Hi,

I've been shooting my R1 for a couple of weeks and have had an issue shooting stills in hot weather lying on concrete in an extreme environment (shooting fast action water polo in 35c plus). The camera is great and we are shooting 600Gb+ on a weekend. Has anyone else had this occur? The camera returns to normal when you sit in the shade for a while and doesn't show this problem when shooting in the shade or cooler conditions. Interestingly, I haven't had the issue with the R5 Mkii yet.

Cheers

Shane

I was sitting in my house today, about 70 degrees F, and shot a 10 minute video in 4k 120fps just to try to get the camera to overheat. I managed to get to 6 bars before stopping the video and switching back to stills. The camera quickly cooled back down to 3 bars and stayed there while I shot several stills. Reading this makes me concerned about the warmer months when I will be shooting in high heat and in direct sunlight. Does the camera shut down on you or do/did you stop at a certain number of bars on the temp gauge? If so, how many bars and about how long did it take to get there?

Initially I noticed the alert and retreated to the shade and the camera cooled down in a few minutes. The second time it shutdown and I gave it a few minutes in the shade and the issue didn’t return. It was a 35C day so about 95f. Probably much hotter lying down on teh concrete where the issues occurred. The issue didn’t happen when I was standing or seated so I suspect the radiated heat from the concrete was a contributing factor. Hope this helps.

It does, thank you for the explanation.

Hi Shane I bought the Bgr-20 battery grip for the R5 II, it overheated and is with Canon, they confirmed that the grip blocks the air and being left handed they say that I blocked the exhaust. The cards were extremely hot on the right. Suggestion is return the grip, Iam just waiting for the kit. That was at 3pm in 36 degrees centigrade. My R5 with a grip has never overheated even in 42 degree heat.

The R1 does not have an external grip like the R5M2, nor does it have ventilation ports. It is a single piece body. I am really concerned with the R1 when I start shooting in warmer weather. I am hoping to get into shooting NASCAR races and some of those will be crazy hot, especially on asphalt tracks.

Thanks for posting your experiences. I haven't had the issue with my R5ii with the grip. Just the R1. I think it is due to a combination of the high ambient temperatures and the amount of precapture I use when shooting water polo. I shot three games the other day with no issues when the temperature was 30C. Cheers

I shot 4700 pictures in an hour, I may have given the second chip too much thinking and the high temperatures here may have been too much.

Had the overheating issue on R1 too, it shutdown on me in a hot day. Changed the "Auto Power Off Temp" setting in the last tab of the first menu item (Red with white camera icon on it) to "High" and it never happened again and the camera doesn't seem to get too hot either, shot all day long in very hot weather. It looks like the default setting at "Standard" is to sensitive. Also found out that high speed cards heat up a lot during continuous shooting especially if you are using pre-cont. shooting. Basically the info indicated that higher the write speed warmer the memory card become thus increasing camera temp and causing shut down. My card is Lexar Diamond 512 Gb, 1900 Mb/s read, 1700 Mb/s write.

I shot about 30 images outside it was 79 degrees and i noticed that i had 6 white bars in the temp gauge. I called canon and it was suggested I carry a white towel and put it over the camera. I asked if he was kidding considering it is the flagship camera and cost $6,300. Camera was not even warm to the touch, crazy, i just received a label from cps and will send it in although i am sure they wont find anything wrong with the camera.

Is what you have observed repeatable? Firing off 30 shots is pretty easy. Where you doing anything else with the camera prior?

All I can say is I have fired off thousands of shots with my R1 at room temperature (~68 F) and I've only seen a single bar twice, both times it was as I was tinkering with the camera settings, so lots of shots and lots of menu time.

If you see 6 bars after 30 shots repeatedly, I would look to send the camera in for repair or return. That is not normal in my experience.

I am having the exact same issue and it is repeatable

Very light use in direct sun / warm conditions . It is about 80 in Sebring Florida right now.
After about 5-10 minutes the heat gauge will come on and start to rise as long as its in the sun. If you go in shade . cover it the heat gauge will go down / disapear after a few minutes.

I continued to use through the weekend while using a white towel on top. The gauge did not come on when there is a white towel on it. The only time it came back was when the towel slipped off and was shooting in direct sun. I used the camera hard. I also changed cards.

I had another meet yesterday in 70+* weather and had no heat issues, even in direct sunlight but I had precapture turned off. Precapture seems to have a lot of impact on heat, which makes sense, especially for my use case. When shooting a tack event I will select a runner and half-press the shutter release for many seconds while waiting for the start, if precapture was on it would be taking shots this whole time. Next meet I shoot in this situation I will turn it on to see the difference.
