• UPDATE

The forum will be moving to a new domain in the near future (canonrumorsforum.com). I have turned off "read-only", but I will only leave the two forum nodes you see active for the time being.

I don't know at this time how quickly the change will happen, but that will move at a good pace I am sure.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

candyman, shots like these are exactly why I'm keeping my order open, and why I ordered in the first place. Thanks for posting. I think 50mm on a FF will be just perfect for photographing our first child, soon to arrive. (Before the lens???)

Just got a notice from B&H this morning, two weeks after placing order: Still out of stock...

I called Sigma's US headquarters last week and they said the next shipment for our region (US) is expected this week. I'm going to assume sometime around Wednesday a fair amount of preorders will ship.

**Service update**

I just now received an update for my 50 Art at the repair shop.

They have ordered the mother board of the lens to replace. I can guarantee, as an old consumer electronics rep guy, they have NO idea what's wrong, and decided to switch out all the electronics and cross their fingers. It's also cheaper to replace the whole board, than to find a single component that might act up, very tricky to find.

So a brand new lens, and they have no idea whats wrong, so they try something. I'm not all that confident, because I still can't believe yet again I got a faulty brand new lens, no way....

If I was you I'd be demanding a brand new lens from a different batch. I've seen many people have no issues with it yet so I think it's more of a quality control issue than anything, and sorry but you most likely lost the lottery lol.

I got - some time ago - a new Tamron 24-70. It caused a battery drain problem in my Camera. I had sent it in and they replaced the circuitboard. It works like Sunshine. Fixed the problem. That, by itself, is good.
Less good in your case is they weren't able to find the problem. However such things happens often with PC's as well. Eventually they need to sort it out since it may become an expensive solution if more people will have this problem. Maybe there is a different - cheaper - solution.
Anyhow, glad they are doing something for you. I am curious if it fixed the problem. Keep us updated. Thanks!

Absolutely, I'm very happy they replace some major parts rather than just say they couldn't find the fault. And the part was 2-3 weeks away so they are made much later than the one already in the lens, so that might count for something. My fingers are crossed at least. Just a shame I have to wait so long..

I returned mine yesterday. Sigma called me today and said they would just replace it with a new lens. It took them 10 minutes of testing to determine that it was totally sick.

So, fingers crossed, the next one will be better.

Did they give you an eta on how long till you get it?
They're shipping it out today, so I should have it in a day or two.

That's good, I hope this copy will be better and can't wait to hear how it goes!

I think these two reports are (relatively) good signs - on Eldar's copy Sigma is able to immediately reproduce the errors and "declare it sick".

In both cases, I seriously doubt that the service shop have the debugging tools to determine why the lenses are exhibiting these errors. For that, they most likely will have to ship them back to the factory or R&D. I seriously hope that they will ship them back (to R&D) for analysis, instead of just scrapping them locally.

Interested to know Eldar, where did you hand yours in? And wonder why they simply replaced it and ordered parts for mine, I mean they where the same "age" and mine showed a 10 meter miss and yours less then 40 cm misses. They should've replaced mine as well.. Strange they don't have a consistent policy, but then again, their
Lenses aren't exactly consistent either.. So while you wait three days I wait three weeks.

No, I'm not at all bitter and annoyed ::) ;D

I actually just communicated with my retailer (Japan Photo), so the decision to just send a new may have been theirs (I have bought a few items from them over the years ...). I got the impression that it had been returned to Sigma for testing though.

Thanks! Yeah, I used to work there, we had nice customer service :D only reason I bought it at FotoVideo was because Japan didn't have it in stock. Funny thing is that FotoVideo imports Sigma themselves. Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait ...

Hi everyone! I've been through this thread, and delighted to see people are getting delivery - I'm curious if my situation is similar to others.

I preordered the canon mount from B&H on April 11th at 9am pacific time - still no shipping date. Is this consistent with other people's experience through BH?

On a side note, I paid with PayPal BML, so they charged me at the time of preorder, and I'm hoping there isn't a glitch that screwed up my "place in line" for the preorder shipping.

Thanks for any insights!

Edit May 22 - It shipped this afternoon!

I returned my "sick" lens on Tuesday and received the replacement yesterday. All the shops over here have plenty in stock, so it is a bit surprising, hearing how late deliveries are in the US.

I will run it through FoCal today. Fingers crossed for a healthy copy this time.

Hopefully it is what everyone says, "mine is working, mine, mine, mine" feels like I'm that scene from "Finding Nemo"!

And that your new copy is working Eldar, and that the new motherboard in my copy will do the trick. If it doesn't I'll get my money back and start yet another 35 L II savings account, lol.
