7D than for a FF body due to the 1.6 crop.

You will need a external flash for a ff body, they do not have built-in flashes. The 7D can control a off camera flash wirelessly, the 5D would need one to control a off camera flash.

They share the same battery, thats good news.

They both use compact flash.

Once you have a package cost, select what works for you.

I never understood how people with 5D 2's shot music gigs. I like to rattle off hundreds of shots, and catch all the little moments, and the 5D2 just never seemed fast enough for it. I guess others are more skilled than me, because the results are certainly there. Either way, I am looking forward to rocking the 5D3 in the pit in a couple of weeks...
