Three new segments of EOS R cameras coming in 2025

Could the sensor could move as fast as the shutter?
Just like a mirror moves before taking a shot in a SLR? Just, you need the space for the sensor getting out of the way.... using the sensor as the shutter would be complex, because of the weight, the size, and the need of electrical contacts to transfer data. A rangefinder-like camera not being able to get the image from the lens would seriusly limit the usable lenses.

[...] don’t call yourself a photographer… if you need more than 8 fps to shoot action, just do another job,[...]
I was wondering when the first gatekeeper would appear to enlighten us all what REAL PHOTOGRAPHERS are and need, glad to see it only took 3 pages.

With that down, we are missing someone from the THE BIGGEST AGENCY with hundreds of shooters per event to tell us that the R1mk3 and R5mk4 prototypes they are testing suck and Canon is dooooooomed and everyone will switch to Pentax.

Oh, and Harry needs to tell us about his quantum entanglement apparatus that will un-doom the camera market.

I would be happy to see a fixed lens retro style camera, such as the Canonet. A retro MILC would suffer imho from the same problem already seen with the Nikon Zf: the modern styled lenses on a retro body look a bit off and destroy the illusion.

I think they need to create a large MP professional level camera. Perhaps the rumored R1X with higher MP than the R5M2. I see that some believe it would not sell very well but my opinion is that it would be very popular and would sell very well.

the lineup makes no sense to me…
Can we just get a proper pro dslr with real benefit ? I don’t care about 100mpx because in a 24x36 pixels are going to be ridiculously slow and small, and I already have a 56x43mm 80mpx digital back on my Hasselblad who do that just right .

What would be useful is a simple lens lineup with central leaf shutters up to 1/2000s like a 15 fisheye, a 24mm, a 50mm , a 100mm, a 200mm, or a R1 body with a R5 MKII sensor that have a flash sync up to 1/2000s.

Not all professional shoot soccer, and girafes… I don’t care about ISO 1040000, and ultra fast sequence… at a certains point if you need 24mpx at 60fps with motion blur, just buy a 8k video camera and don’t call yourself a photographer… if you need more than 8 fps to shoot action, just do another job, because I’ve been shooting action sport with flash for 25 years and never needed 20fps, but I need the highest sync speed with the flash … even 1/500s makes a HUGE difference, let alone 1/1000 or 1/2000s.

Or let’s be crazy : if you want to go all the way up Canon, just sell us a 4,5x6 medium format with your autofocus.

If Fuji can do it why can’t you?
This is FUNNY: if you need more than 8 fps to shoot action, just do another job,

Canon is behind Sony when it comes to attracting the young generation. They are catching up a bit, but for that crucial first purchase they could do better. As we know, Sony competes on a wide selection of price points & features but also lens selection including the often cheaper 3rd party market. Canon generally has a lower price camera body, but less camera and lens selection and higher priced RF lenses. They are slowly filling in the middle with lenses like the 28-70 f2.8 STM but it is still a bit pricey to get buy in from photographers/videographers starting out. For example its possible to buy a Tamron 28-70 f2.8 G1 factory refurbished for only $525 on Amazon right now. This Canon lens is $1,100 and will likely only drop to around $900 used in another year or two. The RF 24-105 f4 (L) is also close to $1,000 used. The STM primes are affordable options but after 2-3 of these are combined then the 24-105 or 28-70 becomes the compelling option. Canon should have kept the RP refurbished price at $600 (it was briefly on sale a year ago). Now, refurbished for $800 there is no reason to get that camera when the R8 is $1,200 brand new. Ideally they would have had the RP new for $600 and the R8 for $1,000 then young professionals would have had a nice runway to get started in the Canon ecosystem.

And I'm waiting for another "real" photographer telling us that he only needed a fully manual camera (no drive, no AF, no metering) to shoot world class sports pictures.
That only mediocre amateurs need all this modern garbage...

I rather think Canon should start using the Internet in a more agressive yet not Sonylike way.
Addressing young future customers more actively.
But not by paying self-declared experts, influencers or trolls to generate cripple-hammer theories or doom stupidities against competition.
This is what I find despicable about Sony. Nikon, Fujifilm and Panasonic don't act like this!

I am one of those. The R1 and R5 II do not interest me because I already have a R5 and I am not willing to accept less resolution than that.
I much prefer my 80mp digital back but it is only viable for some of my use cases.
So if there will be a high res R5 with the latest AF goodies, I will be sorely tempted (= my wallet will suffer :ROFLMAO: )

If you do not wsh for more than 50mp, rejoice! you have plenty of options in the RF lineup ;)
curious, why don't you just move to the GFX line? what do you need more then 45mp for?

Your wallet will even suffer more the day the RF 35mm f/1,2 comes... ;)
If it ever comes... :devilish:

Could the sensor could move as fast as the shutter? If not, a rangefinder style design is another possibility.
Wouldn't work either way, with mirrorless lenses having so little distance between their back element and the sensor plane, there would not be any room left for anything other than a shutter, and a rangefinder style camera would have no way of focusing without a sensor that is on the actual focal plane.

I have considered it. But I have a full system with a Hasselblad camera with a 54x44mm 80mp sensor and full set of lenses. I am a sucker for large sensors and the GFX line only uses 44x33mm sensors.

I use MF to shoot fashion editorials. You can see some of my work here:
My Portfolio

I also shoot a lot of panos with the R5.

Hopefully IBIS will continue to be improved, because 100 MP will be a pain (comparatively) to shoot handheld, particularly if noise performance is roughly 2x worse than a 45 MP sensor. And would be thrilled if there were 0.5x and 0.25x raw modes when I don't need 100 MP and don't want to carry a 2nd body.
I would think anyone developing a 100 mp camera would take you concerns into consideration. That said, I've see Fuji and Hasselblad medium format users shoot handheld without any issue, so it can be done.
