Good evening!
Tried to update the firmware on my R5 Mark II to Version 1.0.2 (I did this for several times in the last decades)
Eos Utility did not allow to "downgrade" the Firmware (screenshot attached). Tried to redownload the FW from Canon DE three times.
Tried it via Memory card. Update was completed. BUT: Now the display shows an X in an red circle with "Err" below. It does not work anymore.
Can I try to do something or must I send it to Canon?

Thank you

That stinks, can you recall what the conditions were when you did the firmware update? Such as, you had only 1 card in the camera or both, had a lens on the body or no lens, etc. Just in case some physical condition went sideways. It may help others avoid this.

R5 MK II with SD-Card inside, CF-card removed. The RF100mm 2.8 Macro was attached. No button pressing, no moving of the body, no switches were touched when the Update was running.
Received critizism from Canon Service company, that I´ve tried to update by card when the Canon Eos Utility program shows an error. Well, I thought, if it is not working, this will be shown by the body too. So my fault.
I believe Canon will find the problem and solve it.

Thank you for posting that. I am not sure what you could or should have done with that error. I am sure they can fix it, they likely have some method of connecting to the camera and just loading the firmware. Too bad they don't share that with the community, would save a lot of time and headache for people in your situation.

I got about the same trouble than XL+ : when updating the firmware with a SD card, from 1.0.1, it was impossible to do it as there was then a pop-up message - as on your screenshot but on the R5 II screen - that it was impossible to downgrade the firmware to an older version than the one which was installed. I've subsequently reformatted (something to do and well mentioned in the Canon guidelines ) my SD card. After that, a new attempt was successful without any trouble when using my reflex.

As you, it's a long time ago that I started to update canon firmwares - the 1st was with a EOS 350D... - and I never got such a mess: something to do with Canon itself I fear...

Hello, I had the exact same issue when attempting to install the FW via Camera Connect. I saw on another forum to simply remove both cards (if using both) and attempt without the cards, this will prompt an error because it is looking for cards. After this, insert only the SD card (not type B) and then it will proceed with the transfer. I tried it and it worked for me. Odd bug, or bugs I should say. After the FW install, NONE of my assignable buttons that I registered to prompt 'subject to detect' would work, which was frustrating. I ended up doing a factory reset and that solved the issue, at least for now!

Just upgraded via EOS Utility having failed to do so from either card, which is my usual procedure. Annoying as I don't know whether there is a bug in the camera or what.

Update:
I got my camera back on Monday. The newer firmware has been installed. I managed it to get my body fixed free of charge - first Canon wanted me to pay for this repair as they argued I did update it not by using Eos Utility software.
I customized everything like I did before (using the advice from bird photographer Mr. Wegener)
Today, I went outside to get some shots. But what a horror! The AF is just looking for sharpness in the lower left corner, I can not get sharpness anywhere else than on the left lower corner. No matter which AF mode I use or which AF field I choose. The body just focusses on the left lower corner where the small AF-squares jump around along the viewfinder border. I did an reset - but without success.
The camera is slowly starting to annoy me.....

Nevertheless, I wish all forum participants a happy new year!

What settings do you have for AF?

Well, I tried a lot of different settings yesterday:
Servo AF,
Auto in AF cases (also case Autochar. +1) and , and because of the named problem: Manual with tracking sensitivity -2 and Acc/dec Tracking also -2;
Eye detection on and off (did not react on me);
Enabled and disabled certain AF Areas. Also in Spot AF (also that one with the door lock symbol)- where AF tracking should be disabled, the small AF Points are active in the lower left corner. (First fixed to some point, after 1-2 seconds the AF Square start jumping around on the viewfinder border)
Tried with three RF lenses (RF 400mm, 100mm Macro and 70-200 2.8) and EF 600mm Mark II. Same behavior.

A reset to normal settings did not stop this strange behavior.
I will send it back to Canon repair center (I have written to the technican who contacted me to get more information on my earlier problem with the Firmware Upgrade today). I hope, I will get an answer promptly by Canon.

Feedback from the Canon Repair Center: The autofocus works as it should. My problems cannot be reproduced, the camera was sent back to me.
I was told that only the new original batteries can be used in the Eos R5 II. I used only these, I have 4 of them.
Let's see if the problem is gone now. I hope.

Hope dies last - to own an fully functional R5 Mark II body. Bird shooting on Sat/Sun (RF 400mm 2.8) in sunny conditions about 10°C - the problem appeared again.
I identified the problem: If I use fully charged original R5 II batteries, everything works. But if the energy status from the batteries goes down to 2 stripes on the battery indicator (~40%) the phenomenon appears again. I´ve inserted my other two fully charged baterries - and the behavoir is again normal.
Canon gets my body this time with the batteries to check this. After 350-400 shots, an battery exchange should not be necessary (as my older R5 lasted more than four times the shooting capacity of my newer body at the same shooting).
