Think there is still life in the micro DSLR? I'm hoping there is, I'd love an upgrade to my wife's SL1. Love the size of it, but after picking up a 7d ii the AF and shutter speed seems simply archaic! Not a bad camera, but would love to see the next iteration. It was supposed to come out in September according to that May rumor on NL, but haven't seen anything more about it sense. What do you think, has canon killed it or will we see one this or next year?

The low end cameras seldom get any major new features, but Canon said new DSLR sensors would have on chip A_D converters, so be happy to wait until that can happen. It will happen first in a high end body.

I'm not personally in the market for an updated SL1, but I know people who are, and I have to say I have been expecting there will be one. My guess (FWIW!) is there still will be ... unless Canon happens to decide that segment of the market should go mirrorless, which personally I don't think is likely in the immediate future. I guess we just have to wait and see.

IMHO get the SL1/100D now for a great price if you can live with the features and upgrade as soon as a potentional successor comes down with the price. That'll take a least 4 to 6 month after sales release.
And I don't see anything like that before the big FF game started (1 DX II).
Take pictures now and not maybe tomorrow with future gear

The May SL2 rumour also quite excited me. Since adopting the EOS M system, I find it very difficult picking up my old 40D because of the size and weight. I lusted after 5D models for many years, but never got around to buying one. The 5D III has now almost come to the end of its life and there are some great deals around, however, this is a big and bulky camera and I'm fed up carrying around a backpack with bodies and EF lenses that gives me backache. Also, with two young kids to tote around these days there isn't much carrying capacity left for camera equipment.
At the same time, the EOS M AF is frustrating at times and I have missed shots. I think that a very small, very fast DSLR and some pancake lenses might be perfect for me. That, or the EOS M4 if it ever comes. Recent rumours would seem to suggest that there is still some life left in the EOS M/EF-M series yet.

Just received a refurbished SL1 kit from Canon -- only $299
Fits my wife's hands perfectly and the kit lens is remarkable for the price.
If she wants/needs to use my glass, they all work as designed. The 70~200 2.8 dwarfs the SL1!
SL2 ? Don't need it! My wife has a great eye, composes wonderfully, is NOT a gear head. SL1 is perfect.
BTW: the unit had a "activations" count (shutter count) of 9955 upon arrival. I rarely hit 10,000 activations in a year or two... so how could this count be that high?.. or do they set it under 0000 to allow for testing?

I recently purchased an SL1 and it sure is small. I'd like to see better AF and slightly faster frame rate, but otherwise it's a great little camera. I'm still training my thumb to do back-button AF on the teeny little buttons, though!

I just purchased an SL1 for myself, and I really can't get enough of this camera. I'm taking it travelling and it's been the best companion, kit lens plus a 24mm STM pancake. I can give it to my friends and they can learn to shoot the thing in less than a minute and enjoy taking photos. To me, it's only got the center point AF, but it's aim, recompose, fire!
I really hope Canon gets the new 24 MP into an SL2. It's the most exciting camera Canon makes under $1000 imo, and it's completely invigorated myself in photography. I carry it everywhere.

I think a Rebel SL2 will arrive soon. SL1 sales in North America are much bigger than EOS-M. They are different slices of the market.MintChocs said:

Already bought the SL1 for my wife a few months back, doesn't mean I don't want to upgrade because of the gearhead in me
