Ultra Wide for a crop body - Tokina 11-16 II or Canon 10-22

I have used both on a 60D. The answer depends entirely on your kit. If you need that 17 and up, the 10-22 is a nice option. If you have the 17-55 or a decent 18-xx, it isn't necessary and the added flexibility from f2.8 would be a better choice.

If I were to buy, it would be the tokina.

The Canon has a more useful focal length range, which saves a lot of lens changes and makes it more versatile. 22mm is a natural focal length for a couple people or for environmental portraiture. For indoor group photos, you'll probably be stopping down and using a bounce flash anyway. For landscapes, your not using wide open either. Another thing to consider is that the Tokina has a low max magnification (0.09x vs. 0.17x for Canon), so if you want to blur out the background for a close subject (i.e. flower), the Canon can do it better.

I always have heard good things about the Tokina. People love the Canon too, but if I were to decide between the two... I'd lean towards the Tokina. I should qualify my opinion to say that I have no experience with either lens, I don't like wide angle photography, and I historically prefer Canon gear because it doesn't depreciate very quickly.

So all of my normal 3 suggestions are antithetical to my suggestion... So yeah...

I had the Canon and I experimented with the Tokina before buying it.
I think the Canon is a better choice due to excellent IQ, wider FL, surprisingly little distortion for an ultrawide, full time manual override, and now you can get it for great prices (although that totally throws the resale value argument out the window, it has probably gone as low as it can go).
Unless you think f/2.8 is worth trading ALL the above for, the answer is clear to me (ok, except the IQ- they are more or less at par).

I hate the same debate in december and went with the 10-22. The focal range is just so much more practical. And if you're shooting at the widest, 10mm, f/3.5 is not that much slower than f/2.8.

I also really dislike Tokina's AF/MF push/pull "switch"

Finally I felt like the 10-22 and canon's USM auto focused better.
