What is your favorite new feature of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III

The autofocus will need to be spectacularly good to compensate for keeping the MPs the same. ISO performance will also need to be great. I’m only viewing it as a photographer. Maybe the video market is bigger than I think. Personally I can’t normally detect the video quality difference between HD and 4K not to mind 6 or 8K.
What sort of video would someone produce with a 1DX III? I would have thought more specialised tools would be more useful .
Perhaps it’s a sign innovation in terms of major improvements is at an end.
It will be hard to sell new cameras if they are only slightly better than the existing (and quite robust) ones.

1DX II was popular with a number of wedding etc shooters for doing video becuase at the time it was the only Canon camera that could shoot high frame video. It was never intended as a video specific camera but just happened to have the right set of features at the right time. That isn't the case with the MkIII. For the same money as they will be asking for the 1DX III I can buy a C200b, an Ursa mini pro G2 that will shoot 300fps RAW and has built in ND filters. Or for half the price you can get a PCC 6K. Or you can save some weight and space with the EOS R it will also work on a gimbal or slider much better than the 1DX. 1 DX III will have a place and certain pros will step up for one. But I don't expect video to be a real talking point for the MKIII the way it was for the MKII. I certainly don't see any thing in this camera that would make some one that was looking at Sony stop and rethink their decision.

In consumer land DVDs/streamingg etc the big UHD upgrade wasn't 2k to 4K. It was the addition of HDR and 10/10+/12bit color. On a big enough screen you can definity tell the difference between 2k and 4k but your entire signal chain has to support it and that is why a lot of people end up disappointed with 4K.

From the production side recording in a higher resolution and down sampling almost always results in a better picture than shooting native, if for no other reason than it reduces noise. The fact that you can shoot in a higher resolution and then give some up when you straighten your horizon or lose some when you use a stabalizer in post or have the ability to zoom and psudo-slide in post is also really useful.

Though I'm probably never going to own a 1D-level camera, I'm excited to see how the new sensor performs. If there are meaningful improvements in high ISO image quality or (to a lesser extent) dynamic range, then I'd expect the next iteration of the R (which is something I might eventually own) to have similar technology. Either way, it's gonna be fun to see what Canon rolls out...

Don't expect anything 'meaningful' in that department. I don't think there is much more improvement to be made there.

Thanks for the insight. It was well written.

Yeah, dynamic range and high ISO performance of this camera will clearly show what Canon is capable of.
Umm. Not sure if you got my post or i am not understanding yours. What i meant was that there is simply little room for improvement in sensor performance now. From what i can gather we have pretty mich hit the limit of sensors with the current technology. Sony. Canon. Nikon. Fuji. All will be so close it wont(and tbh already doesn't) make a difference.

I agree that the technology has matured to the point where huge leaps in high ISO image quality are unlikely. Given that context, I consider one stop of improvement to be meaningful. The rumored specs of the 1DXIII show the native range expanding by a stop, so I'm interested to see if that materializes in real-world use. If it does, then I'm even more excited for future versions of the R family someday enjoying a similar improvement.

I would be utterly flabbergasted if they can improve by a whole stop. I just don't think there is a stop left but I guess it depends heavily on processing power etc so maybe they can. It would certainly be mind-blowing if they do and I wouldn't complain as that technology will trickle down to the cameras I can buy

Yep I understand you meant there was little room for improvement, but your post brought me to the idea that this camera will show the current limits of Canon's tech.
Canon is lagging behind in low light and dynamic range at the moment. If there's no improvement, what's the point in releasing new cameras? Right now the 1DXIII's specs seem to be only shining in autofocus and fps (in terms of the stills photography). It's a flagship with all the best tech from Canon. It probably sets the bar for what Canon has in the sensor tech department, so I'm curious to see the reviews on low light and DR.

I think Canon can potentially improve the DR by one stop or so, at least in terms of the physical limits.

But in practice I bet 1DXIII will likely have the same DR and low light performance as 1DXII.

Maybe. But then again the new apsc sensor suggests canon has caught up in sensor tech. Hopefully that will translate to the FF models

If it's slightly behind Sony, and 90D still is, I'm fine with it. That difference wouldn't be that bad on a prospective 75-80Mp model and certainly not enough to make me switch to Sony. I hope it won't have banding though.

I won't buy a 1D camera, so what excites me is HEIF - HEIF is the missing link that makes the EOS Rs work, as i can get 10bit downsampled to 30-50MP for when I don't need 75MP.

Sensor generations are usually no more than 1/10th stop improved (quote Tony Northrup), Sony vs. Canon vs. Nikon are <1/10th stop DR apart. However when you look further, i.e. to ARRI Alexa, you can see room to improve - much better colors in low-light; highlight and shadow recovery with their philosophy of having pixels that cover a larger area... also, if Canon could learn/steal something from the latest computational photography, I mean 1/3.4" Sony sensors in the iPhone 11ProMax and yet only a couple of stops behind... there are ways to improve DR!

I love my 1DX 2 and am happy with frame rate and focussing when light is good. I'm not happy with its focussing capability on small moving objects like BIF in pre sunrise or low light. It sucks with poor contrast. This being said, my only real gripe is not enough pixels in the MK2 and no change in the MK3. I'm not unreasonable but +24m-28px would have been enough to make me upgrade for my photography needs. I somewhat underwhelmed with the MK3 and think I will hold off on the 1DXMK3. Give me same frame rate as MK2 and more pixels and you have buyer.

My favorite thing,
Canon has done nothing that makes me want to upgrade from my 1D X & 1D X II.
The low res turns me off, and I could care less about video features. If I want a cinema camera Canon has a good lineup of them.
Hurts that Canon pays more attention to low budget video creators and forgets about the Pro stills photographers.
We have not had a real Pro level stills flagship from Canon in YEARS!!
