The future of the SX line?

Canon has patented a 100x zoom lens for compact cameras. It has a focal range of 3.6mm to 340mm. With the crop factor of 5.2 for a 1/2.3″ sensor, that’s about an 18mm-1768mm lens!

I’ve always thought 50x zoom wasnt enough in my bag, this is going to solve those issues! I expect to see a new SX series camera or two announced for CES 2014 in Las Vegas next month.

I hope it has IS!!!!!

I read somewhere that the next version of the superzoom will have a 60X lens... 100X would be quite the jump.

It'll sell well against the less knowledgeable amateur buyers who will look purely at the spec sheet!

Yes, the higher the figures ( zoom, megapixels, ... ), the better the camera must be ::)

I have a canon compact that has a 16 megapixel sensor; the actual resolution counting for the resolving power of the lens and noise + jpeg compression cannot be higher than about 8 megapixels imho. So what are those extra pixels doing there besides create noise (and sales)....

Don't get me wrong, I like it when they push development but there comes a point where it has lost most of the practicality.

I also live wondering what to serve a 16 megapixel small sensor with a dark lens. I would buy such a camera SX50 for walks, but I wish it had a maximum of 8 megapixel. After all, the 50X zoom lens can not resolve more detail than 8 megapixel.

The SX50 has a very good reputation, what I want is the ability to use it with my large hands. A 3" touch screen, wifi, etc.

I guess that since the competition has come out with a 60X lens, they need to recover bragging rights.
There must also be a greatly improved IS. The SX50 had the hybrid IS and is good, maybe they can do better.

1768mm @ f/9 will require a tripod and the best light conditions, so what's the point?
At 50X, the SX50 works surprisingly well. With digital zoom enabled it goes up to 200X and is still very hand-holdable. I have no doubt that Canon could get 100X to work....
