I just now received an update for my 50 Art at the repair shop.
They have ordered the mother board of the lens to replace. I can guarantee, as an old consumer electronics rep guy, they have NO idea what's wrong, and decided to switch out all the electronics and cross their fingers. It's also cheaper to replace the whole board, than to find a single component that might act up, very tricky to find.
So a brand new lens, and they have no idea whats wrong, so they try something. I'm not all that confident, because I still can't believe yet again I got a faulty brand new lens, no way....
Eldar said:Just to follow up, this is the result from FoCal. It is 63 shots in this chart. I stopped it there, because it was (of pretty obvious reasons) not able to determine an AFMA factor.
Eldar said:I returned my "sick" lens on Tuesday and received the replacement yesterday. All the shops over here have plenty in stock, so it is a bit surprising, hearing how late deliveries are in the US.
I will run it through FoCal today. Fingers crossed for a healthy copy this time.

That's good to hear Viggo. I'll pray for the camera gods that you'll have a good copy

But then noticed that the AF was not consistently working when going from infinity to closer distances. Doesn't even hunt, just does nothing and doesn't move past infinity on the distance scale without a manual nudge past infinity that then allows the AF to lock on the subject. Also doesn't appear to be consistent - sometimes it was working, other times it wasn't.
Anyone have any ideas to help with this? I feel that I might be doing something wrong or have adjusted a setting in error (even though I've never had this happen on any other lenses and I tested 2 others without issues). Don't want to send in if I don't have to as I just got it a few days ago!

So, the old 50 Art is scrapped and the new one is in the mail. I'll have it in my hands on Thursday I guess, thank you useless post office. I will not make a quick "yes it works!!" Update without making sure it works over time. But I will post an update on how it performs compared to the other one, but with a pinch of salt that I might suddenly change.
Sigma gets their very last chance now.
Viggo said:Check the other 50 Art threads and you'll see this happens to others as well. You can buy the docking and adjust different afma values for different distances first. But since people say they have copies with zero issues and non of us with faulty ones can get them to work no matter what, send it back while you can.

Thanks Viggo. I read through the other threads and think my issue is a bit different from yours and Eldars (and others). Mine is that the autofocus does not move at all out of infinity after focusing on a far away object then trying to focus on a closer object. The autofocus works great if not focusing to infinity and does not show any front or back focus. But once it hits infinity, it will not move out without a manual nudge on the focus ring. That issue also prevents me from being able to use Focal on it as the software can't focus on the target after defocusing to infinity - I've tried several times and the fully automatic test fails almost immediately. Do you think that's still something that the Sigma dock would be able to assist with? I've contacted both Sigma and the seller (Camera Land) for support, but would obviously much prefer if there's a quick and easy fix!
