why didn't canon offer a 5Dmk3 version with no AA filter?

since it would seem the D800E is benefiting quite a bit from a lack of AA filter
And the thing was announced before the 5dmk3 surely it wouldn't have been hard to
make a canon version where they just didnt install the thing, I think it would be alot more of a hit with still
shooters and video people can still get the normal one.

Anyone know how the DIY AA removals have gone?

Maybe because they felt it was not worth it? I mean, the D800E may seem popular now but moire can be an annoying issue. Sure, people love sharper details and such, but there always is a tradeoff.

Depending on the D800E popularity, Canon may react in the future. I would say there is a good chance of that as well. The D800E seems to be doing well, but it is too early to say the long-term popularity of it.

22MP is way too low density for that, even the D800 36MP is arguably not high enough density to avoid too many aliasing and moire issues.

The D800 is also much more clearly targetted at the landscape market, for many such users aliasing and moire are not going to be big issues.
