Serial number dates

Can I date a Canon 100-400 by the serial number?

There is no list of dates versus serial numbers that I've seen. Many lenses had a date code on them, so finding that is your best bet. However, lenses that have been service ofteh have the part with the date code on it replaced, so it might no longer be there.
